QPR 3 Albion 1

Captain Scott Carson had a nightmare afternoon at Loftus Road as Albion nemesis Neil Warnock returned to deliver a jolt to the Baggies’ promotion campaign.

Errors from goalkeeper Carson cost his side two goals as Warnock celebrated his first game in charge of QPR with a win.

The skipper spilled a cross to allow former Albion loanee Jay Simpson to put Rangers ahead on 13 minutes and the visitors’ defence again went missing as Matthew Connolly got a second goal 11 minutes later.

A Chris Brunt header 10 minutes before half-time gave the Baggies hope.

But Carson was beaten by Akos Buzsaky’s 35-yard free-kick midway through the second-half to kill off any hopes of a fightback.

It meant boss Roberto Di Matteo’s gamble of resting star midfielder Graham Dorrans from his starting line-up was not rewarded, as Albion slipped to their second straight away defeat and lost second place to Nottingham Forest.

A miserable afternoon was compounded when striker Simon Cox left on a stretcher in stoppage-time after a mid-air collision with on-loan Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme.

QPR predictably flew from the blocks and former Baggies target Adel Taarabt had already caused some problems down the right when his side went ahead on 13 minutes.

An Albion move broke down in midfield, Taarabt broke down the right and his low cross was fumbled by Carson into the path of Simpson, who finished coolly.

It took just 11 minutes for the second Rangers goal to arrive, as the visitors were caught out of position at the back and the home side cashed in.

A crossfield ball by Alejandro Faurlin found Connolly unmarked in the box who kept his composure to finish past the advancing Carson.

Albion were shell-shocked, but the found their feet gradually and had a couple of chances as half-time approached.

First Ikeme advanced well to dive at James Morrison’s feet after an interception by Brunt.

Then the goalkeeper pulled off a smart diving save to keep out a drive from the edge of the box by former Rangers loanee Ben Watson.

But the shot-stopper could do nothing to stop the Baggies reducing the arrears 10 minutes before the break with an incisive move.

A neat ball by Marek Cech found Cox, who was forced away from goal but managed to tee up Jerome Thomas on the left and his cross was met by a looping far post header from Brunt, leaving Ikeme stranded.

In first-half stoppage time Albion had another chance when Morrison challenged for a ball in the box and it broke for Thomas, but his shot was blocked well by the goal.

The Baggies started the second-half brightly and could have levelled after 10 minutes when Youssouf Mulumbu’s fine ball found Brunt wide on the right, but his cross was fired wide at the near post by Cox.

Albion then had appeals for a penalty turned down when Cox appeared to be dragged over in the box by Kaspars Gorkss.

But Carson went some way to redeeming his first-half error, with a fine save to keep out Damion Stewart’s header from a corner.

Yet the goalkeeper was the villain again moments later, as the Hoops regained their two-goal cushion.

Brunt was penalised for a foul on Taarabt 35 yards from goal as Carson and his defenders failed to deal with Buzsaky’s curling free-kick, which bounced in front of the keeper and looped over him and in off the post.

I listened on Beacon. It sounded every bit as bad as the result indicates. My sympathies are with our travelling fans who paid a small fortune to watch a farce. Has anyone got an update on Simon Cox? It seemed unnecessarily violent on the part of the goalkeeper. Every week some poor sod is getting carried off on a stretcher.

Wether we go up this season or not, one thing is crystal clear, Carson should NOT be in goal OR captain of this club, he is simply NOT GOOD ENOUGH, it doesnt matter who is in front of him, Tamas, Olsson or even an international like Terry he still makes the simple things look so very hard, he may have undoubted tallent between the sticks but he has no nous when it comes to using it.
I have to say the same about Moore too, we all know he was a makeweight in the Davis deal but come on, how many chances can a player expect ?
Please mr Matteo, sell em both and spend the money on a proper keeper, you should get 5M for em both, maybe we can get Scott Loach for that. :)

No.3 Concernedbaggie. Mate, nowhere will you find the goalkeeper mentioned in my post! It’s a team game and the TEAM display was not good enough yesterday. Waking up to play when you are two goals down is bad TEAMWORK. I rarely blame individuals for a loss unless they recklessly give away silly fouls that cost the match. I do have reservations about bringing two-days-ago signings straight into a team, any team, because they can’t be part of the system in that amount of time. One thing you can now be sure of. The boo-boys will slaughter Carson. We won’t even be able to sell him after the lynch mob have finished so the financial geniuses we have commenting on millions gained for a goalkeeper destroyed need to think again.

