Burnley 1 Wolves 2

Burnley 1 Wolves 2

Wolves moved three points clear of the relegation zone after making the most of their breaks with a priceless victory over rivals Burnley.

Matt Jarvis ended Wolves’ 359-minute wait for a goal in the first-half and Adlene Guedioura gave them a two-goal cushion two minutes after the break as the club moved level on points with West Ham, where they go a week on Tuesday.

The visitors withstood late pressure following Steven Fletcher’s 73rd minute header but, with the Hammers and Wigan also losing, it was a good day for the team, half dozen of whom tossed their shirts into the jubilant 2,300 sell-out following at the final whistle.

Burnley started well and had two long range shots on target in the first five minutes.

Chris Eagles cut inside and let fly from 25 yards for a low drive that was tipped around the post by goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann needlessly, as it turned out after replays showed the ball was going wide.

Graham Alexander was next to have a go, his rising effort from similar distance forcing Hahnemann to acrobatically drop on the ball.

David Jones attempted to launch a response but his header flew straight at former Albion goalkeeper Brian Jensen, who was then booked for diving headlong into Kevin Doyle and bringing the striker down out wide.

Ex-Walsall left back Danny Fox also had Hahnemann in action to tip a curling free kick over midway through the half.

But Wolves then grabbed the vital breakthrough through Jarvis to give themselves a lifeline.

Doyle hooked on a loose ball on the halfway line and Jarvis deserves huge credit for chasing down Tyrone Mears’s backpass header, before cleverly slotting the ball one side of Jensen and running around the other for a simple finish.

Then Doyle was a foot wide with a left foot snapshot on the turn, before David Nugent had Wolves’ hearts in their mouths a minute before the break going for his third goal in as many games.

The on-loan Portsmouth striker’s hooked volley bounced into the ground, before hitting the top of the bar and over.

But if Wolves were looking for the perfect start to the second half, it couldn’t have come much better than a second goal two minutes after the interval.

Stephen Ward cleverly won the ball on the left and fed Matt Jarvis, who stayed on his feet to find Ronald Zubar to his right.

The Frenchman let the ball run across his body and, just when it had looked to run too close to a defender, in came Guedioura for a first-time angled drive that crucially clipped the heels of Carlisle before neslting in the corner of the net

That goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of Burnley and Wolves had little trouble containing the hosts before the hour.

Doyle went within inches of a third Wolves goal when his tight angled effort spun across goal, replays showing the ball clearly warmed the hands of Jensen but the officials didn’t see.

Burnley then hauled themselves back into the game 17 minutes from time, when Fletcher headed Alexander’s shot into the ground beyond Hahnemann.

ABOUT TIME WE GOT A BIT OF LUCK. I THOUGHT IF WE LOST TODAY THAT WOULD’VE BEEN IT FOR US.

3 POINTS CLEAR AND A SUPERIOR GOAL DIFFERENCE.

TWO WINS MORE AND I THINK WE’LL BE FINE CAUSE I CAN’T SEE BURNLEY OR HULL GETTING 10 POINTS FROM 8/9 GAMES.

    WITH GAMES LIKE;

    BLACKBURN (POSSIBLE)
    FULHAM (POSSIBLE)
    SUNDERLAND (POSSIBLE)
    ASTON VILLA
    ARSENAL
    PORTSMOUTH (POSSIBLE)
    WEST HAM (POSSIBLE)
    EVERTON (POSSIBLE)
    STOKE (POSSIBLE)

SURELY WE CAN WIN AT LEAST TWO OF THESE.

A massive result today and well done to the team.

It’s about time we had some luck on our side and it should help our confidence no end.

I hope Mcarthy dosen’t see this vindicates his negative attacking approach as we still need to revert to 442 bringing in attacking players at the start or early in the game.

We were still weak on the right hand side and no bite in midfield, which puts pressure on the defence.

Matt Jarvis deserved his goal and his overall play is very much like Doyle.

There are still difficult games ahead but all of them for the taking, but we have to score goals.

Well done again and lets look forward to Arsenal beating Hull tonight.

Gutsy if uninspiring performance but make no bones about it a GREAT RESULT! What with Hull losing too 9 more points should be more than enough Wigan look likely to be dragged right into it and West Ham too we could end up a few places above. Wolvesmod,

Burnley, if you would like to look at the table, are one of the teams below us, they are one of the teams that we would target at the start of the season as being one we must get results against to stand a chance of staying in this division.

They are a team we have thankfully done the double over this season, putting us 3 points clear of relegation with superior goal difference.

So if you would like to take your head out of your behind, which I presume you speak with, and congratulate the lads on what is a massive result given where a loss would have put us, it would be appreciated.

It’s views like yours that have influenced the Board that have kept us out of the Premier over the years (except for 1 brief season)

Wolves have had 3 full International Managers – so they were good enough to manage their National Teams – but not good enough for some of the fans who hounded them out. Sir Jack admited as much when he commented re Graham Taylor. I accept negative criticism of Hoddle – though we do not know how much went on behind the scenes.

