Wolves 0 Manchester United 1

Saturday 6th March 2010, 7:05PM GMT.

Wolves 0 Manchester United 1

Wolves were again made to rue golden chances missed and a mistake as Paul Scholes’ goal made it four defeats in five for Mick McCarthy’s men at Molineux.

Scholes notched his 100th Premier League goal 17 minutes from time, after Jody Craddock’s clearance hit him to coolly slot home from seven yards out.

The home side were left to rue the unmarked Stephen Ward heading straight at goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar from six yards in the 36th minute from Matt Jarvis’s cross.

Substitute Sam Vokes also blazed over from six yards from Andy Keogh’s cross in the second minute of stoppage time, before heading narrowly wide as Wolves attempted to throw everything into it at the death.

United, who didn’t include Wayne Rooney in their 18 despite him travelling, were second best in the first-half as Wolves gradually grew in confidence.

In a fairly tepid opening period,  it was Mick McCarthy’s men who created the first chance after six minutes.

It was a rare chance for tireless striker Kevin Doyle, who was disappointed to drag a weak left foot effort wide after exchanging passes with Jarvis.

United threatened through former Wolves loan midfielder Darron Gibson, who poked just wide when off balance after the defence had failed to clear Antonio Valencia’s free kick.

But the hosts, who were angered when Nani escaped a booking for catching his studs in Ronald Zubar’s face, created the best two openings of the half within four minutes of each other.

Ex-United reserve David Jones’s first-time shot flew straight at Van der Sar on 32 minutes to cap an excellent move started by Doyle on the edge of his own penalty area, which continued with a 40-yard surge upfield before spreading play to Jarvis for a cross.

Then came Ward’s chance, where you were left to wonder whether Wolves would get a better opportunity.

United, who replaced Wes Brown with Gary Neville at half-time, improved after the break and Dimitar Berbatov had two efforts blocked by Jody Craddock and Christophe Berra, before goalkeeperMarcus Hahnemann denied Patrice Evra’s toe-poked shot.

The game then started to open up as United switched from 4-5-1 to 4-4-2 with the introduction of Mame Briam Diouf for Gibson.

With more space, Wolves grew in confidence in their pursuit of a breakthrough.

Kevin Foley miskicked from a scoring position after a high speed run and cross from Jarvis, before the flow of the game was slightly disrupted by bookings to Nemanja Vidic, Craddock and Jones.

But unfortunately for Wolves, the crucial onechance went to United and Scholes, who needed no second invitation.

There was no way back, despite the late drama to make next Saturday’s trip to Burnley a real cliffhanger.

A brave attempt, but if you don’t score goals you can’t win.

We have now scored less goals than anyone else in the Premiership, and as a result we are doomed to go down.

Just relax and enjoy the last games of the Premiership season.

Unfortunately we have scored less goals than any team in the football league with the exception of Darlington and have now failed to score in 16 of the 28 matches we have played in the premier . We are also now in danger of burning out our best player by expecting him to do everything without reasonable support and we have a manager who is telling us that Doyle WILL go if we get relegated . There is only one person who should go and we will have to wait and see if that happens . We will , however , continue to support our side whatever the outcome at the end of the season let us just hope for a miracle .

Mick to go and take Ward with him. All our goals against have come from Wards left side position. We ended with our side plus championship players [except our right back]from last season. Micks buys have all failed except Doyle. You get what you pay for, Moxey and Mick please note! No quality from midfield and no goals. But the big regret is the failure of Blake who should be redfaced when he gets paid each month.

With an election looming I keep thinking that Morgan is a Brown supporter and does not want to add to the unemployment figures, so like all the other cuts around the corner we will have to wait until after the election.

An excellent performance by the team and an entertaing game, we were let down again by a poor clearance, the Manager again not taking the opportunity to change to an attacking side 60-65 min when the game was in our grasp. What is the point of putting 3 attacking players on after 80 mins, taking off two of our best players. leaving Henry on the field. Vokes misses were inexcusable, it is all about taking your chances. If we do not score goals we will not survive.

It’s been said many times and the words still ring true; you get punished for your mistakes in the PL. Man Utd made no mistakes and when they had the chance they took it; Wolves on the other hand, despite all their effort, failed to convert their chances and made one mistake and were clinically punished.
As was said so many times in the commentary, Wolves lacked that final ball, the quality to break through. Doyle was expected to do too much; he dropped into midfield and brought the ball out but had no outlet except for Jarvis on the wing. HE should have been the outlet and one of our 5 midfielders should have been the one bringing the ball forward. His play suggests he has little faith in our Midfield to create chances.
So just like Chelski the week before, Man Utd rested some of their players and never really needed to get out of second gear to secure the victory. They took all three points with minimal effort.
More worrying for Wolves is it looks like Bolton are clawing themselves clear with back to back wins…and then there were SIX
Burnley next week truly is do-or-die!

