Albion could again look at loans

Albion could dip into the loan market in the final week of business after defender Jonas Olsson was added to his lengthening injury list.

Steven Reid, Olsson and Roman Bednar will all be sidelined for the home game with Preston North End on Saturday and Olsson and Bednar could be out for two to three weeks, while Jerome Thomas is also struggling to be fit the next game.

That could force head coach Roberto Di Matteo to strengthen in the loan market before next Thursday’s final transfer deadline.

The Italian said: “It all depends on injuries and we will have to see how the players are. With everybody fit I would happy with the squad we’ve got, but that isn’t the case at the moment. So we will see how the players are before we decide anything.

“Jonas has picked up an injury, so he won’t be available for Saturday and we don’t know about the next game yet but it’s going to be very difficult for him. It’s an injury to the top of his calf. It’s not too bad and hopefully it shouldn’t be too long.”

Clubs have until 5pm next Thursday to bring in players on emergency loans and the Baggies have scope for more signings.

Managers can name up to five domestic loan players in matchday squads, but Albion currently only have Reid and Ben Watson borrowed from English clubs.

Di Matteo is keen to ensure sufficient options for the final nine games of the season, as his side look to protect their eight-point lead over third-placed Nottingham Forest and secure an automatic return to the Premier League.

Thomas is the only one of his walking wounded with an outside chance of recovering before the weekend.

The Baggies boss said: “I’m not expecting anybody to recover for Saturday. They’re getting better but they are still out. Steven’s injury isn’t a bad one, but he played three games in seven days and I don’t think he’s done that for years.

“The sheer volume of games you play increases the risk. Roman is doing his rehab but he will be out for a couple of weeks.  Jerome is getting better and we will see how he is today.”

Except for Nouble, RDM has done well. I back his judgement.

Am i right thinking that Di Matteo doesnt pick the players that come in?? Because he is only a head Coach is it right that Ashdown i think his name is ,chooses the players to come in. Let me know if this is the case. Boing Boing

I think Dan Ashworth has said `previously that he only brings players in if RDM approves them first.

no di Matteo has the final say on players coming in and out. ashworth acts more like a head scout and negotiator. once a decision on a players is made ashworth is the main negotiator.

Unsure who chooses players to come in whoever
it is hes done well Nouble never really got
involved partly being cup tied anyway weve got
our penalty grabber in Barnes what odds for another v Preston ?? should be comfortable as
long as Mighty is switched on he makes me nervous. Toon & Forest have easy ones Sat so we mustnt slip up.

its kinda confusing weather RDM gets the final say on transfers because you only have to look at the jara confusion… anyone remember that?

I think the problem there was that either his club or his agent or both tried to have us over. JP was having none of it and we eventually got him on the terms we wanted. There was no confusion on our side.

    BB,

I think the way it works,Roberto puts forward the name of a player targeted. He and dan discuss the player, then Jeremy is approached and after further discussion if all agree, then Jeremy negotiates a deal with the players clubs Chairman.
    I don’t think I’m far away.

I would guess that player selection is a mix of all the above – RDM may name a player he is interested in and Ashworth may check him out – or RDM may just highlight a position he wants strengthening and Ashworth will have a dossier of players for him – or maybe the scouting system will bring a player to the managers attention and he can have a look.

Whatever the system is, you gotta say its working pretty well.

Jeremy Peace buys and picks the players then
Roberto Di Matteo and Dan Ashworth have to say
they come up with them,it doesnt really matter
who buys the players as long as they are doing
    the bizzo which they are.
Albion dont need anymore loan deals and we can
make do with what we have at the moment.

Teamwork, the key to everything on and off the field, although being realistic, someone has to have the final say. Sad about Nouble but, like Jay Simpson, once they leave London, they can’t speaka da lingo! Any more London kids should start their Midlands tour along Broad Street in Brum at about 10pm, then they’ll think it’s home-from-home. Coming out of Symphony Hall on a bitterly cold night, wrapped up so only our eyes showing and there they are, gorgeous damsels in a figure-hugging, short dress, with the Gallery full to bursting point. I think there’ll be lots of that old bloke Arthur Itis around in years to come.

Jeremy Peace has the final say in a transfer
situation,he is an adept businessman and the
transfer terms must be to the benefit of WEST
BROMWICH ALBION.We rely on him to keep us solvent.

From what I remember of a story earlier this year the way it works is as follows.

RDM highlights where he feels the team needs strengthening and takes his wishlist to Dan Ashworth.

Dan Ashworth then comes back to RDM with a shortlist of players available and suitable and then after discussing the options, RDM tells Dan Ashworth which one to go get.

I’m pretty sure that’s what was in the paper earlier this year, when the E&S spoke to Dan Ashworth.

Hi Quinton. The daytime ones are getting funny messages from E&S, like ‘site not found’ and ‘slow down, you’re posting too quickly’. I’ve been wiring and plumbing an instant water heater in for a relative and I was so tired I went to bed at 8pm last night and slept until 2.30am. Hence 4.06am blog.
The one I just sent vanished completely!

Cyril, glad you posted about the problems. This must be the reason why 2 of my posts appeared yesterday using slightly different words for the same meaning. I am probably of a similar age to you and these machines are a mystery. Where DO the words go for a few hours before they appear? Reading the above comments about who is responsible for choosing and signing players there seems to be some confusion. However if you look at the article on Dorrans it seems Dan Ashworth is the man although I always thought Dorrans was a “Mowbray connection”
