McCarthy ponders recall for Iwelumo
Wednesday 10th March 2010, 11:00AM GMT.
Wolves could be ready to recall Chris Iwelumo after he scored a stunning winner for Bristol City last night.
Boss Mick McCarthy was at Selhurst Park to watch the Scotland international score the all-important strike 17 minutes from time to beat Crystal Palace 1-0.
Iwelumo’s second goal in six games for the Robins comes before the last game of his loan spell at Ashton Gate at Reading on Saturday.
The 1-0 victory meant Iwelumo has helped City to eight points in his short spell in the west country, moving the Robins to halfway in the Championship table and eight points clear of the relegation zone.
McCarthy is desperate for firepower with Wolves the lowest scorers in the Premier League and his team having failed to score in 13 games this season.
City boss Gary Johnson is desperate to keep Iwelumo but admits he has improved with games since his arrival at Ashton Gate.
“What Mick will know, of course, is we’re giving Chris regular games, and he’s improving because of that,” he said.
And that could tempt McCarthy to bring the 6ft 3ins target man back to Molineux for the run-in.
But the Molineux chief is likely to leave an announcement on his final decision until after the weekend.
He said: “I haven’t decided yet – I’ve sent him out to get some games.
“It might be that we let him stay, it might be that we bring him back.”
Johnson admitted: “I love big Chris to bits and I’d love for him to stay.
“He told me Mick was here to see him, and I’ll be having a chat with him later in the week.
“Wolves know how we feel, but the situation is out of our hands.”
