Wolves fear foul play in Hoff row
Thursday 18th March 2010, 11:29AM GMT.
Wolves will not take any disciplinary action regarding Stefan Maierhofer’s outburst against boss Mick McCarthy as they believe his comments have been fabricated.
The striker reportedly accused the club of “taking the p*** out of me” over his lack of first team opportunities.
His alleged comments appeared in a national paper yesterday, after Maierhofer made his debut on loan for Bristol City and were plastered all over Sky Sports News through the evening.
Maierhofer reportedly said: “I don’t have a clue why I’ve not been in the team. I work hard in training, yet others get to play. Why have Wolves signed me only to not use me?
“Kevin Doyle cost £6.5milliom, so he has to play. Yet he has just got six goals in 25 games, which is not a great deal. The manager told me I lacked match practice after my operation.
“Then Andy Keogh came back from a three-month lay-off, trained for two days and played against Bolton and Manchester United.
“I feel like they are taking the p*** out of me.”
Wolves have conducted their own enquiries to find the source of the quotes and believe an interview conducted abroad has mis-represented the giant Austrian striker.
The club will continue to look at the incident closely and would discipline the player if the comments were indeed made.
Chief executive Jez Moxey said: “Of course we have spoken to Stefan and his agent, we have seen a basis of an interview he gave abroad and translated that, but can’t find anything that actually corroborates what is being reported.
“We have spoken to all sorts of people and we can’t see where anyone has said this.
“Bristol City’s people have given us information about the comments Stefan made and nothing was said in that regard, so it seems like someone has taken a liberty in the extreme.
“But we will continue to look into it but as far as we are concerned, this sort of thing would be dealt with internally and we will not be making any further comment about it.
“All we are interested in is preparing for is Saturday’s game against Villa.”

What a load of spin, quite obvious he hates the place, along with many others, why sign players and not play them
SACK MM NOW
Report abuse
Didn’t he arrive with a bit of a reputation for being outspoken? The best thing he could do is score some goals for Bristol City,to show us what he is made of.I personally think we will lose a lot of money on him,but I hope I am wrong and he comes good.
I would be surprised if he ever played for Wolves again. Possibly an even greater flop than Tomas Frankowski and Robert Taylor.
Iff in fact it was fabricated,it was pretty close to the truth.I wont have anything said about Kevin Doyle, iff we had another ten like him we wouldnt be scratting, but the comments about Keogh are valid, players like the Hoff,Sam Vokes,Big Chriss and others must be just a bit P–sed of when Sylvan gets on every week, without coming up with the goods, and Micks golden boy gets back in the side after only two days training..At the moment neither Sylvan or Keogh are being picked on merit,so there must be just a tad of favouritism..
Wrong or write, I do agree that maybe he should have played a little more this season.
His previous record suggests that he knows where the back of the net is. It must be demoralising for him to see Ebanks-Blake start 15-16 continous games, and Keogh to get straight back into the first team fold (after only two days training). After all he has scored as many as those two this season (one gaol)!
P.S. 1-2 victory to Wolves on Saturday, Iwelumo to come on and get the winner!
The Hoff is right in what he said though – he hasn’t been given a fair crack and Mick brought his son Keogh straight back into the team. No wonder we are the lowest scorers in the division!!!
whether he said it or not, it dont really matter he will be gone in the summer. he has not had a great chance to shine but he has looked very very poor in the games he has played.
He may or may not have said them, but I bet he certainly feels the comment isn’t far of the mark! Its been said on many occasions on here that Mick has his favourites and heres just another example! Keough out for ages, plays particuarly poor in a 4-0 defeat to Telford (as everyone else did) and straight back into the first team. The mind boggles!
But if Mick keeps us he’ll be a genius!
I hope to god we do avoid the drop and I think we will, but come on Morgan and Moxley put it into context we should not be battling quite as hard as we are now, this league is poor this year, fact! New season, new blood you can’t trust this man to buy quality Premier players thats proven!
No such thing as a rumour!!. It’s the truth or a lie !!!
Wolves will not take any disciplinary action as they know that all the statements (whether said by Stefan or not) are true.
Why Mick bought players like Stefan to the club and never give them a chance is beyond belief.
I think we can stay up but I hope the board are not stupid enough to keep Mick on, he has to go by the end of May, what ever happens to us.
Well i would have said that if it was me and the Andy Keogh bit is bang on. Saying that i haven’t seen anything that would make me think he’s the answer to any of our prayers. I bet a lot of MM’s signings are saying that.
I dont care if you said it hoff!
I STILL LOVE YOU!!!!!!!
In honesty, I think Wolves HAVE taken the p*** out of him.
I saw him at “that” game at Man Utd – he held the ball up incredibly well and brought the midfield in to play. He won everything.
Balls knocked between feet and chest were dealt with brilliantly and he showed strength.
there’s a case for him up top with Doyle and Jarvis / Keogh in behind ahead of 3 holding midfielders.
Whether or not the report is true, he’s got a point:
Why did wolves sign him? That’s an excellent question?
No one doubts that Doyle’s been quality but only scoring 6 goals this season isn’t a great deal. Fair point.
Andy Kepgh was out injured and probably has a worse goals to games ratio compared to the Hoff, yet played as soon as he was fit. That’s not fair.
I don’t think anyone can honestly judge the Hoff based on his limited appearances. If he’s been poor in training, it doesn’t always mean players carry that into games.
He might not be technically gifted but he may have scored a few goals in a team that struggle to find the back of the net. He causes defenses problems and his goal scoring record in Austria is excellent.
If he was bought in for £2M he should have been given a fair chance and run in the team. I hope he bangs them in for Bristol City and contributes to our all important run in.

