Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Davenport’s possible Albion lifeline
Tuesday 23rd March 2010, 11:00AM GMT.
Former England under-21 international Calum Davenport could join Albion for treatment in the next phase of the bid to rebuild his career.
The 27-year-old has been to the Baggies’ training ground to be assessed by club medical staff, as Hawthorns officials consider helping him with his rehabilitation.
Davenport, who is due in court in the summer to face an assault charge, is hoping to restart his career next season.
The defender is a free agent following his exit from Upton Park but has not trained for six months after suffering stab wounds in an alleged domestic incident, and there is no suggestion at present that Albion are considering taking him on.
There could move in any event until the summer, as the player cannot sign for any new club as his Upton Park contract was cancelled outside the transfer window, meaning the Hammers still hold his registration until the end of the season.
In the meantime medical staff will continue to assess Davenport, before deciding whether the club can offer help with his rehabilitation.
The former Coventry centre-back is represented by the same company that acts for Albion players Scott Carson, James Morrison, Chris Brunt and Giles Barnes.
Davenport spent three years at Coventry from 2001, winning the Sky Blues Player of the Year award in 2004 and sealing a £1.3million move to Tottenham, spending three years at White Hart Lane before moving to West Ham for £3million.
But the player required surgery to both legs last year after an alleged attack, for which his pregnant sister’s boyfriend faces charges.
In January, Davenport pleaded not guilty to assaulting his sister Cara in the same incident and is due to stand trial at Luton Crown Court on August 2, but is out on bail.
In a statement when he left Upton Park, he said: “I would like to thank everyone at West Ham for their incredible support over the last six months, especially the manager and the excellent medical staff who have helped me through my recovery.
“I would like to also thank the fans for all their messages of support. I understand that there is no longer a place for me in the team and wish the team every success for the future.
“I am fully focused on returning to fitness and aim to be back playing football for a new club by the start of next season.”
