Albion’s need for the Premier League
Friday 12th March 2010, 9:05AM GMT.
Albion guest blogger Pete ‘Hilltop Baggie’ Danckert hasn’t half drawn up his list to Santa early this year – and is expecting delivery to the Hawthorns for summer.
Tuesday’s game against Sheffield Wednesday was a tense affair for Albion, with few clear cut chances and the game was always going to be settled by something special.
When moments earlier Graham Dorrans had sent a vicious shot from distance only to be tipped over the bar, Jarrod ‘Bomber’ Hill turned to me and reckoned it would need something just like that to break the deadlock.
So as we watched Koren drop his shoulder and set himself we knew that moment was about to happen. A terrific goal, three points and the relief was unbelievable.
I mention that moment with some relish, because I thought we could have a look at the squad today, see where and what changes we think we need if we are to be successful this season.
Where better to start than with Koren. I’m not sure Robert will be with us next season, not because of his ability or lack of it but because he sees himself as a first-team player.
The same could be said of Felipe Teixiera, another player of undoubted ability, but I think unlikely to grace our team again. On the bright side we do have new players like Giles Barnes, with the returning Ishmael Miller and James Morrison.
So assuming we arrive at the Premier League front door again in May, I have got 13 in my squad who I think are good enough.
Goalkeeper Scott Carson, Gonzalo Jara, Gabriel Tamas, Jonas Olsson, Youssouf Mulumbu, Dorrans, Morrison, Chris Brunt, Jerome Thomas, Barnes, Ishmael Miller, Bednar and Simon Cox.
I’ve got another four players who are on the fringe in Marek Cech, Andy Slory, Chris Wood and Abdoulaye Meite.
Then there is another two who I am not sure what their loan deals entail, namely Ben Watson and Steven Reid. If we are in a position to sign them I would. That gives us 15 full teamers, and four who are either going to progress or be just cover.
What does that mean for our summer?
For starters there needs to be a goalkeeper to push our existing first choice and captain Carson. I believe Scotty is still going to be a great prospect, but he needs someone behind him to keep him on his toes, with Dean Kiely as goalkeeping coach and emergency cover.
The defence will need the most work. No doubts in my mind that Olsson and Tamas will cut it, but if they get injured we have absolutely no cover at all other than the multi-talented Jara.
Midfield is probably the strongest area and, without a doubt, all of the midfielders mentioned in my squad would be good enough.
If we have a problem it’s going to be hanging on to young Dorrans. There is no doubt that Graham will play at the very highest levels, in fact I would expect him to have Champions League experience before very long and would wish him well in his career.
My hope is that he wants to give us a couple of seasons first, if for nothing else but as a payback for recognising his talent and giving him the platform to show it off. Time will tell on that one.
Up front is still a bit of a mystery. Miller hasn’t got a full Premier League season under his belt yet, although just leading up to his injury was showing signs of adapting and developing into the real deal.
Bednar’s work rate and willingness is faultless, but he has to develop his game to make it in the greed league. Cox is the most untried and tested. I believe he possesses many qualities that liken him to a certain Mr Phillips that given time and work could be excellent, but whether he’d be ready for next season remains to be seen.
So summing up, at least four quality defenders, a goalkeeper and a goal scorer are our minimum requirements.
What do you think, have I got it wrong or are we on the right track?
Just one final note, I would like to send my best wishes to Bomber and Laura, thinking of you at this time.

One question – have you seen Slory play? He doesn’t look like he can cut it in the Championship, let alone the Prem. Ditto Wood, he needs to be loaned out for a couple of years.
Slory’s not match fit apparently, but has undoubted pedigree.

From the little ive seen him play its hard to make a definative decision. However, he does have pace and would benefit from a full pre season. But i think youll find i put him in my number two list as either cover or needs progress.

Promotion’s a big IF, but if that IF becomes reality, then as far as your 13 go, then I think your spot on Pete.
Full-backs and cover at centre-back would be a must, although I’d still love to see Zuiverloon fulfil his undoubted potential. If RDM wants to play 4-5-1, we’d need a real quality target man as well, seen as we only have Bednar who can effectively play that role.
I suspect we’d be looking abroad for value for money, but in terms of Premiership experience, any thoughts on the following:
Curtis Davies, Danny Fox, Nicky Shorey, Nedum Onouha, Steve Finnan, Hermann Hreidarsson, Jason Roberts, Dave Kitson, Benjani, David Nugent, Daniel Sturridge (loan), Aruna Dindane??
I don’t know Bomber’s personal circumstances, but he gets my best wishes whatever they may be. 3 points tomorrow, come on you Baggies!!
I think you have hit the nail on the head there, 2 new full backs are a must! GZ is so unpredictable and mattock isn’t premiership standard. I share your concern as to whether we can hold onto dorrans but i’m sure he will stay for at least another season unless we get a £7-8 million offer.
But with clubs struggling nowadays, we could be able to get a proven striker on a free or a lot less than what we would have paid 2 or 3 seasons ago so fingers crossed!
Anyway, were not there yet so lets no jinx ourselves until we have claimed at least 2nd spot.
Come on you Baggies