We need consistency – get off Mick’s back and support your team.

Not a great performance but who cares?
It gave us the 3 points we desperately needed to put a little daylight between us and the bottom 3.
It was never going to be an easy game and so it proved, but I for one am enjoying our second double of the season today.
Let’s not kid ourselves though, there is still a hell of a lot to do to secure our status. Games like this will be required to ensure we do stay up.

Doyle was so close to getting the goal his performances so far have really deserved, there is definitely a goal round the corner for him. Jarvis again showed what a threat he can be with his pace. I loved the way he jinked round Jensen before almost running the ball into an empty net.
Guedioura’s goal was a MAJOR slice of luck, but he’s just proved what a lot of us have been saying all season, SHOOT ON SIGHT. If we don’t shoot we won’t score and we need more players to have a dip from outside the box. That kind of goal can happen more if we shoot from there more.

One result does not keep us up but it gives a much needed boost for both players and fans, and of course those 3 all important points.
The way I see it, if Mick and the lads believe then so must we all.
Compared to last time in this league we are doing FAR better and we’re still improving.
A couple more wins and draws and I think we’ll still be here next season. It’s not mission impossible, it’s mission very possible IMO if we apply ourselves correctly and good luck stays with us a little longer.

Most people will probably write off our chances at Villa Park but who knows, if we can keep up the better performances (Spurs and Man U. at home) then we may be able to give another side who play in claret and blue something to think about.

Keep the faith Wolves fans, it’s still all in our hands.

Well done Jarvis, thoroughly deserved goal for a season full of top drawer wing play. I note that Doyle played his ball through showing that the 4-5-1 only describes us when we don’t have possession. I saw bodies streaming forward when had the ball, much more than in previous games.

Our back 4 are looking solid, especially Foley and Zubar. Adi looks to have an incredible premiership future if he can learn to harry without picking up cards and for a time the midfield were probing forward instead of dabbing it back to Haneman.

An unchanged side with momentum at the end of the season is just what the Dr. ordered. Some fans called it at the start of the season, a nice sized squad that’s the envy of many injury hit teams at the end of the season. I think we may just end this run with games to spare.

Overly optimistic? Not for the objectives of this season. Next season we all have the right to demand more. MM will have won the right to spend real money and no-one -least of all me – will be satisfied with a relegation fight.

Lastly, why do fans say ‘Wolves til I die?’ Surely a major perk of the after life will be to float into the stands and scream silently alongside old Gold friends (with the Mrs performing an invisible lap dance at half time!). Up the Wolves!

Great win. People go on about Burnley being unlucky or poor defending – but credit has to be given a, for the flick on by Doyle to set up Wolves opener and b, for Jarvo reading the situation so well. He still had a lot of work to do before tucking that goal away. Some say Guedioura’s goal was a slice of luck- and we do deserve some of that – but I disagree. Yes it was deflected – but you have to shoot to score – and did you see where the ball would have gone to in any event ? Burnleys marking was so poor that the ball would have made its way to an unmarked Kevin Doyle who surely would have scored in front of goal. In addition to that – Jarvo had jinked inside the box and was clearly fouled before passing the ball – if he had gone down – stonewall pen !! Well done Wolves ;-)

Yes Yes Yes, it´s a wonderful free world and spaces like this are great for venting frustrations and airing opinions and we should all be very appreciative of that. And of course we should respect the fact that everybody is different and has a right to a point of view and an opinion, even if some of them are hard to take. Sorry to have to point the finger at Wolvesmod but did you ever see anything the guy ever wrote that suggested he was proud to be a Wolves fan. I for one haven´t.
I have to say that a bold chairman would, if he really wanted his club to climb the Prem ladder, think about appointing a new manager who by his own personality and character could inspire good players to come to this club. ( not withstanding the pay structure the same chairman has a sensible right to stick to). I think we´re all agreed we don´t want to become another Portsmouth now do we? Mick is a good old boy but in my view that´s about all. Good at getting teams out of the Championship but let´s be fair, he needs some serious time spent figuring where to go from there instead of being given the reins. A bold chairan would say thanks, here´s yer kiss off. Now let´s go Wolves and let´s go good
Old Gold forever, there´s nothing quite like it

Well done Mick and the whole team!!

Ok, I’d like about 38 points to be relaxed come May 9th but in reality I can see….

Villa and Hammers away – defeat in one, draw in the other (bragging rights aside would rather not lose to West Ham than Villa) = Pld 31 Pts 28 then…

    Everton: draw = 29
    Arsenal: defeat
Stoke & Blackburn: win in one, draw in the other = 33
    Fulham: defeat
    Pompey: draw = 34
    Sunderland: draw = Pld 38 Pts 35.