A valient attempt but one good man up front
(Doyle) although keeping the loss respectable, is still a loss. The greed of the owners not to invest in another striker of quality has let us down.
Business wise they couldn’t care less if we do go down. Parachute money, lower salaries, same gate money and attendance, all add up.
The agenda was and still is that if we stay up all well and good but we can’t risk money doing so incase we are stuck with players on high salaries if we go down. Leave it a season then if we are lucky we may invest on new players. Appears to be the attitude.
We have far too many Championship players out of their depth in this division. Luckily so do a few other clubs, who are all fighting relegation.
MM must be seething about the lack of funds. The truth will out.

Another incredible effort by our boys. some fantastic play in midfield and some kamikaze defending at the back made a draw a distinct possibility.

However, 1 striker who’s having to track back to try and create his own chances from midfield means we are and will remain the lowest scoring team in the division.

An undoubted superhuman effort, but it is and will continue to be undermined by an inability to close in the final third.

I dont think mick knows how to rectify this and i dont think WWFC board is prepared to fork out the cash to bring in the personnel necessary.

Yes, we were well organised; yes we were committed, and as always, honest. But the plain fact is, we carry liitle threat- it’s much too easy for teams to build up a head of steam against us,as we conceed posession too easily; and at this level, when a team spend 5-10 minutes at a time encamped in and around your 18 yard area, the chances are that a goal will come.
We can’t pretend that today was formality, merely a distraction from the real task at hand. Burnley took 3 points off United; we failed to score against them in 3 attempts. We’ve won 1 game in 10, taking 5 points from a possible 30, since Christmas. I’m sure even Mick would conceed the 40 point survival target he set is now way beyond us (entailing 5 wins and a draw from 10 remaining games).
We MUST win next week to retain a realistic interest, and we probably can’t afford to lose any of our remaining home games. A daunting task, indeed.

Just because we have one up front doesn’t mean we are negative. In some of the games towards the start of the season playing 4 4 2, we didn’t score or create any chances. The number of chances we have created, including one of the best goals this season against spurs, has improved with this formation. Are you telling me Mick McCarthy should get the sack because Ward can’t head a ball down and Vokes can’t score from 3 yards? Any body can see we look more solid and better going forward with this formation. Besides I think Doyle prefers playing up front on his own. I don’t think he likes passing the ball unless he really has to. I guess all good strikers have that in them.
As for last night we deserved at least a draw against the champions. Should have got a point in the last few minutes. It was a good performance and entertaining. Looking at the fixtures we need a win next week and then our last three games at home are also winable. I think anything else will be a bonus. Keep the faith. UTW.

      I think that’s a bit harsh.

Vokes will be feeling 10 times as bad as we do today.
Doyle is not a striker at the moment, he’s a striker/winger/defender/midfielder. So playing all those positions on his own makes him a tad ineffective for me.
It’s catch 22 really. If we play 4-4-2 we lose the extra protection in the middle. If we play 4-5-1 we stop the opposition from playing better, but drastically reduce our own chances of scoring.
You certainly can’t accuse Mick of not going for it, towards the end we had 4 strikers on the pitch! I do however agree with an earlier post who said the subs should have been brought on much sooner.
That said I do chant with quite a few others on here who believe if we can carry that kind of performance into the other matches, we will (hopefully) win some. The only worry for me is that we seem to play FAR better against the bigger teams, but when we play the “lesser” teams we don’t play as well.

We deserved a point from today’s game but again we couldn’t take our chances. I think the problem is, that Kevin Doyle is creating chances for his team-mates where the situation needs to be the other way round. When Jarvis and Doyle linked up we looked dangerous but the players’ work produce a chance for another player who couldn’t score, the best example would be Ward’s header in the first half. We need more players in the team that can make things happen so then Doyle can stay more along the front line and be in position for those chances. Milijas is one of those players who can offer the kind of creativity we need in this league, Keogh can offer more movement with football intelligence and should start against Burnley, likewise Sam Vokes who, if he had more match time under his belt, he might of scored but the thing that the media and fans must recognised is that our number 18 got into those positions, so what did Blake do when he came on? Sorry he didn’t do anything.

For all of the good work of Henry, Jones and Guedioura put in, they didn’t offer much in creativity or looked like scoring same thing with Foley, in Championship that would be okay and effective, (strangely Foley was playing up front for a time in the second half) but the standards are far higher in this league – for obvious reasons.

This part of the team is why our defence gets criticised so much, the lack of goals heats up the pressure on the back four and of course we get Paul Scholes getting in and scoring. Mick even said on radio afterwards that our goal return hasn’t been good enough this season. No disrespect but until last season a Mick McCarthy team hasn’t been known for huge amount of goals, at the core of our performances this season we are a workmanlike team, not saying we didn’t play well, we did but throughout season we haven’t produce enough quality in our play.

