Team getting there for McCarthy
Wednesday 24th March 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
Grounded boss Mick McCarthy has admitted Wolves have “gone a long way” towards guaranteeing Premier League survival with the superb win at West Ham.
Wolves’ performance in their 3-1 success at Upton Park will live long in the memory, while the result hoisted them seven points clear of the drop zone with seven games left.
Publicly, McCarthy has refused to set any targets, but he acknowledged for the first time that by taking seven points from three successive away games at Burnley, Villa and now West Ham represented a giant leap in their quest for survival.
“It was a brilliant result. It is significant, of course it is,” said the boss.
“We’re not there yet and we haven’t sewn anything up yet, but it’s getting closer and it’s gone a long way to helping out.”
McCarthy insisted however his players cannot afford to let up in their efforts with Everton the visitors to Molineux on Saturday.
“If anybody else can put a run together, like ours, good luck to them,” he said.
“But we can’t take the foot off the gas. We’ve got Everton at home on Saturday and need more points from that.”
McCarthy added: “These are points that will keep us in the league and we’ve just had seven from three tough away games.
“It could be a pivotal result but we could say the same about Villa and Burnley.
“If we survive, then the three points or the one point we get to survive will be the sweetest.
“Have I got a points target? Yes – get more than at least three others.
“This is the best performance because it’s the most recent.
“I’d like to emulate it or better it against Everton on Saturday.”
While last night’s victory was Wolves first at Upton Park for 32 years and only their fourth in 28 attempts, McCarthy has happy recent memories of the Boleyn Ground.
“I did mention to the lads that I’d won the Championship at West Ham with Sunderland (in 2005) and I’d like to repeat that feeling!” he said.
“It was nice to get a similar feeling there again.”

That WAS a positive performance and as good as any since MM has been here.
Nice to play with 2 wingers who supported Doyle and with 2 full backs who overlapped.
It has been a long time coming.
My one tinge of disappointment was Berra, he really struggled early on, causing us more problems than West Ham did.
Keep the POSITIVE mode flowing and we won’t have any problems.

Well Done Mick!! You fully deserve all the praise you should get now, shut some of the numpties up.

Also forgot to say that the confidence in our away performances now are unbelievable, and when I say we should go to the Emirates with no fear – (remembering that its sandwiched between two matches with Barcelona)I mean that without rose tinted glasses, at least a point possible.
But Everton first and that I feel will be harder, being at home and the form they are in.

Great atmosphere last night at the Boleyn Ground- disappointed not to have been given the early penalty on Jones, but what can I say we always get **** refs!
West Ham were very poor and by the third goal I would be surprised if 5000 of their supporters left the ground throwing objects on the poitch as they went. Thanks for leaving early, it meant that I got through Upton Park tube station faster than at any previous time.
One final word- the stewards, Was there really any need to try and stop Hahnemann and Zubar from throwing their tops into the wolves fans or were they just trying to provoke an incident? Shame on them.

Well done Mick and the lads – worth the very long journey last night to be there!
It was amazing to see how badly the west ham fans reacted both in terms of hundreds (thousand) leaving with half an hour to go and the very negative chanting – certainly helped us to a good win!
Maybe now some of the negative folks on here will realise we’re buildign something good here without the bankrupcy risk that comes from big spending that can’t be afforded or sustained. Well done the 3Ms!
Bring on Everton!

So – just to check – still playing 4-5-1, still playing Foley on the right, still playing Karl Henry and still winning. Come on muppets, at least have the decency to admit you were wrong and McCarthy is not tactically out of his depth etc

I will be the first to eat some humble pie with the style of play MM adopted 8 games or so ago. Wasn’t keen on one up front or playing people out of postion bur credit where credits due he has got them all motivated and they were all outstanding especially Jones and Doyle.
Fair play Mick and long may it continue because thats more like it. The one thing i will say is i said all along a balanced side week in week out would serve us well.
Up the Wolves well done lads!!!!