Each day I read this pages with interest… but usually without contributing – I usually switch off when the banter gets silly, but your opinions have encouraged a response as I agree with most of them… even if there’s a high degree of optimism underlying most of them – I share that optimism however I’m sure other comments will bring us both back down earth! Defence and strike force are defo the main concerns and we need real quality and EXPERIENCE in those areas, but I would add the management team to those areas in need of improvement – not suggesting a change, but a concern that Roberto will be even more out of his depth in the greedy league.. I think this is the area where we need to learn/progress quickly as the demands of short term success are even more prevalent in the Premier League than anywhere else. Hopefully there will be key lessons learnt between now and the end of the season. Best wishes to Bomber from here too…

Hilltop, from what I have seen recently I am not counting my chickens. Being realistic the only players in our squad who are Premier league quality are Dorrans, Morrison and when he is on form and not shouting at our supporters Olsson (although I feel he will move on in the summer)Tamas has done pretty well but if there interest from other clubs he can reject the move to us and stay with his parent club and he would then by free to move to another club if they accepted an offer, I dont think he would get anywhere near Vile’s first team though.
We should be clear of Forest now but our inconsistency and lack of quality has left this wide open and with Forest breathing down our necks we are under pressure.
If we were Premier league with this squad have we got a better side than Pompey, I do not believe we have. David James, O’Hara, Tommy Smith, Tel Ben Heim etc are players I would love at the Albion. We need at least 9 quality signings alongside the squad we already have and to shift out the dead-wood such as Carson, Moore, Tex, Reid, Zuiv, Mattock, Meite.
Yes but Pompey have a better squad than Burnley, Wolves & Hull.
Its what you do with that squad that counts. Thats why Newcastle got relegated last season.
We certainly have a better squad than Burnley, Wolves and Hull too!
I dont think we have got a better squad than Wolves or Pompey. I think we have a better squad than Hull but Burnley have a better starting 11.
If we did get uP, I think a golden hand-shake to RDM and get some experience in.
Hilltop,I would go along with most of what you have said although I would include Cech in your first group and put Miller, Barnes & Thomas into the second category.
Miller obviously has pace and strength and much time left to develop further but for me his finishing needs alot of improvement and his inability to do even the basics with his right foot will always prevent him from reaching the top level.
I would leave Barnes out of the top category simply because I haven’t seen enough of him and he has been out along time with injuries – he has huge potential but is unproven.
Thomas is an interesting one in that he has undoubtedly been one of our most important players this season but he has come up short previously at the top level and he is a bit of a one trick pony which I think would be exposed at the top level.
I think you make sense with your reasoning, I notice that you havo omitted Mattock although I’m not surprised as he is a real liability until he matures and gets some pace. Zuiverloon clearly has potential but lacks confidence and is also prone to errors which we can’t afford especially in the prem. We don’t have a natural cover at fullback Tamas isn’t up to it Reid may be the best option if we can keep him, It’s extremely nerve wracking with every attack on our defence your constantly on edge hoping that the defence doesn’t screw up or leave Carson exposed, we seem to back off too much and not put pressure on the ball, its obvious that we are much better when we attack and take hold of a game. Unfortunately this happens when we fall behind it feels like we have to score 2 to even think about winning a game. If we can win our next few home games we should be ok for 2nd. Hope that you agree Terry

There`s not much wrong with Albions squad at
the moment so if Roberto Di Matteo got us up
all we`d need would be 2 defenders and a
striker.
I think the main question should be
WILL ROBERTO DI MATTEO CUT IT IN THE PREM?
The bloke seems to be loving life at the Albion and he`s still trying to keep us playing the entertaining football(but has
not been there for a few weeks but will return).DI MATTEO MAY HAVE HIS FAULTS BUT AT
LEAST HE`S GOT A BIT OF CHARISMA ABOUT HIM!.
So please Albion fans get behind him!