Some fans, local media and who ever would argue Milijas hasn’t been fit enough. I don’t buy that argument, I think he has played well and then he’s dropped, already if you look back on the season, we wouldn’t of won at Wigan without Milijas’s set pieces, likewise at Tottenham, wouldn’t of came back against Stoke, no win over Bolton and the Serbian scored the first goal against Burnley and that adds up to 13 points which is massive for us and so we need that kind of talent in the side, but hey Mick would say ‘what do you know’ anyone who loves football can see what’s wrong with Wolves, I wouldn’t know how to coach but its clear to me that Doyle is our only hope if he is getting the service rather him supplying the service.

But with that all a side, the players did me and the all of us proud but at the end of the day it’s not good enough for this league, (take not Bolton away here, and other results like Portsmouth at home, not beating Hull, West Ham and Wigan at home because we were playing Man Utd) its exactly what Tommo on Soccer Saturday was saying, in the current side there’s not enough quality so surely Mick must consider the players I have mention (perhaps Mendez-Liang? or too soon?) A fit again Dave Edwards would be good as well.

A case of so near yet so far .We succumbed to a weak goal as usual .Shame our best chances went to Ward ( an ex forward ! )and Vokes who had just come on the pitch .Once again ,Craddock and Berra looked flimsy despite a weakened United attack . Ward’s overall positioning was dreadful throughout and perhaps upsets the centre backs.Let’s see Vokes up front with Doyle please. We can still stay up but things must change – we are too predictable. Once again we concede a dismal goal and miss at the other end.
Has well as DOYLE as played he is not a goalscorer his shooting lacks strength and seems to hardly be on target.
This may sound crazy but what is there to lose by playing SEB instead of doyle and putting doyle elsewhere in the team.
As I beleive it could be just the responsibility that could trigger SEB to score a few as he can finish unlike doyle.
We are at a junction now that we have to gamble as we can stay up we really can.
Its time to be bold and also put WARDS career on hold as he continues to be out of form and I am being kind.

Great effort but lacking any creativity in midfield. Why oh why was SEB brought on in place of Guedioura when Milijas was sitting around on the bench. If I said SEB’s contribution was zero, I would be grossly overstating the case. Can’t blame Sam either he got himself into great positions for two really hot chances. Get him into the team earlier Mr Mcdopey and kick Milijas up the Khyber Pass – I want to see more commitment from him to get into the first team. Can’t blame Ward either – he misses plenty of tackles so what’s wrong with missing plenty of goals: fact is he couldn’t hit an elephant’s ar*e with a barn door.

There is no excuse for that miss. As for SEB what did he do wrong? Did you think he was going to take on the Man u defence single handed and score to goals. Sure, easy to say we deserved to lose, if to not have any weapons at our disposal, unless you get Doyal more support; we are so close to being a survivor this season, and most would have snatched at one above the drop-zone come early May. That said, we gave as good as we got, and lets face it, sadly, young Vokes had an easier shot to make than to miss, so lets hope he can crawl out from that rock he is under this morning, lacem up again and delved the goods. They are managed by Ricky Herbert who also coaches the All Whites who have reached the World Cup finals. Herbert also played for Wolves when they were down in the dumps. Why not give him a try next season as Manager. At least he will play players in their rightful positions. As for Wolves another loss, a glaring miss at the end. Sick of all the excuses. What an absolute disaster this season is.

Man U were porr yesterday. Very poor.

I said around 3 weeks ago that McCarthy would stick to this negative 4-5-1 formation no matter what the results , and how right I was.

First let’s start with Foley. He ran his socks off yesterday. He was all over the pitch. Good yes? No, far from it. It’s great being all effort and putting a ‘shift’ in, but you have to have an end product. Foley can’t pass , cant shoot and has not a clue what to do with the ball when he gets it. Unforgiveable moment of the day yesterday was Foley’s pass back to Hanneman from 20 yards inside the Man U half!!!

Secondly, Henry. What a complete and utter waste of time this player is. I believe he is the biggest problem this team has. We play 4 – 5 – 1 to accomodate Henry so he can play infront of the back 4. This means we are punchless upfront. Henry HAS to be dropped so we can go 4-4-2 for the remainder of the season. Let’s go down fighting. This is just plain embarassing now.

Thirdly tactics. Drop Berra and replace with Zubar, Move Foley to right back. Drop Henry, bring back Milijas on the left of midfield and move Jarvis to his natural right. Finally, give the Hoff a chance up front so we can go 4-4-2. Lets go down fighting !

Just watching the match again taped from ESPN.

