Albion fans angry over match switch
Wednesday 10th March 2010, 11:31AM GMT.
Disgruntled Baggies fans who have booked a weekend away for the last match of the season have been disappointed after it was switched to a week night.
Supporters planning a big weekend in London for the clash against Crystal Palace said they are gutted the game had been swapped from 3pm on a Saturday to 7.45pm on a Monday.
Baggies fans traditionally hold a big party on the last away match of the season but their plans have now been dampened by the Monday night fixture.
It was announced at the start of the week that the April 24 away match against Crystal Palace had been pushed back until April 26 for live screening on Sky Sports.
Since then, fans have been posting disappointed messages on the Express & Star’s website.
One fan, called Big Dave, posted: “Is anyone as fed up as me that the last away match of the season has been moved to a Monday night?
“There are 50 of us booked on a coach, digs paid for, weekend away arranged.
Another supporter Sir Terry Baggie added: “It’s an utter disgrace last away [game] moved especially for us as it’s our beach party. Was looking forward to a weekend in the smoke.”
West Bromwich Albion today said it had no choice but to adhere to the television schedule.
Albion spokesman John Simpson said: “The club fully sympathises with supporters who had already made travel arrangements for the game at Crystal Palace before it was rescheduled.
“However, under the present broadcasting agreement, we have no choice but to accommodate TV requests for change of fixtures, unless there is a policing issue to prevent such a move.
“This is the reason why the fixture list on our website and in our matchday programme states ‘fixtures are subject to change’.
“There is nothing the club could have done to have prevented this change or provide more advanced notice.”
Some of the fans are now considering moving the big away game party forward to the Doncaster match at Keepmoat Stadium on April 10.
In the past, fans at the last away match of the season have donned Hawaiian shirts and masks of former manager Tony Mowbray.
The last match of the season will be played at The Hawthorns on May 2 against Barnsley.