      Agree with you.
RDM brought Tamas straight into the side and we lost at home.
Surely he should know that you keep a settled team and introduce new players for part of a game when the team is winning.
Leaving the defence as it was when we played Derby would have been the right thing to do as it did quite well – daft easy goal excepted!!
New players need to come in to the club and get settled in and curtains drawn before they are included in a team!!

I’ll defend Carson when I think he’s being harshly judged; goalkeepers make mistakes and rarely can cover them, but yesterday’s errors were extremely poor. He was blamed for two goals by the media, but as someone who was a goalkeeper, albeit at a very low level compared to Carson, I thought his positional play was responsible for all 3 goals.

Vital to get stability back as soon as possible and the requires confidence and familiarity; too many changes have been forced or made in recent weeks. We’re still in there if we can find our passing game again.

I blame the odd team selection of the manager. Forest was the last time we played two holding midfielders and the result then was a 3-1 defeat. Dorrans should have played and I don’t acccept all this he was tired because he played in midweek rubbish! Carson is not good enough and while he does make the odd good save he does not do the basics well enough and he will cost us promotion unless something is done soon. Finally people who have read my posts will know I an not a fan of Luke Moore, however given the Bednar injury
he is the only player we have who can play the lone striker role. Cox does not hold the ball up well enough and even when fully fit Miller does not have the stamina to do it. It was ill judged team selection in my opinion and the manager needs to look at himself. I think it is between us and Forest for second spot and unless RDM learns form this I can see us missing out

        JTH,
I don’y agree with this oh two games a week and they are tired. two games is 180 minutes plus a couple of hours training most days. They are young atheletes and tiredness is just an excuse. My point was the RDM picked the wrong team on Saturday, Dorrans is our best player and should always play when he is fit. In did say I am not a fan of Moore but he is our best option if we play 451 and Bednar is injured. Cox is moore effectiveb playing withn another striker.

        • Warren

This is where the tiredness debate gets distorted, when working men get offended at the idea a well-paid footballer is tired.

Dorrans IS a young athlete and he undoubtedly could’ve ran around for another 90 minutes if called upon.

BUT the point is he’d have been playing against a midfielder who’d played considerably less football than he has in the last week and last 2 months and as games go by he’ll find it increasingly difficult to maintain the same high level of performance.

RDM sees Dorrans every day, and uses statistics of his fitness levels we’ll never see. If RDM thought Dorrans was up to it on Saturday, there’s absolutely no doubt he’d have played him.

He didn’t play, and we’ve got to learn to survive without Graeme Dorrans.

Wakey, If we take 20 minutes to realise we are in a match, then the Premiership is not the best place to be. I still believe the word ‘match’ should mean that for sport. Equal contestants, not the unbalanced, scratching to survive at the bottom, Premiership, so I have tormented views on promotion. The money is necessary to pay wages for players. The club find that money essential for forward planning. The supporters want to go up until they get there and then the canals are full every Saturday.

This was an extremely disappointing result but non unexpected. I cannot understand why RDM made 4 changes to the team that won only 7 days before. Cox for Bednar was forced, the rest were not. If you look back at February when we had a good run, Koren, Mulumbu and Dorrans were key but only Mulumbu figured on Saturday. I think RDM got it wrong and unfortunately, I think he will get is wrong quite a few times before the end of the season. A few weeks ago, tomorrow’s results would have been almost a foregone conclusion, not any more!

No result in this league is a foregone conclusion. Look at Leicester they beat Forest 3-0 and then lose to Wednesday who had been beaten 5 at Reading. This league is all over the place and there will continue to be unexpected results for all the top teams until the season ends. Koren and Mulumbo both played 90 minutes for their countries midweek and surely it’s sensible to include Watson and Morrison who had both had a week’s rest. Looking at the league table it is stupid to start doubting the judgment of RDM . Injuries and suspensions have disrupted the team not RDM.

Billy Davies also knows he is too successful at this level for the good of Forest. Roberto does what he thinks best at the time and he sees the players closely each session. I personally would never change a winning team, nor would I start with players who have just joined us two days before, but that doesn’t make me right. Only different.