One of the comment was,”we must remember this is the goalkeeper & back 4 that played most of the season when Man Utd won the premier league & champions league double”

Now I’m as frustrated as anyone that we arn’t scoring enough goals, but that coment alone tells you that our opposition know a thing or 2 about defending.

For me currently we are in the best form of the season & ys last night we definately deserved something from the game & I am convinced we will be OK if we keep playing as we are,the goals will come, because we are creating the chances & our ball retention is so much better than earlier in the season & as such we arn’t aving to work at the ridiculous levels we were earlier.

Can’t believe some people on here are slagging Karl Henry for his performance last night, yet again he was superb, as was Jones, playing against real quality players in their midfield, what do you want from the lad???

The only realistic change that needs to be made is with Foley, for a more attacking player, we may as well give Keogh a go there next week, for what is a must win game & I think we will win 2-1.

Having a few minutes spare I took Manchester United’s starting 11 and looked them up on Wikipedia. Three of their starting eleven (brown, scholes and gibson) are home grown and free but the transfer fees paid out for the other 8 players added up to 127 million pounds.
I then tried to work out the comparative cost of our own first team and I have a ballpark figure (it’s difficult to be too exact because of Wolves’ way of not disclosing fees) of about 16 million. Five Manchester United players were signed for a fee greater than the total cost of our team (berbatov, Nani, carrick, valencia and ferdinand).
When I think of the uneven nature of this greedy league I am even more proud of the effort and commitment our side displayed. I think many United fans would admit to being fortunate to get all three points last saturday. We were unlucky but luck will change and hopefully for us it will change soon enough for us to save ourselves this season, and
If we do go down I will still be a wolves supporter next season, and I will proud to support a real football club rather than an overhyped Sky driven money making franchise like Man United and their ilk.

Foley is a good player but like you i think he is a total waste of space in that position, not his fault but he has not got a clue in an attacking role!

I too blogged about the formation, its ok playing this way against the BIG teams but he plays it no matter what the game and who the opposition! with the same players AND makes subs at the same time every game! So anyone could stand on the touchline and do the job as it’s the same week in week out. When have you seen MM change a formation to win a game from a losing position in this league?

There were a couple of decent showings from our players today e.g jarvis, guerdeloa (sorry spelling), Doyle ….. but the fact remains we never look like scoring!

The tactics have to change but i fear they wont, and in my opinion we are doomed! makes me sick to the pit of my stomach when this year the prem is so poor with a decent go at it we could have survived comfortably!

the pattern of our season is that weve not taken enough points from the teams around us and have played badly in these games, and played well against those teams above us but got nothing for it. man utd, chelsea, brum, are examples of this.
I’ve come to the conclusion that we were not unlucky yesterday or against Bolton, but we have the worst squad in the prem for shooting and heading on target and scoring goals. We make scoring look impossible.Just look at Vokes and Wards(who used to be a striker) so called efforts!.I dont think you will get any better chances to score than that and we couldnt do it and this put all the good work we did in that game to shame.

The Magic Wanderer – I can see why you are you suckered into believing Karl Henry is a good player. If I knew nothing about football I would probably think the same.

Henry plays as a holding midfielder because our back four is so bad. What Karl Henry does is pick up the ball in front of the back four and then do a sideways or backwards pass.

In this role he does lots of running across the nback and lots of little passes to his teammates.

Okay, so why do so many wolves fans dislike him?

Because, his distribution is so poor for one. He finds a player but thats easy. Anybody could do that. Moving forward with the ball and finding the right player is the tricky part. What I expect of a player is to be able to move forward pick out a pass and then create space so I can get the ball back. Something Henry never or rarely does.

Henry is neither a good ball winner or passer of the ball. Nor does he create space for himself or get forward to support the attack.

Mick needs to sort out the back four, then we wouldnt need a holding player.

Its obvious to most that Zubar ought to be given a chance at centre half and Berra should be dropped too. Put Foley back at right back where he plays well and drop Ward for Mancienne. You then have power and pace at the back.

You can then drop Henry and bring in a creative player like Milijas. Move a natural right winger in the form of Jarvis to the right and bring on a Hoff. At least he’s scored!! Give the bloke a chance!

I agree with what you say about henry going back or sideways to often. That can be said about a’lot of wolves players this season how many times do you see the ball going back to hahnemann. I would much rather keep the ball though than play it forward when a pass isn’t really on. As for dropping henry for a creative player in Milijas. We have Jones and Guediora who are both creative and have both played better than Milijas so far this season. I was surprised when MM dropped Milijas for Jones but Jones has proved him right. I totally agree with what you say about Henry playing as a holding midfielder because our back for isn’t the best. No matter who plays in what position, from the defenders we have at the moment, we would never be that solid in the prem. So a holding midfielder is needed. Henry does a good job at it, so why do so many fans dislike him? I don’t think they do. He’s proved to be better than Olofinjana. where’s he now and he cost us 2.5 mil. Have we got someone who can do it better? let me guess Castillo?
I can’t see ward playing at Burnley after last night. MM constantly tried to get him to close down Valencia sooner and he didn’t. Valencia had all the time in the world to pick a pass every time he got the ball. Foley in for Ward and Keogh on the right. 2-0 to wolves. UTW.