Well we shut the Academy-of-Football up last night eh ?
Jones, Mancienne and Henry were immense in midfield and we out footballed Parker & Co, they hardly got a kick if you looked at the stats up until we went 3-0 up and MM started to change things.
Wind up a few Villa fans you know by suggesting Capello ought to be taking Jarvis not Asley Young to South Africa. They don’t like it up ‘em and have held the Midlands spotlight for far too long.
It’s been a great Claret & Blue fortnight, but, the job ain’t done yet and Everton come to town in form.
Let’s enjoy it and give Mick and his team the ovation and atmosphere they deserve.

Were getting better every week with this 4-5-1 formation. Not being too optimistic but i think if we can carry on playing well like we have been of late, we could easily finish in the top half of the table and even uefa cup lol!

I remember a few weeks back listening to the idiot Moose on Talksport going on about how his beloved hammers would lift off the relegation zone as they would gain a few easy home wins from visiting rubbish teams (as he described) from the likes of Bolton and Wolves – eat your words Moose! Fantastic result and a great win last night! Well done Wolves

4 away wins now. Hannaman was the unsung hero though yet again. His on the line grab early on could have saved us from a result the other way. It just shows that experience is far more important for a keeper than just being a good shot stopper. We couldn’t keep going with 3 very young keeper like we have been

Great atmosphere last night at the Boleyn Ground.First time I have ever seen Woloves beat West Ham there.
MM got his tactics spot on, Jones and Doyle were outstanding as was Hahnemann.
I don’t think we should get carried away though, West Ham were really poor and they seemed to think that they only had to turn up to win.
Everton will be much more testing opposition.
West Ham must be hot tips to go into administration what with the recent football tribunal ruling that they are going to have to pay Sheff U an as yet undecided figure over the Carlos Tevez affair. Sheff U want £30-50 million.
That early bird is looking good value, but
I am not counting my chickens yet!
Also, are you watching Stanly Collymore? criticised us no end on the radio following the burnley game ‘ a championship game next season’ I think were the words.

Concentrate on Everton and take nothing for granted. What a great time to play Arsenal, hopefully they’ll have one eye on the champions league and won’t want to risk any injuries. Wouldn’t it be great to be assured survival with 2 or 3 games left. I’d still like to see us with 37-38 points so no one can say we had it easy and would have been relegated in any other season.

Another excellent performance from the Wolves. When Doyle nicked the ball from the full back I really did not expect him to score from such a tight angle and what about that shot from Ron ! The quality strike from Jarvis killed them off. Dave Jones was outstanding again. I think back to early in the season when the muppets on here were asking ‘how come were not were Burnley are?’. Do you really want Portsmouth players in our squad?
I’m sure I read that only 3 or 4 had offered to take pay cuts to help the club… I know we may live in the age of the mercenary footballer, but do you really want to take a potential rat that’s effectively jumped ship?
Maybe I’m being a little harsh, as I’m sure not all of the Portsmouth players are simply there for the paycheck…

This is to all you mcarthy hating numpty’s.
I have never submitted a comment before but have read them regularly for the last 2 years and with most football forums the idiots some how get heard louder than the sane.
i am not a mick Mcarthy idoliser, but I do see a bloke in harmony with Moxey And Morgan leading a Club which was lost again in summer of 2006 (thanks to the arrogant Hoodle) back to where it belongs in the top ten of English football. They are doing it sensibly and cleverly.
I like most people have questioned some of the signings some of the tactics and some of the quality on view. But I have never thought he was the wrong man simply because we are making really good progress.
i have consistently argued with people when they say well he cannot cut it at this level or he cant take us any further. How do these people know. Because having never been here before and properly backed nor does Mick Mcarthy. But I do know that he has been proved right on to many occasions for us to not love him to bits.
One div who goes home and away and admits to hating Mcarthy said we are only going to stay up because there are tree worse teams than us. Well I hope he is squirming this morning.
As for Morgan the bloke seems genuine but i would love to see more of the £30 million shown.
Moxey deserves more credit than he gets, i thinks its the hair that puts people off.
From the january window we dont if Morgan would not back Mcarthy or Moxey could not get the deals he wanted or McCarthy said we did not need that much.
All I know is mick is a true football bloke and knows more than me so let him take us where we want to go, cus i love the Wolves and wont be happy till we are back up amongst the big boys.
Lst night felt like we were getting there

