Vokes making no excuses for miss

Shellshocked Wolves striker Sam Vokes has vowed to score from his next chance to help put his costly miss behind him after admitting – “There are no excuses.”

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United will unfortunately be remembered for Vokes blazing over unmarked from six yards, with only goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar to beat to deny his team a point in injury-time.

Vokes, who was too distraught to talk after the game, has now broken his silence to speak of his determination to put the nightmare behind him.

He said: “I’ve just got to make sure I stick the next chance away when it comes along. I’m not going to make any excuses. The ball did come through a few people quite quickly and I just tried to put it in.

“If it goes in you’re the hero and if it doesn’t, you’re not. As a striker those are the sort of chances you want and I’d back myself to score them.”

The Wales international was relieved to train yesterday, after a miserable weekend surrounded by his family trying to console him.

He said: “I don’t think I was a good person to be about on Saturday night – the family were upset and I don’t think my missus was too happy. I’ve been thinking about it all weekend but I’m now trying to get it out of my head.

“It was great to get back in yesterday and train again just to start to get it out of my system. I can’t afford to dwell on it and I’m just looking ahead to the next 10 games.

“I’m due a goal now so hopefully it will come soon.”

Vokes revealed boss Mick McCarthy and the players are helping him get over his frustration.

He said: “The gaffer and the other lads have been really supportive. The gaffer pulled me after the game and told me I could be the one who gets the goal to keep us in the Premier League.”

Vokes is disappointed his miss has overshadowed a pleasing period for him after looking sharper following his return from a loan spell at Leeds.

He said: “Training has been great and it’s been nice to be involved with being on the bench.”

    Wolves AY I

Lets forget it, move on. He aint the first one to miss like that. Least it was one point lost instead of two!

Lets just hope it is the last poor miss of the season.