Sitting here watching Everton Demolish Hull(currently 5-1).With 59 conceded already this season I think Hull will join Pompey in going down. That leaves Burnley,Wolves,Wigan, West-ham and Sunderland to fall into the last place.
Fortunately for us Burnley’s away form looks like being their nemesis.
MM will not drop Ward and will not change his ways, irrespective of differential opinions of MM his record in the Premiership makes very poor reading—played 56 won 8 drawn 10 lost 38.Thats 34 points from a possible 168.

Wolves are among six other clubs facing relegation and the sad fact is that Wolves are a better unit than any of the bottom six teams in the Premiership.

Wolves will be one of the teams that will be relegated because we can’t score goals with one forward, who, while he tries hard all day, spends far too much time either complaining to the Ref, or on his ‘arse’ he seems to constantly fall over.

We have little to lose, so next week I would drop Doyle to the bench, and totally change the foremat against Burnley…I would play 4/3/3 with Guediora jarvis Edwards ( if available)Keogh & Volkes , and start Milijas in the side.

I would not have Ebanks in the squad, and drop Craddock or Berra for Milijas

Why not…we have nothing to lose other than to score goals !!!!!!!

Anyone at the game who says Wolves didnt play well is deluded.

We had the better of the first half with certainly the best chance. We should have scored in injury time to get a draw against the Champions.

The only downside to yesterday was the missed chances of which the late one you would have expected your striker to score from as a manager.

Well done on your tactics yesterday Mick, if only we had a striker with an ounce of quality we would not have lost that game. Vokes miss really was a howler and unfortunately we keep playing well and missing the target which is a problem but to blame Micks tactics like some of you are is stupid as we are creating chances and just lack the quality to finish them off.

A striker cannot operate as a lone Wolf, they need support from the midfield.

We are totally disjointed, even SEB can’t score without midfield support, so he is redundant until the team problems are put right, which of course they won’t be with this manager.

If Morgan won’t sack McCarthy then that is it, we are doomed to go down again! A new manager might be able to reshape and shake up enough to give us a new life.

There comes a point when it is futile to talk about our workrate, honest hard work, “work your socks off” etc. The fact is our season will come down to our lack of goalscoring – our record in that regard is appalling.

When we went a goal down was the time to IMMEDIATELY make changes. Milijas and Vokes should have been brought on straight away as there was plenty of time remaining.

Hopefully, Everton will take care of Hull today to give us one more chance to get this sorted out. Our tactics are becoming obvious to everyone we play – MM has to make changes to give the players a mental break, keep our opponents guessing and to try and generate more goals. Gambling that we will stay up based on goal differential is a dangerous game.

We all rave about Doyle been a top striker ( I think he is by far our best player easily ), but look at Burnley next week they have Fletcher who has 11 goals for them. I just hope we play Keogh next week with Doyle as he is going to be run into the ground up front on his own.
Also Ward needs to be dropped any decent manager/scout would say attack down Wolves left as Ward is weak defensively. Not many players get past Zubar because he is solid Ward I am afraid is weak defensively.

Why does MM keepon saying Doyle will be gone if we go down, did Doyle only sign a 1yr contract ? i thought he signedd a 3yr deal. I said before on here that when he was at Reading they got relegated but he didnt leave them he stayed and score about 20 goals before signing for us. So why would he leave us he owes us another season at least, then if we dont come come straight back up then let him go. When Reading were in the Premier League he scored about 13 goals, so if he’s that good why’s he only got 5 goals for us ? was it they had better players ? used a better system ? or just had a better manager ?. Plus whatever happened to ‘ LOYALTY’ in footballers Bully scored for fun but ‘NEVER’ once did he ask to leave or desert a sinking ship, if KD wants to leave like Henry Camara did let him go this club will still survive with him or without him i agree with an earlier comment id give SEB anothe r go and play doyle on the right and Jarvis left in a 4.3.3 which you can easily make into a 4.5.1 systems are just numbers i think actually think SEB is a better goalscorer than KD. but i ive also said many times that Ward stands far to far away from his winger and he got a roasting again last night, but more worrying was his distribution i counted at least 6 times he passed the ball straight to a man utd player i think id give Mancienne who’s a natural defender a go at Left back or put Foley/Stearman there. But its so frustrating as again we played well yet like the Bolton game 1 mistake and its a goal, yet the ohter team make a mistake and we miss the target, if Wolves didnt have bad luck they’d have No luck.I just hope n pray we get a break and for a change play CRAP AND WIN ONE. and finally will the Wolves players stop going on about how they beat Tottenham 5 players have now spoken in the media about its long gone get over it lets hear about wins over Burnley,Villa,WHU,Everton, etc ,im fed up of playing well and losing lets play a few crap games and win 1-0 2-0 2-1 ”Sorry folks” im just having a sxxt day UTW i will still be there next season and the next season until i die whatever league we are in unlike some of these players who kiss the badge mmmmmmm

