Di Matteo urges Carson to rebound

Albion head coach Roberto Di Matteo has urged captain Scott Carson to emulate his footballing hero by bouncing back from his QPR nightmare.

Di Matteo believes Carson can be inspired by Italian great Gianluigi Buffon, who the Baggies goalkeeper admired as a youngster.

The Hawthorns head coach played alongside Buffon for Italy and believes his No 1 should take heart from the 32-year-old’s reaction to some bad days in his early career.

Carson is back in action against Sheffield Wednesday at the Hawthorns tonight, three days after his costly errors against QPR at Loftus Road.

And Di Matteo said: “I am confident he will respond well. As a goalkeeper you get exposed, because if you make a mistake most of the time it’s a goal. But I think he’s saved us many points this season and there are 10 other players who could have helped him win the game.

“Strikers can miss goals, defenders can make mistakes. He’s part of our team, part of our squad. He is a top professional. I remember when Buffon had a bit of a dodgy time and he was one of the best goalkeepers in the world at the time.

“It happens. You can have a bad game and as a keeper you are exposed.

“Scott is not green behind the ears and he just has to react, get over it and put it right and mentally strong for the next game.”

Carson has been the subject of constant criticism from a section of the Baggies’ support this season.

His mistakes in the 3-1 defeat to Rangers will ensure the spotlight is on him again tonight in the game against Wednesday, where he spent time on loan as a teenager.

But Di Matteo does not believe comments from the stands have affected his skipper.

He said: “Scott has not made any comments. We have to be strong mentally and physically to get through the last 12 games. We have had some ups and I have to say our supporters in our last home game against Derby were magnificent.

“It was one of the best performances by the supporters and I think that helped the team a lot.”