Top Class Performance, if not the best of the season so far, i just wish the ‘Media’ would give us a bit of credit, instead of saying well Burnley played poor ,AV players had an off day, WHU were very poor tonight, What ‘UTTER CRAP’ our team has been playing well for about 10 matches or so without having the ‘LUCK’ top teams seem to get. But the last three games we’ve taken our chances and the luck at times as gone for us, yes they hit the foot of the post and it bounced out? nobody mentioned we hit the ‘POST TWICE at Bolton? I thought all three goals were top draw strikes, Zurbar’s was an excellent strike considering he’s a full back, im biased though as ive always rated him and have said so many times on here, he’s got great pace, whips in some great crosses, and is not afraid to shoot from anywhere over the halfway line. Im not sure i like Mancienne in that holding mifield role, not sure he brings much to the game seems to run around and gets in the way and seems lost as to where he’s supposed to be, but perhaps other people seee more than i do its just my opinion, i see MM still found a place for Ward to come on for 20mins+ why he didnt just move Doyle out wide give him a well earned rest and put big Chris Iwelumo on for 20mins or even give Keogh/Edwards a run out for 20mins,but know he brings on Ward? Anyway dont want to be negative, it was a GREAT performance by the entire squad, Dave Jones again was excellent the weight of his passes for the two goals he were brilliant, he’s overall game of late as also been brilliant if he carries on these performances he’s going to be a late contender for Player of the Year. I just hope we can bottle this preformance and bring it out every match we play for the rest of the season as our next two games are very tough games and its easy to get carried away like MM/KD say we lose two and hull, wigan, whu win two and were back in the struggle another draw/win v Everton will be very good Arsenal just go and give it our best shot, but i think our ‘ form and luck’ have turned at the right time of the season. GOOD LUCK FOR SATURDAY AGAIN LADS UTW.

Sir Lupi. There is no egg on my face this morning and I stand by my principles.Last night was a brilliant performance and a fully deserved victory. But comments have been made over 30 matches and not one.Where MM has got it right in the last 3 matches his overall performance in the premiership hardly sets the world of football alight.Last nights result should mean premiership football next season, but a big overhaul is needed on the playing staff to move up to the next level.
As for your pathetic statement regarding supporting baggies or indeed any other team, then this shows YOUR INFANTILE mind.

Read Philly Wolf (43) I couldn’t have put it better myself.
We stand on the threshold of survival, which is what we all hoped for last August. Just a few more points. I must say I’d rather see West Ham and their nasty little chairman go down than Hull, although I think their goal difference might make that more difficult.
Certainly be an easier six points next season.

A superb performance from a team that now seems to be full of confidence and what a difference it makes. The teams effort was encapsulated once more in the performance of Kevin Doyle a man who will never give up and has become a menace to every premiership defence. The team now seems to have a common cause which starts by being bloody minded against whoever it might be, they now seem a lot harder to beat and this is great for us. There are a lot of smiles around the the team now, the shape of the team is obviously well suited to them. Long may it continue!
maltawolves – “his overall performance in the premiership hardly sets the world of football alight” and what did you expect? did you honestly think we would be promoted and become a top of the table premier league team in 1 season. I can understand you wanting for Wolves to be doing better than they are, but that is highly unrealistic dont you think? All we could have asked for from MM is for survival and it looks like hes going to deliver that.
The majority of happy clappers on here are branded as being blind and not having a clue and told to get real, but as far as i can tell, they are the ones that are supporting this club with all theyre heart, and its the doom and gloomers who are being unrealistic expecting a newly promoted team to be doing better than what we currently are.
I guarentee not a single person on here would be happy if we was in portsmouths position right now, but luckily for us, we have an intelligent board and a fantastic manager and group of players, who all deserve praise if they manage to keep us up.