Waste of money,time,space,etc,etc.

He’ll be off. Anyone who shows Mick opposition goes… roy keane, mcindoe, bothroyd etc
Report abuse
How can he be branded a flop after just two full games? McCarthy has killed more confidence than inches in this guy’s height, but he needs to go to Bristol City and prove the words – true or false whatever they are.
Your not seeing the bigger picture. Mick brought Stefan off at Man U after he made a deliberate 2 footed tackle on a player who had just fowled him and p**d off that he didn’t get anything for.
The bloke has a temper and it hadn’t gone unnoticed by Mick. He’s sees Hoff as a liability and not surprising as he had already seen a straight red card this season.
We said when he was substituted during the ManU game that it’ll be his last game for wolves because Mick with his stubbornness will never let him live it down.
What I’ve seen of the Hoff (and in the reserves) it will come as a big surprsie if he’s good enough for Bristol City.
But Guediuora was given a chance because he’s good enough.
He does not have a point at all.
He’s played games and not performed well enough to be even 3rd choice striker.
He was woeful again Man U in the cup and for a guy his size couldn’t head a ball for toffee. Out jumped by guys 8 inch smaller.
You gotta earn your place pal. Like it or not, Keogh had some great games before his injury. SEB is a waste of space for me, but he has earned his place in the squad from the last season and a half.
I rather think there has been some mischief-making here. Unfortunately it’s given the opportunity for the usually whingers to have a moan.
I have not been impressed by what little I’ve seen of him. Strangely, he does’nt seem all that good in the air.
However, as with all foreign players, it seems to take a while to adjust to the pace of the Premeirship. On that basis, he may well still be successful. Lets hope so.

John De Wolf – good to see you’re back with another huge dollop of hindsight on your plate !!
Could you really see the Hoff playing out on the right Like Keogh did at Bolton to cover our winger shortage ? Could you really see the Hoff coming on away at Burnley and holding the ball up to retain possesion better than Keogh ? No.
Have you checked your stats ? Kenwyn Jones, £15mn rated – 8 goals. Rodallega, linked with £15mn move to Villa – 8 goals. Craig Bellamy, Man City regular – 8 goals. Suddenly Doyle’s 6 goals don’t look too bad do they ?
Enough with the school boy punditry, Do you think McCarthy bought the Hoff to not play ? Seasons pan out in ways you cant always see. What if Doyle had been injured and the Hoff had been fit ? It could have been very different. Still, you’d have known all of this at the start of these season and therefore would have made better signins, eh?
Absoultely brilliant AGAIN! Everyones been saying he’s rubbish for weeks and when Mick admits he has made a mistake (strange that as he is pig headed and stubborn I am told???) by loaning him out the guy all of a sudden deserves a chance??? Keogh was going to be “like a new signing” when he got fit two weeks ago. Now he’s Micks love child again and “lets play The Hoff”…. surely people must see how hypocritical this all is. Its classic comedy aswell though!
Scored on his debut as a sub when we were being slaughtered at Blackburn. Got sent off at Everton and I don’t think MM was impressed.Got injured somehow and it’s absolutely good for him to get a loan and some games. Played for 80 mins the other night.Hope he comes good.
Said or not- the guy has got a point, McCarthy has given him almost no chance to show why he plays for his country Austria, and continues to pick his favourite players over others ie- kightly and Ebanks Blake- neither able to ‘cut the mustard’ in this division.
With the exception of Hannermann,Doyle & Zubar, all other signings have been given short shift, as most are finding the pace of the premier division very difficult….but withsome support and play time’ from McCarthy would show players like ‘Hoff- Milijas-Castello- & Hartford better than they have been allowed to perform.
McCarthy is a menace…follow the lead of Hull, rid ourselves of this parasite
Report abuse
My only criticism of Mick McCarthy is he really can’t handle criticism of Mick McCarthy.
If the Hoff’s got any sense he’ll use this alleged mis-understanding article to confirm how he never said that, and actually what a great opportunity being at Wolves is for his career…and maybe he’ll still have one.
Iwelumo probably feels the same, but knows better than to publically criticise the boss. Anyone sucking up to the boss like Iwelumo’s interview yesterday is sure to get straight back in the team!
Mick switched to 4-5-1, which I agree with, so its most unlikely any striker other than Doyle would have been starting anytime soon.
Anyway, my understanding was the Hoff’s role was always going to be from the bench, to add something different to the attack.
I think Mick thought the Halford/Hoff combo tactic of ‘throw the ball to the giant’ would have been more successful than it was, and he’s written it off as a tactic.
Maybe thats a little unfair, cause those early games were pretty difficult for everyone, & anyone associated with them seems have been written off. I’d like to see how Milijas, Castillo & occasionally the Hoff would fit in now we are playing some good stuff, especially now Jarvis is actually putting some accurate crosses in.
Who cares that he’s got the least technical ability, the Hoff will always cause chaos in the box on set pieces just by standing there.
If Hoff did say those things what`s the fuss about? he only spoke the truth. An international, experience in Europe and a proven goalscoring record but the Idiot wouldn`t give him a fair crack of the whip.It proves once again what a plonker McCarthy is.His pets can play when they haven`t trained but an experienced player can`t,doesn`t make sense, and youknow it McCarthy. Now, here`s a dream,McCarthy leaves, the sooner the better, and Mourinho comes in.