Being 7 hours ahead of UK and staying up week in week out to watch and hope Wolves score a goal is a serious strain on the marrage (I’m told)!
Like Shanghai Wolves, I too let out premature screams when Wardy got his head on the ball and Vokes had an open goal. It all goes with the screams let out when we hit the woodwork (aluminium?) 3 times against Bolton.
Don’t blame the management. There are few ‘good’ players willing to risk being transfered in to a relegation hotpot during the January window.
And as for chasing that fuzzy haired pillock from Hull with 5 million quid!!!???!!? Full of effort, aggression and little skill. He would fit in quite well then wouldn’t he (Doyle & Jarvis apart).
Stefan Maierhofer was a mistake, so was Geoffrey Mujangi Bia(lightweight).
I like Segundo Castillo, and Adlene Guedioura reminds me of a young Mike Bailey – when he was with Charlton, just before Wolves bought him, tremendous potential.
Just don’t talk to me about Matthew Hill, Greg Halford or Andrew Surman or I WILL go off one one!!
I do like Nenad Milijas, but he is a ‘Luxury’ player and we can’t afford that at present.

What is with all the negativity? The league table doesnt lie, we havent scored enough goals. But, if the season ends like this, we have survived. Hull are awful and Burnley arent much better. Neither side can do anything away from home, and we have a far better goal difference. The lack of goals is frustrating, but we werent going to score half of the 80+ we managed last season.

People need to be realistic. Portsmouth spent massive amounts, overspent way above their budget and won the FA Cup. Now they are in Administration and lucky to have a club. Newcastle paid the price financially making bad mistakes by being relegated. Leeds United spent millions and millions, and look where they ended up. Southampton were an established top flight club at the start of the last decade, and again, they are a debt ridden League One side. Financially we havent spent big money, and that will give us long term stability. If you arent sensible financially, there is a real danger five years down the line you could be in the position Leeds and Southampton are in. As much as people want to criticise him, that will NEVER happen to us whilst Moxey is here.

In the last two home games, Chelsea and Man United have came here, and havent outclassed us as at all. We have created several good chances against both sides, and sadly we couldnt take any of them. At the end of the season, we can look at the top six, and say at home we have outplayed Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool and Spurs. Not an easy thing to do.

We are making things hard for ourselves, but as Wolves fans, would we have it any other way? No. If we do survive, we need a full back, a centre half, and a winger who can cut it at this level. Sadly, the likes of Ward, Jarvis and Foley are not good enough at this level.

I was always told that the best form of defence is attack and let’s face it if you don’t score goals you don’t win its that simple.MM has really got to start changing our formation to a more attacking one having a sole forward is NOT going to win us games look at the game against Bolton we should have really played with two strikers I am sure we would have got all three points. We are quickly running out of games of which to pick up points necessary to get away from the relegation zone but the negative tactics being used by MM is not working how many more times do we the fans have to state this you only have to look at the ladder to see the end result of MM’s negativity. Its do or die time really now this seasons destiny is well and truly in Wolves hands.

With the league as it is this year I see 33 points and a reasonable goal difference as being safe.

We have created far more chances in the last few games than earlier in the season, the problem being that it seems they are falling to the wrong people Ward Vokes Foley etc etc.

Doyle our only performing class striker who I believe would have scored at least one of the sitters against Man Utd, is being forced to hold up the ball, go out to the wings to collect and basically make his own chances.

I dont think it matters who we play now everygame has to be played as if a win is a must, and for that Doyle needs an extra pair of legs up front.

I’ve read all these post on here and in summary I think the only thing we should do for the Burnley game is swap Foley for Ward and put Keogh at right wing. Personally i think it will add the strength we need at the at the back and the ability to hold the ball, run at the defense and get the right crosses in upfront.

The sack mick brigade need to realise he is not gonig anywhere with 10 games left – support your team.