The sooner Portsmouth lose their 9 points the better and I expect either Hull or Burnley to meakly slip out on twentysomething points too which leaves us just about safe but only by 1 or 2 points at most. Two out of three (WW, Wigan and either Hull or Burnley) will be safe. Can’t see West Ham or Bolton pulling right away but they’ll have enough to steer clear.

As said elsewhere, a defeat yesterday would have been a disaster so hopefully a point or two on the road in Brum and east London then can we please start picking up a lot more points at home, please, pretty please!

i watched the full game replay today and this is my view of what i saw, whether some think its constructive or not. I’ve been saying for a while results are the most important thing, and we did that yesterday, yes with a bit of luck Turf moor is a difficult place to come and win, and I think we deserved it, particularly for our 1st half performance.
Our second goal was a pure fluke and it looks like thats the only way we can score more than one goal- remember the hull game? This still worries me.
I still think we have a lot to learn about how to kill off games. With Burnley 2-nil down and bombing forward we had 2 or 3 great openings to score on the counter and finish the game off and didnt take them, We really do lack a cutting edge. MM subsitutions continue to be late. He was spot on with guediora, who was making rash challenges, and put mancienne on, but took too long to put two up front, to take pressure of our defence.
In the end if didnt affect the result, but against a better forward line than burnleys we would have got pegged back or even lost the game – like at birmingham.
The win has made my weekend but I’m a realist, and I know this game went our way because we scored first against decent but not top class opposition.

So if you are not a fan of MM you are a cretin. Obviously John is a very clever bloke does he not realise it is MM who has selected the team for all the games we have lost as well. If you have an opinion about the manager and the vast majority do not like MM i don’t think it means we are damaging the club.

Great Result and a treasured 3 point cushion but don’t get carried away, the goal we conceded was dreadful. Congratulations to all involved but there is a long way to go yet and nothing as really changed. The late substitutions beggar belief and whilst we took all 3 points from a very poor team, that ain’t going to happen for the remaining games. Right now, I’m delighted Owen Coyle went to Bolton.

Well lots of contentious views on here. Split between so called True Wolves fans Boo Boys Cretins etc.

I for one thought the hiring of MM was a good move for getting us out of the championship as he had a proven record. Super Mick to some and Mad Mick to others. I’ll be honest I think he is out of his depth in this league and thats only because of the competion of Managers around him.

I cant see that there is anything wrong in having an opinion about our Club whether it be perceived as good or bad. I dont condone and never will booing of our own players, as its down to the Manager to select a team and if a player is not playing well should be substitued.

I cant see any evidence from Morgan or Moxey of great ambition and that frustrates me more than anything.

Apart from that a massive 3 points at the WE another 8 to go. Good alos to see that SEB is looking thinner too, maybe he can come on and save our season in the last game what a story that would make.

What a result, it’s great looking at the league table this morning. Plus Hull have just sacked or put Phil Brown on ‘gardening leave’ so I reckon they’ll be in serious trouble making that kind of change at this point in the season. How good would it be now to turn over Villa, both for our survival and to keep them out of the CL places!?!?

Browns Gone ! How ironic it would be if Nobby and Parkin now save Hull at our expense. At the very least Pearson is performing his role as Chairman with conviction.

We really cannot afford to slip up now as I have a lot of respect for Horton, his team will play football and have guts.

Also, the EPL are dragging their heels on the point deduction for Pompey, I hope the Administrator is wrong saying that it may not happen.

What fantastic support the Wolves fans gave the team at Burnley on Saturday I’ve been to a few Wolves away matches recently and the support has always been great but against Burnley its was at a different level.

Unfortunately the day was marred after the game with what can only be classed as disgraceful violent behaviour by the Lancashire Police. I been following football for over 40 years and I have never seen such behaviour from the Police. Whilst waiting outside our minibus for the Police to escort us away from the ground a senior Police officer deliberately charged at one of my colleagues as he was ushering others onto the minibus and when he asked why the officer pulled out his baton and went to hit my colleague for no reason whatsoever.

I always think when I read about this type of Police activity that there is no smoke without fire but now I have seen it for my own eye’s I know exactly what goes on. The Lancashire Police on duty at Burnley on Saturday should be ashamed of thereselves there’s use of reasonable force and then there is down and out Police brutality which was what happened to my colleague on Saturday.

We have the officers badge number and are contemplating making a formal complaint however I doubt very much anything will get done about it as we will be labelled as the “football minority” what a joke.

Crockett, I think the logic on the substitutions was correct.Against the Blues we were holding on to a one goal lead, but playing with only one striker the Blues centre backs had freedom to join the attack. This they did for the first goal by loading players at the far post.So the move on Saturday to 4 4 2 I think was to keep their centre backs busy backed by two banks of four.Teams if they are losing only tend to throw centre backs forward at the end of games so it is that period of the game when 4 5 1 is more vulnerable. That is my theory anyway.

Burnley are probably down as there away form is awful and they have a local derby against Blackburn plus Spurs, Liverpool and Man City at home. My only concern is Hull. I think West Ham and Wigan will be safe!