First of all I’d like to say that last nights performance was great. We looked organised and everyone looked comfortable on the ball and we were the better team from the first minute to the 92nd. A great win which I think could make us safe, along with another couple of points. Second I’d like to ask a question to the people who still slag off MM, which is the minority I know, there can’t be that many narrow sighted people who go to the games each week. My question is what exactly do you expect a manager, who started with a youth team and some free agents to work with, to do in the space of 4 years? When MM first took over I was preparing for 3-4 years of mid table, at best, in the championship with the team he was left with. Instead in the first two years we were challenging for promotion and by the third year we were up. Now we are in the premiership moving up the table, with one of the best performances I’ve seen in a long time, and look almost safe for next year. With one of the youngest team who can only improve and with all that, you think MM should get the sack at the end of the season? You need a reality check we are not Manu, Arsenal or Chelsea. We are a newly promoted club who are looking to build, which is what MM is and has been doing. Luckily I don’t think Mr Morgan is of the same mind set as some of the morons who call for MM to be sacked. Long may it continue. UTW.

To all those knocking the ‘Knockers’
Everything worked out really well last night and to every ones credit the last three games have been really rewarding and quite justly appreciated by the majority.
However, many of the criticisms this season are quite justified and for the majority of those doing the Knocking, I would suggest that they care and hurt just as much as the so called happy clappers. Supporting your team does not mean you have to fully accept everything that’s dished up. Following last nights excellent three goals we now equal Portsmouth as the lowest scorers. Approx Three Hundred and Seventy Five Thousand paying Home customers have witnessed a paltry TEN goals scored by the team so far this season, that just ‘aint good enough and rightly deserves criticism.
Like everyone else, nothing would give me greater pleasure than to see the team I have loved and supported since 1948, stay up and progress, It will not happen if we all walk around wearing Old Gold Blinkers and give approval without protest to some very poor performances previously this season. It’s been a tough learning process, pity the obvious lessons were not acted upon a little sooner.

Do the mathmatics my Med based friend and you’ll see he’s far from that.
It must be oh so tricky commentating from afar as you do so very often. Philly Wolf and Berie last time I looked we lived in a democracy where it was not a crime to voice your own opinion.
I have also criticised MM heavily in the past and I am entitled to that opinion. However, we appear more settled at the moment and understanding between players is clearly the better for that.
I would still like to see us get in a director of football with some understanding of tactics to work along side MM if he is to remain at the end of the season.
MM is no shrinking violet and we need to appoint someone whjo will not just be a yes man, there to make up the numbers.

I’d have understood Mick’s critics if we were to stay up simply because there were 3 worse sides below us, but thats clearly not the case now.
We now have a consistent quality side playing a very effective system giving the elite teams a run for their money, and now comfortably beating those teams around them. Last night was just sublime. It wasn’t a one off, we’ve been building up a performance like that for some time.
I think we’ll now end up towards the top of the bottom half, solidly amongst the established Premier League sides.
Mick never got the investment he asked for, which was repeated in January, but he constantly experimented with the team until he found the style, positions and formation to best suit the players available. Also he had to adjust to SEB & Kightly not making any worthwhile contribution, which was totally unexpected blow to everyone.
I thought 4-5-1 was going to be nothing more than damage limitation with no hope of winning. It may have started that way cause teams immediately stopped putting 4 past us, but Mick has fine tuned it into an attack minded midfield dominant formation.
The 4-5-1 & the 10 changes at Man U against all known logic have turned out to be tactical genius.
We are still vulnerable at times, and good teams will still score against us…but I don’t think any other manager could have got the same squad playing as effectively and whole heartedly as Mick has.
Also Mick’s man management and motivation has been exceptional throughout the season. He deserves credit for assembling his ‘put a shift in’ squad who are playing their hearts out for him.
Next season I don’t think we’ll have a problem getting the right players, and we’ll be one of the few remaining clubs to afford them.

Great performance great result.
As for David Golds comments on talksport this morning ” everything Wolves done came off and we was unlucky when Parker hit the post and then saved on the line ” I guess you have to defend your players. Did the clown forget we had already hit the bar and had (another )clear cut penalty turned down

I hardly see many posts saying sorry to mick? if we lose back to back against EVERTON and ARSENAL i’m sure a few idiots will turn on him again??? we won’t find a better manager out there so lets all back him or we’l end up with BORING . . . MEGSON, COPPELL OR CURBISHLY
does anyone agree JODY CRADDOCK is a better centre back than MATT UPSON??? and that joke of a defender is our next in line after RIO and TERRY.

