McCarthy’s fears over Doyle
Saturday 6th March 2010, 12:42PM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy fears £6.5million club record signing and star striker Kevin Doyle will become prey for top clubs in the summer.
McCarthy has championed Doyle as Wolves’ version of Manchester United superstar Wayne Rooney for the way Wolves’ stand-out player has led the club’s survival battle, topscoring with six goals in a lone battle up front.
Only this week Doyle’s Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni said he would not be surprised if big clubs expressed an interest in signing him this summer.
And, while admitting relegation would see the 26-year-old sold anyway, the McCarthy is braced for serious interest in his star asset.
“I’ve got one that’s doing it week-in, week-out like that – Doyle is doing every bit as much as Rooney in terms of effort and workrate,” he said.
“He played for 80 minutes in the international on Tuesday night and he’ll be starting today.
“When you’re playing well, it doesn’t bother them.
“If we stay up, we might have a problem holding on to him.
“If we go down, there’s no chance we’ll hold on to him because he will be going.
“But I think we’ll have the first problem – trying to hold on to him having stayed in this league.
“There will be bigger teams who will fancy him, no question.”
McCarthy believes Doyle is good enough to stand comparison with some of the best strikers in the Premier League.
“We’ve seen all the teams and their centre forwards now and I haven’t many better than Doyle,” said the boss.
“I’m not doing a selling job on him because if we stay up, he stays here because we want him at this club.
“I’m not telling managers or scouts anything they don’t know, but he’s been top drawer.
“He’s not in the same bracket as Rooney or Berbatov in terms of his fee, but if he’d been playing for Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal or Liverpool, he wouldn’t be out of place in that company at all.”
Rooney’s participation hangs in the balance over a minor knee injury, but McCarthy expects the England striker to play.
And the Wolves boss admits to being a huge fan of the 29-goal striker.
“In my humble opinion he’s world class, he’s brilliant,” he said.
“He’s the complete player. He’s top draw and I just love his attitude.
“He plays like he’s playing in the school playground.
“He’s matured and has got better and better and he’s red hot at the moment.
“I saw him against West Ham and I was sat in amongst the managers and scouts and I was still applauding him, he was brilliant.
“It was almost like a computer game – he was flicking it up and then smashing it straight to someone on the other side of the pitch.
“I was quite surprised no one else was applauding either!
“I just appreciated watching him play although I’d appreciate not watching him play like that against us.
“He’s just got great energy.
“That goal against Arsenal summed it up – he picked it up on the edge of his box, passed it and ended up sliding it into the bottom corner.
“That epitomised his quality and graft and determination.”

Sorry seems to be the hardest word, so the song goes, but Mick McCarthy had no hesitation in using it after one of the most embarrassing defeats seen at Molineux in many a year, writes Wolve blogger Tim Spiers.

Is Mick trying to flog Doyle off? I’m getting sick to my back teeth of this story every week of how we will struggle to hold on tho him. Show some ambition Mick, think small time and thats what you will be.
Agree entirely. You can only be as ambitious as your ability and Mick is only Championship level.
can you actually read?

exactly, i really dont get mick and some of the things hes said this season, it really baffles me. Doyle has been great for us this season, great but at the end of the day hes only scored 6goals, if we keep playing 4-5-1 then yes he will be robbed off us in the summer.
Spot on Wolfo. 4-5-1=6 goals. If Kevin has any sense he will already be looking around, this time for a club with a top flight manager. Plus, you have to scratch your head at Mick’s comparison to Wayne Rooney. Rooney has twenty something goals this season and Doyle has six. I know Rooney has a way better supporting cast,( and manager) but come on Mick, get real.
Is there anything he could say that you lot wouldn’t have a go at? Doyle is a top class player and we are VERY lucky to have him. He is 28 and at the peak of his career. If a big 4 club came in and offered him 60,000 a week and gave us £10-12 million he’d be off and nobody would blame him (whichever division we were in). It’s reality – do you want a manager who tells it how it is or back to Glen ‘it’s the pitch Hoddle’
Report abuse
Thats what happens when you have a manager that lacks ambition!
Lets face it, Mick is not the brightest spark. The words he uses during interviews make little sense, he first says he will keep making changes to the team as he see’s fit and that he done the right thing (11 changes to the first team) then he says he will not do it again (blatant hypocrosy or what?).
In all he is a boring, lacks ambition and should stick to the Championship.

Hes right though Wolf86. I just hope that if we stay up then Doyley will want to stick with us. That may well attract other big names who wouldnt come in Jan facing the prospect of a relegation battle. If we do go down I think Doyle will have to go elsewhere to further his career.

