Bully Bites Back with Steve Bull

Wolves legend Steve Bull gives it to you straight in his weekly column and believes that two more big results are what it will take to secure Premier League safety.

What a great week to be a Wolves fan. After beating Burnley, the draw at Villa Park was followed by a sensational win at West Ham.

Manager Mick McCarthy warned against complacency after the Villa game and the players demonstrated there is no room for it in the camp with that display at Upton Park.

If I am honest, I wasn’t sure how they would react to getting four points from the three games ahead of schedule. I would have been happy with a draw but the manager has got them in that frame of mind where they believe they can beat anybody.

Nobody was giving us credit before these results. People added that Chelsea and Manchester United had been poor against us when really it was down to us making life difficult for them. Now we have taken seven points from nine and everyone has had to take notice.

Why were West Ham below par? Because we made them play below par. Wolves set their stall out, grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and got the job done.

You can always point to crucial moments along the way, like Scott Parker hitting the post – for which goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann deserves huge credit for the follow-up save – but you could easily say they were fortunate when Kevin Foley hit the bar.

If you don’t put your chances away, you’ll be punished, just as we have been at times this season, but we’ve started to capitalise on those openings now and it’s made all the difference.

Were it not for John Carew’s late equaliser on Saturday, it could have been nine points out of nine but we mustn’t be greedy. It was satisfying enough getting a point there, even with the way things panned out, because I’d seen some Villa fans in the morning that told me we’d get nothing from the game.

I was confident we’d at least get that point because we would been playing so well without scoring many goals, and in the end we were unlucky to get just that.

But if there were mixed feelings about the Villa draw, there was nothing but elation on Tuesday night as we moved seven points clear of the relegation zone. Thinking back to the start of February, a lot of people thought we were going down so it’s great to have that breathing space now.

The manager may be reluctant to put a figure on the points we need to stay up, but I think Wolves are two more wins away from wrapping up Premier League football for next season. The other teams, namely Hull and Burnley, would then have to win at least five games – and they’re not going to do that.

I can see how it might become a psychological issue if you set a target, but the players know exactly what they’ve got to do in the remaining games to stay in the Premier League.

Whether it’s one win, two wins or three they need I know they’ll keep fighting. The way Mick has got them feeling, they’re in fifth gear and will keep going until the end.

As I say, I think it’s a case of two more wins to make us comfortable – and then we can start celebrating. Until then I’d be warning the fans against complacency as much as the players.

We are not safe yet so we can’t start cheering from the rafters, until we’ve got at least another four points on the board. It’s going to be a tough couple of weeks with Everton and Arsenal, so we will be glad of that seven-point gap.

With those games in mind, looking up the table – as opposed to over our shoulders – would be a mistake at this stage. It’s still too early to leave the relegation battle behind, so let’s save the big talk for when we’re safe. Only then can we start thinking about future plans, starting with strengthening the team in the summer.

Hopefully by the end of the season, we’ll all be wondering what all the fuss was about.

In the meantime, the players we have deserve all the credit because from back to front they’ve been top drawer of late. Everyone from the goalkeeper to his defenders, the midfield and the strikers have to play their part in these performances.

Keeping the same team for eight straight games has also played a big part and was something I was keen to highlight even when the results looked a little less rosy.

It’s a squad game but if you play with the same eleven every week then you can get in tune with the other first team regulars. You can instinctively anticipate where the ball is going next and you get into a rhythm that’s created by that consistency.

Individually we’ve seen some great performances from the likes of Kevin Foley and Matt Jarvis of late, as well as the man I can’t help but mention every week, Kevin Doyle.

Foley has been in and out of the side but he’s rolled his sleeves up and got on with things. Mick picked him out for praise after the West Ham game and it’s just a shame he hit the crossbar because he deserved a goal on the night.

Jarvis continues to play well and has even been touted for England, while the likes of Jody Craddock are absolutely flying.

I’d definitely be looking at offering him a new deal just for the experience he can pass on to the young players alone, but he’s also been proving that, at the age of 34, he’s one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

Jody is an old stalwart and I’m now convinced he will guide Wolves to Premier League football next season, with one or two goals along the way too, so let’s get behind the lads for the final push!

BULLY’S TIP OF THE DAY: -

Wolves are not the only ones who have been on fire of late – I’ve been red hot in the Wolves Accumulator.

I won over 200 Wolves Dollars this week alone, but there were still those who beat me to win a free £5 bet with Sportingbet, and they also edged closer to the next once-in-a-lifetime prize.

Let everyone believe that we are still a struggling relegation team & that all our opponents simply have ‘mysterious off days’ when they play us.

I’m happy for them to find out the hard way we have a good in form side with a midfield that will grind them into the ground.

Hull & Burnley won’t even get the points we’ve already got. Job done.

    …bring on the Albion!

Now that McCarthy has stopped random team and formation selection I have stopped criticising and am just getting on supporting the team.

I suspect that most of us who have been so critical much of the season will feel the same.

Norway Wolf. You hand some of the others have shut there trap bcause Mick has shut it for you.

I remember the first one. Mick will get us relegated to div 1.

We got to the play offs.

Second season we finished 1 goal away from the play offs. But fans were crying for his head.

He will be sacked by xmas.

    We won promotion as champions.

He can not manage in the premier league.

We now have the most succesful manager for 30 years.

When will the Mick bashers learn. He is a top drawer manager and we need to do our dammedest to keep him here.

Norway Wolf I agree with your comment.
The West Ham game was the first game since Christmas 2008 year that we showed a positive style of play that was pleasing to the eye.

    Golden Blood.
don’t worry about doing your dammedest (what ever that means?) there won’t be ANY premier league teams queuing to sign McCarthy.

Golden Blood – couldn’t agree more. He’s done a fantastic job and his record speaks for itself.
No manager’s perfect. Many lose the plot after a bad run of results and try to please the media and the fans instead of sticking to their beliefs. Mick’s a strong character and sticks to his guns which is one his of great qualities. But I suspect that’s also what annoys some fans and media.

He’s also right about points targets – probably because he’s a golfer. You have a game plan to achieve the best result and execute it. Start thinking at 1:1 after 60 minutes that we only need a point and the probability is you’ll lose.