The ‘we’re already relegated’ mongers need to support their team. We might not be scoring but Hull and Burnley are not any better than us. West Ham and Bolton etc are up for debate

So annoyed, very annoyed and angry.
YET again we concede a goal from our left back area…has Valencia been diagnosed with Swine flu maybe thats why Wardy stood 10 yards off him all match OR maybe just maybe Wardy IS NOT a left back and is a complete liability.
Goal after goal after goal we concede either eminates from our left back area or is a direct result of Wards ineptitude (Wigan, Blues, Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool away etc etc etc.) Other managers are playing on this blindingly obvious weak link.
YET, our very own tactical genius cannot see this or worse refuses to see it.
This problem would have been sorted over 12 months ago by any half decent manager and could be (WILL BE, IMO) the single biggest reason that we go down. I believe we would be in the region of 4 – 6 points better off if we’d had signed a reasonable, solid left back.

Mind you, we would/should be at least 10 points better off if Mad Mick didn’t take until February to stumble accross a settled team/formation especially after the favourable early fixtures….instead our out of depth manager ‘experimented’ early on instead of hitting the ground running.

I know many of you will berate these views and say ‘look at the table’ and ‘we’re playing well’….but it annoys me, ANGERS me when we should/could/would be so much better off…imagine how many more points and how higher up the table we’d be if we didn’t have a dipstick in charge.

Milijas can score , has a good shot & good from set pieces corners & free kicks whereas all Foley gives us is he puts a shift in.Our current fortune cannot be just down to bad luck as they say you make your own luck & its ultimately lack of ability . Better players would have scored at Bolton last week & 9/10 players would have converted Vokes chance who I dont blame as he was only on the pitch 2 mins.
Not sure what I would rather the daily/weekly suffering struggling in the Premier League or scoring goals /winning games in the Championship .Look at Pompey if they get to a FA Cup final , lose 9 points & get relegated they will have had a more successful year than Wolves !at least they will have had a day out at FA Cup semi final & wembley.

Put Manicienne or Foley at LB and play either Jones or Milijas in front. Jones would provide better cover against better wingers who seem to have been let to run amok on our frail LB position.

Milijas would be involved less but may create more, either way at least it would open up oppoents back four and create some space for Doyle and one other.

Contrast that with Our Great Club, far too many people in control, in top jobs who are frankly Football SNOBS! living off the efforts and tradition of those long gone hero’s we all loved so much. Poseur’s who have no more connection with supporters and the paying public than they have with Father Christmas. Thats the difference between Us and Stoke.

To everyone on here who are saying that McCarthy is not at fault for our lack of goals are wrong I’m afraid.
This is the same manager who persists with Foley on the right wing and failed to bring in a striker in January when he must have realised by then that Ebanks Blake wasn’t up to it in the Prem.He has also never given Maierhofer a chance who he spent £2 million on.
I am quite sure if we still persist with the 4-5-1 that if we play either Keogh or Milijas in place of fully we will have a much better and increased goal threat as Foley does not have the attacking instincts of Keogh or Milijas.
If McCarthy starts with Foley on the right wing at Burnley he only has himself to blame. We need to attack teams now and score goals. If we don’t score goals we wont stay up and we won’t beat Burnley next week if we are not positive. Over to you McCarthy there can be no excuses at Burnley. We must win!

Great weekend for Wolves, only one goal conceded and Hull shipped 5. Goal differenece will decide who goes down and we are best placed when you look at Burnley or Hull. A 1-0 defaet against the best team in Europe is pretty damn good. Now for Burnley, this is the one we have to win like no other, win it and we as good as safe. Well done lads, keep it up and the rewards will come. 442 for Burnley please.

Bolton, Sunderland and West Ham are all in the mix and they have much better goal averages than us. Also, Portsmouth have a game in hand and and better average AND they may not have to suffer the point deduction. The administrator is saying that it may not happen and if not, then my money is on them finishing above us….2-0 against the Blues !! fantastic result, cup or not.

I think this system 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 suits us. However for it to really work we need something happening down the right. We saw Doyle burst down the middle on a number of occasions only for the move to break down because Jarvis, on the left, was his only passing option. Foley is always back on the half way line. This makes it easier to defend but also, as Jarvis is right footed, he will never take the shot on. Instead he stops, comes inside and the chance has gone. Jarvis has to play on the right and I suggest Ward should play on the left. He is fast, committed and, most of all, an attacking player by trade.

Who else do we have to play the attacking wide left role? Jones? Milijas? No, they’re central midfielders. Keogh? No pace.
Stephen Ward is a left footed forward/winger who was asked to fill in at left back last season and he did OK. He doesn’t know the position – he’s still learning. In the Premiership, he’s been found out.
Oh, and by the way, I’ve hardly missed a home game since 1968 and have been a season ticket holder for over 30 years.

That was gutting saturday, can’t believe we left with nothing!

Feel sorry for Vokes but I have to say as soon as he came on, he had vidic and ferdinand panicking, they struggled to cope with him in the air, I reckon we should start with him and doyle up front against Burnley and attack them, if he gets a chance on Saturday he’ll bury it like he did every time last season!

