Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Maierhofer out but Iwelumo back
Monday 15th March 2010, 11:40AM GMT.
Forgotten Wolves striker Stefan Maierhofer was today set to join Bristol City on a month’s loan – as Chris Iwelumo returned to Molineux.
Maierhofer was due to see his desire for first team football granted with a stint with the Robins and a double-quick Championship debut at Plymouth tomorrow.
The Austrian international has made just one Premier League start since his £1.8m move from Rapid Vienna – the controversial 3-0 defeat at Manchester United in December and hasn’t appeared since.
Maierhofer, 27, has also struggled with several niggling injuries with his foot and ankle, but is now fit again and keen to see an end to his frustrating wait for first team football.
Iwelumo, meanwhile, was today back on the Compton training ground after returning from his loan spell from Ashton Gate.
The Scotland international has spent a month on loan with City building up his match sharpness, scoring twice in seven appearances.
Boss Mick McCarthy has now decided to bring the striker back to add strength to the squad in readiness for the last nine games.
“Chris has enjoyed his time at Bristol City playing games and scoring a couple of goals,” said the boss.
“It’s given him the chance to build his match sharpness up.
“He had the opportunity to stay there for longer and also go elsewhere but decided he wanted to come back and try and force his way into the team.
“Like all of the squad, he just wants to be involved and that’s a really positive attitude to have.”
Iwelumo will now join the rest of the squad in battling for a place in the squad for Saturday’s local derby at Villa.

He should never wear the old gold and black ever again…Good to see big chris back

How about E-Banks Blake he should of joined a champ team on loan- easier to off load if stay up or get a bit of playing practice for next season if we go down. Either way he needs to be playing in the Champ next season.

Great win on saturday exacly what we needed!!! this is also what we needed iwelumo coming back full of confidence and maierhofer going out on loan to get some much needed playing time!!! PHIL BROWN HAS GONE WHICH IS GREAT NEWS!!!! KEEP IT UP GUYS WE CAN DO IT!!!!!
Chris Iwelumo must, repeat must be in the squad to meet Villa, and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake sidelined
Chris is on fire, and we need goals
Report abuse
Sensible decisions. We will now see what Maierhofer can do in the Championship,if he does well he will be sharper for the last few games and may or may not play a part for us in the futuure. Iwelumo will be fitter after his period on loan and might make an impact from the bench.
Jono, whats Stefan ever done to you? And dont comment on his play because none of us have seen him in any reasonable amount of action. What I saw in just 5 minutes against Bolton at home was a committed player who actually cleared one off the boot of a Bolton player about to score. Lets see how he gets on at Bristol.

think mairhoffer will be surprise package nxt season, ebanks sold in summer and iwelumo sold as well, strengthen in the summer.utw
Report abuse
Looks like you’re going to stay up by default.
This is a smart move by Wolves. Iwelumo will have benefited from the six games and it can only benefit Maierhofer.
In a months time we could have all our strikers fit and available for the final games.
Should have happened months ago. Shame he didn’t make the grade; but get him fit, put him in the shop window and try to recoup some of the 1.8 Million. The same should have been done with Blake.
Ugly win on Saturday but at this point in the campaign 3 points is the priority.
Many pundits/experts have said the standard of the bottom six this season is the worst in PL history; this however maybe to our benefit. Whoever finishes 17th may have the lowest points total since the PL began; and survive! Coupled with the fact that Portsmouth is gone makes it only a “two team relegation season”. This year is our best chance; if we can’t survive this year then we truly don’t belong in the PL
I’m not getting carried away yet as there is Still work to be done. UTW

What’s he done so wrong, Jono?
WELL, I FEEL SORRY FOR THE GUY, NOT GIVEN ENOUGH PLAYING TIME. YOU CANT JUDGE A PLAYER ON JUST A COUPLE OF OUTINGS.

Where is the bad news here? ….None!
Welcome back Chris.

Well said 6, bags more committment in the fleeting few minutes we have seen him other than in the reserve team at Man U than SEB has shown all season. A player made for the Halford throws but one that has obviously looked the wrong way at MM and therefore like so many others will be unable to ever demonstrate their true potential to us.Quite how Morgan allows this man to spend money and then never give players a run is baffling
Report abuse
Brought back our obviously championship level striker and got rid of our expensive international striker who has clearly never been given a chance to prove himself. How is this good news?
Comment 1–JONO, Just the kind of thick ignorant comment I would expect from someone who has possibly never even seen him play.
Good move I hope MM plays him upfront with Doyle in the hole, its about time SEB went out to a good championship side to sharpen up and regain confidence
Report abuse
Iwelumo is only good enough for an average Championship side – the likes of Newcastle and Sandwell Town wouldn’t touch him. Ebanks-Blake is like Pele in comparison.

8. Jealous Baggie. ”Default” Yeah thats right a long season of 38 games ends with a default result. In fact we’ve made hard work of it for ourselves and spent less money than you did and have already done better than you ever have in this div. Muppett! We aren’t even safe yet anyway and if we stay up its because we have earned it and because we are good enough. Cos lord knows if we go down it won’t be by default will it?

