Villa boss’ message for Beye
Saturday 13th March 2010, 11:28AM GMT.
Villa manager Martin O’Neill has insisted unsettled right-back Habib Beye has to cope with his frustration at being a fringe player.
Beye, a £2.5m signing from Newcastle last summer, has made just 10 appearances for Villa this season and recently revealed his unrest at his lack of first-team opportunities, admitting it could force him to look for a new club for next season.
It has heralded a sympathetic response from the Villa boss – but O’Neill says he just has to get on with it.
“I understand it, I really do,” he said. “It is hard for them (players on the periphery) because even though the team is doing well it’s still hard.
“Some players’ chances here have been less than other players’, there’s no doubt about that – it’s going in and doing well.
“Sometimes you don’t feel a real part of it, even though you might be sub. Because if you don’t get on you haven’t shared in those moments, so all of those things I understand.
“This might be Habib’s longest spell outside somebody’s first team and you have to cope with things like that.”
Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker has moved a step closer to a return by resuming light training.
Reo-Coker has been sidelined since fracturing his ankle in January but boss Martin O’Neill says both he and striker Marlon Harewood (broken metatarsal) are making pleasing progress.
He said: “Nigel’s not back in (full) training, but the news has been good. He’s been given the go ahead just to do a wee bit of light work, he’s just jogging at the moment.
“The news has also been good for Marlon, but they won’t be able to join in at this minute. Holding Nigel back would be the biggest thing because he’s doing really well.”