I fear for our time in the Prem if we go up this year.
I think that generally, I agree with you but feel that the inconsistant record of the team will not suddenly gel when we hit the big time.
Admittedly there have been times when we have not had all our best players for a number of games but this shows how little real strength in depth we have because results have not happened.
I feel we need to go and get some established Prem players who maybe older and cost us more in wages but will bring the nous we need at the top level.
Hopeful Baggie mentioned some names but I am not aware of their record/skills.
I think Dorrans needs to look at a certain Curtis Davies before he decides to jump ship.
Maybe another season or two with us will help his development. At present he is the big fish in our team. Going somewhere else, he may not do quite as well among other established players.
It will be interesting to see whether Mr.Peace will be willing to spend some decent cash and – go for it – this time or whether he is content for us to yoyo again.
I think this time we will really know what his true plan is.
One other thing.
There is a certain Borja Valero who has not been mentioned and is still our player. Apparently he is performing very well at the moment. Would we want him back?
Hilltop, I started off pretty much agreeing with your picks, but when you really think about it, its a bit scary. Theres only a few that we could say would definitely be good enough – Dorrans, Koren and Morrison probably being the standout ones, but Korens likely to move on and I don’t think Dorrans could resist a top 10 move, so that would leave our midfield very exposed. Forwards, no confidence that any of them would make it. Bednar and Ish would be the most obvious best bets, but neither did that much last time, and both miss loads of games with injuries. Brunt, Mulumbu, Watson, Olssen likely to be good enough, maybe Tamas, then what? Carson wasn’t good enough for Villa or L’pool, and for us has always been match saving then match costing. So a fair few to sort out imo.But lets get there first.

Olsson (When he wants to, if he doesnt leave)
Morrison (if he is still with us)
Dorrans (if he is still with us)
Carson should be loaned to Shrewsbury where at that level his constant mistakes may not get punished as much.

I cannot believe that Hilltop has put Scott Carson on his list, he has lost all credibility in my book now.

IF we do go up, I would like to see Valero fit into a 5 man midfield with Dorrans along side him and Mulumbu or Jara protecting the back four. I think Thomas, Barnes and Morrison are capable wingers! So i am not too worried about our midfield.
I think a fully fit Bednar and Miller will be decent attacking options, but we need atleast 2 more strikers i think, Cox and Wood have the potential to be quality strikers, but I would not like to rely on them in a relegation battle.
Defence worries me, we desperately need cover for Tamas and Olsson, and our current full backs I hope will be sold on to Halesowen Town (if they will have them that is) so cover for Cech, and a new right back is a must!
Add 2 strikers and 2/3 defenders with the same quality as our midfield and we’d be challenging for Europe next season. But I can’t see use getting them…

Hilltop.
First of all sincere best wishes to Jarrod.
An interesting idea for a blog, even if being superstitious I’m not sure if we should be delving into it.
Like most, except for the Shadrags, I more or less agree with your picks. The trouble is like you and most Baggies, I find it hard to be objective. Some are too optimistic, some are too harsh and some will never give credit to their hate figures or admit their favourites ever make a mistake.
I noticed Alan Irvine was the latest in a long line of opposition managers to praise the quality of our squad and perhaps that is the best unbiased as well as knowledgable assessment.
The PL isn’t the same quality that it was last time we were there and that time it wasn’t as good as the first time we went up. Look at the Man Ure team that lined up against Wolves compared to the one that beat us last year. Look at Burnley’s squad and they’re still in the mix to stay up.
Before people start having a go at RDM’s inexperience let’s also remember that he came in late and was unable to make too many changes to the squad. The Jan window isn’t much use to clubs in our position, that don’t know which division we’ll be in next season. I’m sure if we go up it will be with a much stronger squad this time
There seem to be people on here who are more keen to sell Graham Dorrans than the E&S are, he hasn’t said he wants to go anywhere yet and he’s on a long contract. The Scott Carson knockers in our midst are worse than the vultures in the media that magnify his every mistake while ignoring the good saves. Slory may or may not be a good player, how can you make a decision on a couple of appearances when he hasn’t been fully match fit? Likewise Chris Wood, the lad’s barely eighteen, let’s cast him aside because he isn’t as good as Wayne Rooney at that age.
I remember Zoovy having a good game when he filled in at CH at Boro last year, perhaps a change of position might do him good.
I didn’t mean to go on like this, so it shows how good the blog was.

Thanks for your contributions lads. I did todays blog just to lighten the mood a little and by no means do i think the job is done !!!! just a pick a few points up. I think one of our main problems has been that we have gone up 3 times, 2 times with premiership virgins in charge (Megson and Mowbray) and the third, Robson. If we go up this time we have another virgin. I do believe there is a vast difference in managing at the top level, but i do believe that Di Matteo’s experience at the very highest level will give him a head start. However it can be done Phil Brown, Tony Pulis and Owen Coyle spring top mind. Borja Valero is a mystery, i’m aware of how good a season he is having, and i know he is still our player, but im struggling to get my head around him making it in the premiership. Zuivy is most certainly good enough when he’s on his game, but at present that looks like being 5 out of 38 games, thers no consistancy to his game. Scott Carson is a good keeper and has been responsible for some great saves this season, but i dont think he has ever got ovwer the Croatia game, in time i think he will be at the very top of the game, he is still very young for a keeper, but i did say we needed someone to push him for his place.
As to whether we have a better squad than any other team, i believe that there are some very average teams in the lower reaches of the prem at the moment and as a team i believe we have as good a first eleven (with some additions) as at least 5-6 teams in the prem. anyway thats football we all have opinions and they all count !!! See you all tommorrow and lets get another three points by getting right behind the lads.