Well versed Simon in Oklahoma, as an expat here in Aussie I to have spent much money following Wolves in the lates 60′s, 70′s, 80′s & early 90′s before leaving the shores for 1st New Zealnad & then making Aussie home. Have my feelings & desire to see Wolves do well declined, absolutely not.. last nights result against the self appointed “Academy of Football” certainly raised a few eyebrows (Sullivan & Gold).
Ok next season who stays, who goes. Listed for me to go are:
Maihoffer
SEB
Halford
Miljas
Segundo
Mancienne (Can’t always remain a loan player)
Ins
Definitely not Hunt from Hull unless it was for 1mil only. Hull lost their chance in Jan.
What about Doyler. Would like him to stay & build a team around him, but honestly if one of the big 6 from the EPL or a big team from Europe came for him, could we deny him. The price would definitely have to be right & although he only has single digit goals (so far) his all round play is on par with anything Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Utd, Man City & Chelsea have. Wolves (Jez & Morgan) would need to start the bidding with at least 25mil minimum, I think he is worth in todays terms 35 – 40million.
Interesting to see what the budget will be…2nd season consolidation could be harder then 1st season survival…
Well done boys & to all ex-pats have your say we have an undoubted right.

Wozza Tenerife, Malta Wolf. I couldn’t agree with you more, Wordsley Wolf has a real problem with x pats, like Simon in Oklahoma I also spent probably 30 Years supporting the Wolves home and away including Wembley.
The pupose of this blog as I understand it is to put your opinion and respect other supporters opinions, the great majority of people want the team and manager to do well. There are a few people like him and a few others who need to chill, of course that’s one thing us x pats don’t have to do is chill, except for the wine!

IN REPLY TO 32 who’s comment was – Today there is egg on your face, you are the type of fans that have held this club back for the last 25 years because of your knee jerk victimisation and negative, unfounded critisms of past and particulary present honest, hardworking players and managers.
Where do i start!? Firstly if you have read most of my posts i consider myself to be totally fair in what i say and back it with actual facts, and have ALWAYS given the team and manager there praises when it was due!
Can i just say for me it is NOT a knee jerk reaction, i have always thought MM is tactially inept and for you to try and tell me that this man is now some sort of god (mentioning him in the same sentance as bully etc) im sorry but your the idiot fan that this club could do without! FICKLE OR WHAT?
My dislike for this bloke goes alot deeper than me thinking he has no clue tactics wise, the bloke is arrogant, stubborn & shows time and time again a total lack of respect for us fans!
Before the last 3 games the tactics where NOT working as i have given evidence in previous posts! so now after these last 3 games have i changed my opinion on MM?? not at all! is he now a god? NO!! 2 weeks ago at Burnley he made some ridiculous changes that could have cost us the game!! AND NEARLY DID! if you could see from your armchair!! and then there is his signings! 6-7 of which have not figured all season wasting millions in fees so what does this say about his judgement?
I have never questioned how hard the players, or manager work so where you got that from i do not know!!?? so that would make that UNFOUNDED!
So it is us that have held the club back for 25 years eh? sorry sorry and there was me thinking it was, bad managers, numerous BAD signings that we paid over the odds for & false promises from the owners and board! but no your right it is us lot posting on the express and star website with our honest opinions that have held us back all these years! (sniggers)
I will hold my hands up and say i have loved every minute of the last 3 games & it has more than made up for some dire games & performances this year & makes all the money i have spent on home & away season tickets AGAIN worth while but do i now put on my gold and black glasses and pretend everything is perfect and that our manager is the best ever thing to happen to the club since bully? LOL NOT EVEN CLOSE MATE!!

I think poor old Wordsley wolf probably applied for a visa to live abroad but as all expats know you need to have a degree or qualification in order to be accepted. Sadly, upon finding you need a brain, he crawled back to his hole in Wordsley, green with envy to those of us that made the move. As I’ve said before, I’ve still to see him post a comment without being abusive to someone and now look forward to his comments to see who he’s going to have a go at next!! This is off a West Ham weblog.
Wolves were so much better than West Ham you wouldn’t believe they were only a place and a point above the Hammers before the game. They were first to every ball and showed plenty of passion. If they were not our relegation rivals, I’d be wishing them all the best for the rest of the season as their work rate and desire deserved it.
Says it all really.