4 – Robert Taylor was hilarious. I remember Wolves fans shouting for him to be sent off he was so bad!
Who could blame him if he did say it. If he didn’t he should have. He’s been treated like s*** by Mad Mick and the muppets. Whether he did or did not say what is alleged, good luck to him!

Agreed Stefan,
6 in 26 is not good enough Doyle chips in but he is ment to be a striker, strikers Score Goals Mick (or suppost to) hey i can be a wolves manager ……
heres what i will do
(1) play as many defenders as possable
(2) Spend money on players we dont use
(3) play marcus hannaman as a lone striker
(4) play every one out of possition
And finaly
Tell Mad Dog Mick that buying irish players does not mean that there will be a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow
maybe mick has become to big for the club huh ?
I agree with Stefan in regards to his comment on the Andy Keogh Situation as do all who have commented by the looks of it
BUT… he can not knock Kevin Doyle because he has run most defences ragged this season and really puts in a shift even if he hasnt scored as much as we have hoped, Doyler has the ability to bring defenders out of position which then opens up spaces for others to try and create something, and not forgetting he is our top scorer
And to be fair when Stefan has played he hasnt looked the best, hes done nothing other than score a scrappy goal at Blackburn, got sent off at Everton and looked completely out of his depth at Old Trafford, i know he has had his hernia problems, but i would choose big Chris as a target man over him any day, and although im not Keoghs biggest fan, i think i would sooner have Keogh than him in my team from what i have seen so far. I hope he shines at Bristol and makes me eat my words and comes back a better player
1-0 to the Wolves on Saturday, Come on!!!
I actually think he would be right if this was his opinion. We have spent 2 mil on this player, not used him. The Keogh situation was bound to annoy him. If Mick doesnt rate him highly enough to give more of a chance then why buy him in the first place??
Maierhofer has got a really good point here. Once again it shows that MM waste’s wolves’s money hence why scouse morgan probly didnt give him any in january. I wouldn’t to be honest. The Hoffs’ goal record for his previous club is pretty good and he’s definately more of a threat than Andy Keogh. MM only plays his favourites and whether we stay up or go down, im worried about the lack of quality signings we will bring in next season.
He is absolutely spot on and it’s about time someone spoke out. Seems like open your mouth to MM and you are doomed to the bench. If you are one of his favourites you get a game anyway despite lack of form. Wonder if Milijas has said something hence his full 90 minute bench warming role. Ah well at least he might get a game in Africa this summer.

He will be on his way alongwith quite a few others like Halford, Daniel Jones etc.

Let’s not forget, if we stay up this season, we have to pay Rapid Vienna a further 900K as part of the deal to bring him here – the deal made by the same Moxey that so many people praise for making a profit of £1m on Camara!
£900K – that’s over £62 from each of the 14,500 early bird season tickets sold.

in my opinion a player with his goal scoring record, 1 in 2 games where ever he,s played should have been given more of a chance, you cant judge him on his bit part appearances for us so far. mick watches him day to day and obviously does,nt like what he,s seen in training so i guess taff has dropped a big clanger or was on the banks,s when watching his dvd,s. moxy must be pulling his hair out because if we stay up we pay another 900,000 to rapid vienna… get your cards taff..

No 29 Simon in Oklahoma, Your spot on ,i would sooner play Big Chris Iwelumo has the lone striker with Doyle,Jarvis, along side him has with his height/strength he’s ideal for flicking on headers and knocking headers down for those two to run onto i think Doyle would score far more than his 6 goals so far and for the rest of our midfield to pick up the knock downs/bits. Plus now he’s sharper he may even chip in with the odd goal. Like AV do with Carew/Heskey,who then brings their 4 midfielders into play, then play Foley LB and give Ward a rest as he’s always out of position when it comes to marking his man, he stands off far to much for my liking he needs to be tighter when the player recieves the ball. But KF is a natural FB who plays and thinks like one, if not KF the Mancienne who again is a natural defender

By the way wheresthis superb winger we bought from the continent? oh yes in training hes great apparently.
ifeel sorry for Vokes as well never given a run.
But at the end of the day keep it up Mick we look well placed to stay up