okay first thing in my book is that we need GOOD players comming in with quite abit of EXPERIENCE in a top league of what ever country is available, players that are not going to be pushed about, velero comes to mind, zuiverloon, meite,to be honest i dont want to see them again next season, they have cost us so many points with co co the clown defending, that really hurt us as a club, silly points lost and cup games,so i would like one or two PROFESIONALS comming in,some of the defending ive seen is sunday football at best, that was our big mistake last time up in the prem we had no EXPERIENCE, stoke hull and birmingham did.

Will everyone get off Carsons back , he is nowhere near as bad as some of you make out.He is young and will gain experiance as he goes along. Really people get a grip you just highlight his mistakes and never mention the good things he does. I am sick of listening to people at the match on his back do you really think this helps him???
agree with your assessment would like to see 4-5 prem/quality experience rather than a dozen much of a muchness type cc player.and the majority of money spent on the best striker that we could possibly afford
Report abuse
The stick Carson is getting on here is outrageous.
If were talking about players with real prem quality then with the exception of dorrans (bearing in mind we are all presuming he is ready to make the step up!!), Carson probably heads up our list of prem quality players.
His mistakes are more costly because he is a goalkeeper, thats the nature of being a keeper!! 9 times out of 10 though he is consistent and reliable. I always knock my villa mates for their fickle nature, lets not become another club full of fans who change their opinions on the back of occassional mistakes (such as those Carson made at QPR)! In real terms, how many MATCHES has Carson cost us!?
The real area we are lacking is up top. None of our forwards can cut it at the top level – FACT. Miller and Cox have the potential to but they need some top quality coaching and a strike partner capable of banging in 20 a season to ease the pressure on them! Obviously we are not going to buy a 20 goal a year, in the prem, striker. My suggestion would be to keep buying young and cheap until we unearth a striking gem – after all this minimises the risk and youngsters generally have more confidence and less to loose.
Ill end the rant by saying out midfield is fine
Report abuse
Is this the 5 Minute Argument or the Full Half-hour? First: Our virgin manager has us in the top two at present. What the Hell else would please some of you? If we were trying to make the play-off positions then the odd complaint might be justified. Second: The size of squad was trimmed this year with new limits placed on it for economy reasons. Many clubs are looking at bank managers with very sheepish expressions, even Man.U. As such, there will be a glut of players looking for new clubs this coming season and wages trimmed to suit the economic climate. A few more won’t take risks for peanut salaries, (pause for ironic laughter), so let’s hope we don’t buy those ones.
A damn good blog Hilltop. Whatever it is that concerns Bomber and Laura, be sure we all feel for them. Even football ain’t THAT important.
A team is more than the sum total of its components… look at Burnley, Hull, Wigan – how many obvious prem quality players do they have ???
They have certain star players and the rest are good players – its the managers who organise and develop the teams to play well.
People say our current squad isn’t as good as the one TM took up – but I think RDM could get this bunch to beat the last lot by better defending and work rate.
We need to keep our star players and we need more experience if we go up – but I wouldn’t start binning too many of the current crop yet cos they might just suprise us.

AFTER TODAYS RESULT ,IT WAS A MASSIVE 3 POINTS WITH THE RESULTS AT THE OTHER GAMES,WE SHOULD BE THERE ABOUTS AS FOR THE PUSH FOR THE PREM REALY DONT THINK CARSON IS THE BEST FOR THE TOP GOOD No2 WE HAVE SOME PLAYERS THAT WILL CUT IT IN THE PREM..THOSE IN MY OPINION WHO WILL LIGHT UP THE PREM DORRANS,JARRA,TOMATZ,REID,BARNS ,OLSEN,MULUMBU,COX BEDNER MAYBE MILLER,.IN THE SUMMER ID TRY AND BRING IN JAMES OR GREEN,AS KEEPER,BULLARD,JASON ROBERTS,FULLER,HELGASON,MAKE OLSEN CAPTIAN JUST FRESHEN THE SQUAD DONT NEED MANY PLAYERS IN THAT SHOULD BE GOOD ENOUGH TO KEEP US IN THERE IF THE LIKES OF THE DINGLES STOKE BIRMINGHAM CAN STAY UP WITH CRAP PLAYERS THEN WE CAN DO IT THIS TIME WITH THE QUALITY WE HAVE NOW NEVER MIND MY SUMMER WISH LIST