“He should never wear the old gold and black ever again”
It would be nice if he actually had chance to wear it! This is a player than has experience in European competition but McCarthy seems reluctant to give a chance to.
I agree, he could be the surprise package next year, although it is more likely Mick will sell him off as he does so many.
Big Chris scored some cracking goals last season, and plenty of them early on.
But he can’t score if he’s not playing – give him a break!
Is this the same Mairhoffer that has the touch of a wardrobe?
Mick has not picked him because he is obviously not playing very well in training games.
Remember Mick has seen him play.
Anyway, it does not matter what we think. Mick is the main man. And whatever he thinks i go with. He knows exactly what he is doing. That is why he is the most succesful Wolves manager in years.
Yes, Golden Blood; Mick has now seen him play, and obviously doesn’t rate him. Just a pity that we had to shell out nearly £2m to get Maierhoffer over here to enable McCarthy to come to that conclusion.
No more YouTube signings, please.
Think we should do a straight swop. Both of them for Maynard!

Golden Blood
Great comment my sentiments exactly.

Mazhoooooffer Not given a chance iLUMOOO 2 IN 8 in fizzy pop league. Karl Henry garbage and we might still stay up. when we get rid of henry we wil be ok

Great result on the weekend and I hope we get on a roll now. Good to see Hull gave Brown the flick hopefully they get someone crap in like Megson. Having said that, Hull have an easier run in of games than us. We’ve got Villa and the Gunners coming up and they’ve got pompey, fulham (distracted by europe), stoke and then burnely which are all winnable games. In fact the only really tough game they have is the last match against Liverpool. Exciting couple of months coming up. C’mon the mighty Wanderers.

SEB isn’t getting a chance, but the fact is he is a goalscorer. Doyle is a good player but isn’t exactly racing up the goal scoring chart. SEB should get a few starts and then you will see he can cut it at this level. If he were playing in a better team, he’d be getting more chances and scoring more. Perhaps we can’t afford that luxury now, but there’s no way I would let him leave, because hs proved 2 seasons in a row that he is one of our best players. If we start to rise up the table next year (touch wood) then he will play a bigger part.
I would have liked Maierhofer to have been given some more chances too, but MM surely sticks with his favourites.
Keogh is a donkey.
Ward is average Championship quality at best.
Foley in midfield is contributing very little.
Henry isn’t cutting it.
Milijas like SEB is perhaps a luxury we can’t afford yet, but I’d pick him above Henry any day of the week in the system we are playing.
28 – How can you say Henry isn’t cutting it? Have you been to any games this season?
Foley, is been played out of position and still manages to give 100% everyweek! Sign of a good player, if you ask me!
29 – I’ve been to them all, and Henry definately isn’t cutting it. And foley is an OK player, but only at right back.

29. I have watched every game of the season so far (live on TV) which probably entitles me to a view.
Thanks 30.

Maierhoffer to Coventry after his outburst against the Mighty Mick McCarthy……see ya!

Hoofmeister is not a professonal footballer and should stick to cooking.Maybe he can get a job in Sir Jack’s restaurant when he comes back from Bristol.I didn’t think it was possible to sign anybody worse than Tomasz Frankowski, but we did.
GET RID AND MOVE ON,
PS welcome back BIG CHRIS

Stefan Maierhofer is a lot better than Andy Keogh.
McCarthy just sticks with his favourties, e.g. Ward, Henry, Foley, Berra, Keogh we do have better players than them in like Castillo, Halford, Stearman, Maierhofer.
STEFAN MAIERHOFER DU DU DU.
35 are you joking? for a start we haven’t seen enough of the Hoff to be able to make that judgement, and, Keogh when played this season has performed admirably and the team has looked better for his inclusion. I agree Ward is not the required standard but neither is Halford. Foley has done well out of position and when he finally reverts back to RB we will have arguably the best RB in the bottom half of the table. I like Castillo and think he is probably a better footballer than Henry but Henry has not put a foot wrong and plays his heart out for the club he supports and when the chips are down you know a guy like that will put himself on the line. But as for him, Berra and Ward if we stop up would they ideally be in my starting line up next season? No I would hope we would bring in some real quality but certainly Berra and Henry will have a part to play and if they keep us up they have earned the right to at least fight for a shirt next year.

Good Riddance Maierhoffer! Surely the biggest Donkey ever seen in a Wolves shirt. How can someone so tall win so few headers? After those comments About MM don’t think he’ll be seen in Wolvo any time soon!!
first things first karl henry has had a good season in my oppinion, he is one of our more composed players who doesnt have alot to go with when players arent moving for him, thus the wonderful back pass is his only option, and as for the hoff i dont think we need him right now but i would hold on 2 him if u can teach him a thing or 2 in the off season, if stoke havent pinched him from us for like 300k. i would put doyle wide right and let him be free to roam, whilst someone like big chris or SEB play straight up top.
everyones gotta b up for it, players, staff and fans. . . . even those in the billy quiet, steve bull an North bank, an us SOUTH BANK lot will obviously b playin our part!
