Doyle’s urge for the six-pointers

Striker Kevin Doyle insists Wolves must reproduce their performances against the top teams when they face the strugglers – starting at West Ham.

Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Villa was the second point taken from Martin O’Neill’s Champions League challengers this season, while they won both games against Tottenham and drew at home to Liverpool.

But although Wolves have beaten Bolton at home, done the double over Burnley and taken two points off Hull, they could have fared better against the teams around them.

Club-record signing Doyle believes after taking four points from their last two outings, Wolves can take out their frustrations at the Hammers tonight.

He said: “It’s a big game for us and they’ll be thinking the same. They’ll be fancying a win at their place but we’ve got confidence now and we can see ourselves creeping closer to that 36 or 38 points whatever it’s going to be.

“But we’re not at all safe yet. We’re definitely not far from it but every point helps. We have another chance tonight and another on Saturday, so it’s a big week for us.

“It would nice to remain unbeaten come the end of it. But there’s no point in us performing how we did on Saturday and then going to a team who are in and around us on Tuesday night and not putting a good performance.

“We have to put in the same level of display and get something from the game. We’ve done well against teams like Villa but then, against teams who we should pick up something against, we have struggled a bit the week after.

“We need to make up for that.”

Doyle can offer a good omen for tonight’s game, having been part of the Reading team with goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann that thrashed the Hammers 6-0.

The Wolves striker said: “We beat them 6-0 at the Madejski Stadium. I got a couple of goals so that was a good day.

“It would be nice to repeat tonight, but I think they have come a long way since then.”