Fair comment , Rooney is world class . I just wanted a little further knock on that knee midweek !! Not enough to damage his world cup – just to make him miss the Wolves match ! Doyle is superb for us ,though I don’t like the idea of him being ‘touted’ or thoughts of us going down .If Wolves can get in Uniteds faces for a full 90 mins I fancy our chances of getting something from the game .Come on the Wolves and come on the crowd …can’t wait .
And for all the muppets on here, I hope you listened to Trapattoni saying how much he had improved since coming to Wolves.
Off to the game now – all behind the team for 90 minutes! (+ the extra 7 Fergie gets if we are winning (as if!))
What’s his point exactly? “I’m such a great manager coz I signed Doyle”.
Shut up Mick. You and your players should just do the talking on the pitch.
And if we’d have done a Birmingham, there’d be no problem keeping him next season but instead it looks like we’ve done an Albion after all!
I can’t see his logic in a story like this, nothing but 100% focus should be on the game in hand. Talking speculatively about what if we do/don’t go down is ridiculous.
I’ll say one thing, if we do or don’t stay, up we need a better manager than McCarty. I can’t stand the thought of another negative season like this.
I wish they would of come out with this before i renewed my early bird.Lets have some posotive attitude and talk about staying up and building a team around him…….or are we preparing for relegation!!!!!!
we go down doyle goes
we stay up he stays
simple then, stay up we need him, if we go down im expecting us to be a mid table championship side, we will not come straight back

Quotes :-
” He played for 80 minutes in the international on tuesday night and he’ll be starting today .When you are playing well it doesn’t bother them ”
We were in our best spell of the season when we played Man United and at a time that they had some problems . We all know what happened next .
” If we go down there’s no chance we’ll hold on to him because he’ll be going ”
Is this something already agreed when we signed him ? He made no fuss about staying with Reading so is this our manager talking yet again without really thinking ?

TWO great points…MICKO is a muppet.

Nice to know he will be gone if we get relegated. Is this his choice or Moxey wanting to cash in then hoard the money in the bank! I’m sick of football being a business that doesn’t give a toss about anyone except financially interested parties within the boardroom. Maybe a couple more premiership clubs going to the wall might even things up and see the fans gettin a bit more value for their money (I wish)
I wish Mick would stop with his effort and workrate comments. Obviously, there is much more to a player than effort an workrate and the fact that he places so much emphasis on these attributes makes me wonder how he evaluates talent.
Great comment Tim

Another great point…DOYLE did stay with READING there are other ways to pump up a player other than bigging him…What about the other players in the team.
dont worry mick.you wont be manager anyway.

SUPERPOINT…

hopefully mick will be gone by then and we can get a manager in that knows what he is doing mick he is on contract if you dont want him to go then you have the last say you numpty im sick of you now you and jez need to go your doing my head in your the worst manager we hae had for ages bring dave jones back :)

I have no doubt Doyle regrets coming to Wolves, and stay up or relegated, he will be off, as I think Jarvis , Hennersey and Edwards, will blossom elsewhere
They have already wasted a Season at Wolves, and our team do not and will never buy the quality of players Doyle and to some extent Jarvis,Hennersey & Edwards, needs to succeed.
The only plus to Wolves if we are relegated is that even Morgan will be forced to rid us of McCarthy, because if we scrape home, McCarthy will be going nowhere. I don’t think I can stand another Season of this flake.
Stay up or not, I think that the following players have reached their ‘use by date’ and should go.
Hartford
Castello
Ebanks-Blake
Olomolo
Kightly
Hough
Craddock (will be ready to retire)
Wolves, up or down, must get a new Manager next season, give the likes of Volkes and Keogh every opportunity to succeed, look after those remaining, and spend some money on experienced players.

Who in their right mind would want ‘mister miss kick and tread on the ball’ Jarvis or ‘couldn’t trap a bag of cement’ Edwards?
Let me agree with ‘Tom’ number 13…We could do alot worse than bringing back Dave Jones who took Wolves to the Premiership, and was the victim of the previous owners reluctance to spend any real money on players.
He had an excellent understanding with the players, and a good football brain.

Assuming Portsmouth lose the points as they should for Administration, one must assume that they will be relegated, despite their recent good form…who out of the next six will be the two teams to join them in the drop.
I think that we can now discount Bolton who have won their last two and found some form at the right…if Wigan can beat Everton today then they should survive, Sunderland and West Ham are dropping like stones, but I believe they will find the form at the end to remain, which leaves …Wolves, Hull & Burnley. I think that Hunt’s decision not to go to Wolves was the correct decision for Hull and I would expect to see Hull cling on.
The two new comers, Wolves and Burnley will perform the yo-yo trick and be relegated with Portsmouth.
The other newcomer, Birmingham, who have had a very successful season will remain in a healthy position. Why….They spent close to 100 million on new players, and have reaped the rewards
Report abuse
dear mr aussie rules birmingham have spent no where near 100 million on players somewhere near 30 mil would be closer which is still nearly twice as much as us.
but they have been extreemly lucky so far this season in not falling foul to injuries they play the same team every week without fail and its worked and good luck to them sir mick has now realised this and for the third game we have an unchanged side and they are getting better but we are running out of time .i hope he doesnt start tinkering again its one up front and we should stick with it the football is getting better every game and we will start to score goals maybe the timing will be just right and hopefully we will be as lucky as blues to avoid injuries and scrape through BUT next season would need a massive re think and investment
Report abuse
Mr. Doyle could always follow Mr. Bull’s fine example and actually play for Wolverhampton Wanderers because he wants to – as distinct from apeing countless hundreds of disloyal professional footballers who play wheresoever the larger paycheck finds them.
why would he want to stay when he could double his earnings and play european football somewhere else next season? He doesn’t need any more encouragement to leave from the manager though! Nice one Mick…
If we survive (and i think we will by the skin of our teeth), we need to show some real ambition to establish ourselves next season.
I’ve checked the remaining fixtures and i think we are more than capable of winning a few games (Sunderland, Stoke at home and Burnley, Portsmouth away)
My prediction is we will finish 17th in the league with Portsmouth, Burnley and Hull relegated