Now that has to be one for the ages! An unbelievable master-class performance. Every Wolves supporter around the globe heard and felt all three of those spectacular goals. And, the keep away, twenty-three passes before Jones missed or had his shot tipped wide by Green was amazing! We will stay up, even with a few more heart-stopping moments in weeks to cone! Well done to Super Mick and the Team!

Sorry that you disagree with me on tactics. i think a Lb has been needed all season. I also think that Foley should have been played at RB. I don’t think that SEB should have been given so much time to up his level and I think MM has wasted a lot of money on dross. We have seen numeorus players played out of position.
I also think there have been games when 442 would have been more appropriate and MM has been slow to change things around.
I don’t think my views are in isolation, but as a home and away season ticket holder I am entitled to have them as you are to yours.
I will be delighted if we manage to stay up and I am realistic enough to know that we are not safe yet.

oh dear lupi (32) what a burden you carry… noticed EVERY one of your posts has been to moan about those people who were previously moaning? do you get the irony?
hang heads in shame? a bit dramatic dont you think…
It is clear that these pages have become a vessel used predominantly for Wolves fans to slag each other off – a reason why a lot of “football related” posters havent bothered returning… It is however every persons right to air their views, no matter how inflammatory or incorrect they may seem. If you cant handle that, then perhaps internet blogs and message boards arent for you.

Very emotional on Tuesday, from a 40year WW follower.Trust we can achieve “more points than 3others”&then build on that with a few astute signings for next season. Can envisage us being up there for many moons to come.
Dont even mind if baggies join us for a season(not so sure I wrote that!!)

79 – crowfish – The fact that you feel that the manager isnt good enough to take us any further isnt the problem for most fans i believe. You say that your giving your oppinions based on facts, yet the fact is Mick has gotten us promoted when he said he would and it looks like he is going to steer us to safety, which is a fantastic accomplishment. Those are the most important facts to consider, and he has done the job so far spot on.
I personally dont have a problem with people voicing their oppinions on the teams performance and the managers decisions, as it is part of the debate that goes on here and i do love a good debate. What i do have a problem with, and this is not nescesarily aimed at you crowfish, is the fans that call for Mick to be sacked because of one bad result even considering our position outside of the relegation zone. Now that is knee jerk reactions, especially considering that we are a newly promoted club and was never expected to win the majority of our matches and rightly so.
We are Wolves, a newly promoted club looking to stake a claim in being a premier league club for years to come. We arent going to be finnishing mid table or above, no matter who is in charge, and premier league survival, no matter how it is achieved is the overall goal. that is the most important fact you should be considering when you are voicing your oppinion.

Thursday morning and Im still euphoric about tuesday night. What an atsmophere! I thought criticism of Berra a little unjust. I know he had two scuffed clearances early on but he never put a foot wrong after that. As for Dave Jones, he now looks a real class premier league player, also a little word for George who justified Micks decision to bring him back in. Im going to the Arsenal game but look out for me jumping up in the home end when we score!

if we stay up we do need some better players. Money will be tight again as no one wants to be next Portsmouth.
The Korean, Lee Chung Yong at Bolton is looking useful and wouldnt cost the earth. We need more skill and guile in the team to open teams up. He certainly opened us up a few weeks ago when we played Bolton.
Chris Eagles at Burnley would be another one that would suit our payscales.

82 – my problem isn’t with expats per se, it’s with clowns like you.
You don’t contribute in any way whatsoever. You just sit there bashing your keyboard, win or lose and slate the team and Mick.
You never offer anything constructive or positive. You never make sensible suggestions (you haven’t even mentioned football in your last rant come to that and accuse ME of being abusive).
If you actually went to a game (long shot I know given that you’ve got your empire to concentrate on), you’d know that the ‘real’ fans are actually positive about the players, Mick and the realistic chance of staying up.
But what’s the point of taking that into account when you and your idiot mates have competitions to see who come up with the most insults?
Oh and I didn’t know you needed a ‘degree or qualification’ to flip burgers abroad.
You utter tool.