Hoping that Mick has realised that we need Foley at left back cus Ward is struggling recently and Foley is much better at full back but Zubar is playing excellently.

Think we should go 4-3-3, marcus; zubar, craddock, berra, foley; henry, guedioura, jones; jarvis, vokes, doyle.

    Up the Wolves!

The latest news is that the Great Mox is going to save a few bob next season by not buying any new Nets, he says they are a total waste of money as we never use them. He also agree’s with FIFA that goal line technology is a waste of money as he doubts if we would used it once in ten years. He says he may board up the goal posts to prevent a draft but to be fair to opposing terms he will have a bucket of paint next to the post so that their strikers can dip the ball to leave a imprint on the boards, they’ll have plenty of time to do that.

    Jeeeez, it’s getting serious !!

Watching the game yesterday there was a decision which even now, I just cant understand. We put Vokes on and took off Jarvis. Any reasoning for that because who is going to put the crosses in???

Henry as defence minded as he is totally hopeless going forward. We need players who are offensive but in the same 4-5-1 formation. As much as I like Foley he will not get us goals.

Worst goalsscorers in the league and fans think we are going to stay up. Hmmmm cloud cuckoo land!

10 games left, we need 5 wins END OF!

MICK SORT IT OUT! Stop playing Foley, I dont mind if that Bia played instead at least he is an offensive player.

I am so glad that express and star commenters do not run Wolves football club. I have seen MM improve the squad slowly over the last four years. It is not easy for any team in the prem. We have improved from last season but it may not be enough to keep us up. So be it. Stop expecting miracles and get behind the team. Oh yes, and the last I heard there were only 19 other teams in the prem. The goals scored by the other 72 have no bearing on how good/ bad a team wolves are.

Maltawolf you are a complete cretin – we tried to get Keane – but he wanted to go to Celtic the team he supported has a lad – just like he supported Liverpool! “fans” gobbing off from afar, you can’t see everything going on in a match just by watching TV?
Doyle is a great player make no mistake – but how many times have we seen him getting into the box to even “miss” like vokes, very far and few between, we need a striker who is going to put his head on the line not one who runs around all day,Scholes got his goal because he was in the “box”.
If you can’t say anything constructive don’t bother, but keep watching on the box because they need your money.

These players such as Vokes get paid very well and obviously they will never make the grade. Each week its the same story that we will still stay up – its not going to happen.Three things define the season letting Hennesey start too many games, persevering with Berra and letting too many poor players have a game.

from page 117 of the Mick McCarthy book of tactics……

“During the last 10 minutes of a game I am again in desperate need of a goal, so i’ll take off my quality, forward surging midfielder who actually possesses a shot and leave on my defensive sideways no goal threat all season Captain and push him up a bit.”

I do think the level of negativity here is uncalled for. Wolves played really well , as they have done over the last few games. We had more spirit than Man U and completely disrupted their style in the first half. If we weren’t creating chances, I’d be more sympathetic towards the moaners…but we are , as well as playing exciting football. Also, look at Bolton..no goals for about 550 minutes then they win 2 in a row ..things can turn as quickly as that. If we keep playing well, it WILL happen.

I had been one of those calling for Foley to revert to full back in place of Zubar, but the latter had a cracker against Man U and Nani. What I’d like to see now is a forward/ midfielder replacing Foley……..Keogh or Edwards probably.

Turf ‘em out at Turf Moor!

      Well said 92!

If we can dish out the same against Burnley we WILL create more chances and thus have more chance to score.

Doyle needs to be hovering around the oppositions box, not running back to create his own chances – I think against a weaker defence Jarvis and Gedioura will not only create more for Kevin, but I fancy one of them to nick a goal.

The one thing that could sink us is Micks stubbourness to play his favourites ie Stephen Ward who is probaly the most inefective LB I have seen at the Moll,SEB who needs to go out on loan when he plays its like playing with ten men,Berra who makes mistake after mistake and looks slow and clumsy.
If he played Mancieanne at LB Foley at RB and Zubar as a replacement for Berra we would be more balanced at the back.Play Ward on the left wing and Jarvis on the right and it looks more balanced in attack.

Such gloom and doom…..Wolves will quite clearly stay up because they have 3 poorer teams below them(ok Portmouth are victims of mis-management) and despite the obvious goalscoring deficiences, they’ll pinch the odd goal or two to inch to safety…..I just wish the likes of Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal & Chelsea had been on the wain when the Baggies were in the top division……………

So Mick reckons 12 points will be enough, by my calculations that means at least 2 wins, a minimum of 2 goals then , where the heck from. Come on Mick we need players who can make things happen, ie Miljas,Keogh,Vokes from the start, jetison Ward,Berra, now and play the best players in their best positions and go for wins not safety first lets at least go down with guns blazing……
