Wolves can’t relax warns Doyle

Kevin Doyle today admitted Wolves cannot afford to relax in the battle for survival because they are not safe yet.

Wolves produced arguably their finest performance in the Premier League in last night’s 3-1 win at West Ham.

Victory made it seven points from three successive away games at Burnley, Villa and the Hammers to move them seven points clear of the drop zone with seven games left.

Defeat for West Ham was the fifth in a row for Gianfranco Zola’s side, who now go into Saturday’s home clash against Stoke against a backdrop of fans’ unrest following chants against the manager and players last night.

Doyle, whose Upton Park opener was his seventh goal of the season, insists the Wolves dressing room remains grounded and will not allow the players to get too far ahead of themselves with important games coming up against Everton at home and Arsenal away.

“We’ve said that in the dressing room – we want to enjoy the win because it’s a great place to get a result, but we can’t relax too much,” said the Republic of Ireland international, who claimed before last night’s win that Wolves needed another three victories to be safe.

“It’s important to stay focused because we’ve got seven games to go and if we have a bad result in the next two weeks and the other teams win a couple of games, they could make it very difficult for us and then we’d back in the mire.

“We’ve got Everton at home and Arsenal away the following week which will be two very tough games.

“We want to stay on this unbeaten run.”

But the £6.5m club record signing admitted beating the Hammers could be pivotal to their chances of staying up.

“It could be a huge result because it puts a bit of daylight between us and the rest below us,” he said.

“It has taken the pressure off a bit and hopefully we can play better football as a result of that as well.”

Form team Everton – Wolves’ opponents on Saturday who have beaten Chelsea and Manchester United in recent weeks – travel to Manchester City tonight.
