Lloydy becomes a Baggie for the day

Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd never thought this would happen – today the gold and black nut writes the Albion equivalent in the spirit of Sport Relief.

Let’s swap blogs, that will be fun. That seemed like a good idea last week when I was inspired by Albion fan and Match of the Day presenter Adrian Chiles donning the old gold and Wolves legend Steve Bull returning the compliment by once again pulling on the stripes.

But then I spoke to Jarrod Hill, resident Baggies blogger, and admitted that I don’t really know much about how the Baggies are faring from the obvious facts and figures.

I know midfielder Graham Dorrans is a bit on the good side and that it’s tight at the top of the league, but past that I haven’t got a Scooby. I think the trouble is that unless your team is playing in the Championship, then you don’t tend to give it much attention.

When Albion were in the Premier League last season, how many of you can honestly say that you cared about what was going on with Wolves in the fizzy-pop league below?

You might think it’s a bit of a kop out, but rather than just copy and paste from forums and cobble together a blog from other people’s comments, I thought I’d give you my own view on the Black Country rivalry.

When the football pools polled 6,000 football fans a couple of years ago to find the fiercest rivalry in English football, I think it surprised many outside the West Midlands that Wolves versus Albion topped the poll.

The way it works round here is that Wolves hate Albion and vice versa, but the Baggies also hate Villa, whereas the claret and blues probably hate Birmingham more.

I also really dislike the Baggies, but only because since I have followed the Wolves you lot always seem to have had the upper hand. Certain Albion memories will stay with me to the grave.

I started watching Wolves in the mid-1980′s but I had to wait until the end of the decade for my first Black Country derby.

It all started promisingly, as the 1989/90 season saw Wolves beat Albion in the league home and away. Then throughout the 1990′s we exchanged blows with both clubs winning five games and sharing seven draws.

But my most vivid memories of Wolves Albion games during the decade are the gormless grin of Wolves striker Iwan Roberts after a hat-trick at the Hawthorns and the running battles between fans outside Molineux as they converged after the final whistle.

These days fans are kept apart by all sorts of fancy Police gazebos and fencing at Molineux, so we are unlikely to see a Royal Rumble in an Asda car park again in my lifetime.

It’s fair to say that in ‘the Noughties’ Wolves were repeatedly mullered by the Albion, I can’t believe that it’s nearly nine years since I tried and failed to last get into the Hawthorns.

Because of the power of Sky TV, the derby game had been moved to a Thursday night. Which bunch of TV executive suits sat down and thought a midweek evening kick off would ever be a good idea?

Anyway, running late, I dumped the car and ran about a mile to the ground with my brother Ryan, only to be told that the Hawthorns’ turnstiles were being closed well before kick off because of the trouble between fans outside the ground.

Gutted, we then had to run back to the car and find a bar to watch the game which finished 1-1 with goals from Colin Cameron for Wolves and Neil Clement for Albion.

So far that is the closest I’ve ever come to stepping into the Hawthorns.  Hopefully when we are both battling for Premier League survival next season, I can have another go.

I’ve tried to blot out the other memories from the last 10 years. I’d love to forget the Tesco bags left in the South bank which led to the pie and a pint debacle, Kevin Phillips with his finger to his mouth, cup defeat, play-off defeat, the agony went on and on.

But it’s back to 2002 for the worst of all memories. I was sitting in my car listening to the radio and the tail end of Albion playing away at Bradford. With head in hands I remember listening with despair as Igor Balis scored an injury time penalty to effectively send the Baggies up at Wolves’ expense.

I couldn’t fathom how Wolves had blown an 11 point lead in the league. As far as the fans at Molineux were concerned in March, we were already promoted and we were cheering for players to give us a wave and it was party season.

Then with eight games to go we capitulated, and with Albion winning seven of the remaining games we could only win two and misery in the play-offs followed. Painful memories which I’m sure Baggies fans will enjoy.

But what hurts more, pipping us to promotion or when we cost you the double in 1954 when you won the FA Cup but finished runners-up in the league to Wolves?

Its odd, but my favourite Albion memory doesn’t involve my beloved Wolves at all. For that gem its back to August 2003 and the Bescot Stadium.  As Wolves were kicking off their ill-fated Premier League campaign a week later, I decided to go to the Bescot Stadium to see Paul Merson make his debut in a Walsall shirt.

I was working for the Saddlers shirt sponsor Banks’s at the time and I seem to recall we had selected Merson for Man of the Match before kick off as it would make good PR for the brand.

But Walsall, inspired by four ex-Wolves players in their ranks, played like Brazil that day in the searing heat and stuffed Albion 4-1, with Merson more than deserving his champagne at the end of the game.

What was even more pleasing was to turn round and see Adrian Chiles’ miserable, forlorn expression at the final whistle. Amazing to think that Albion went up that season and Walsall suffered relegation.

So, unlike Jarrod, I suppose I have copped out with my reminiscing trip down memory lane, rather than how I think Sandwell Town’s season will conclude compared to your Dingle brethren.

Like ourselves you seem to have a reasonable run-in so I would like to think that Wolves will finish 17th and Albion will join us in the Premier League next season.

It would be cracking to see the four West Midlands teams battling it out in the top flight, at least for one season until the evitable happens and most of us get relegated.

Finally, everybody said at the beginning of the season that we wouldn’t do an ‘Albion.’  By that I think they were intimating that Wolves wouldn’t fall into the trap of playing attractive, free-flowing football and have nothing to show for it.  Unfortunately at times I think that is exactly what we have done.

Another striking similarity is that both clubs are run financially very sound, which sometimes means we miss out on players because of wage demands.

Whilst this is highly commendable and we obviously don’t want to be sucked into the same financial vortex that Portsmouth now find themselves in, I’m sure you’ll agree it can be frustrating in equal measures.

Anyway it’s been quite pleasant having a week off writing another tale of woe about Wolves’ lacklustre season.

Enjoy your trip to QPR and make sure you give their new manager Neil Warnock plenty of stick.

Bounce, Bounce or something is it?

Lots of memories there Nathan mainly sad from our point of view. I remember a 5-1 to us many years at the Hawthorns ago when Waggy had John Kaye twisting and turning all night. Is hate the right word to describe our rivalry? Like all Wolfies I cheer if the Baggies have lost as I know they do to us, it’s all part of the fun but I don’t hate them. Any season would be better if we were to play them so while my only real concern is that we stay up I genuinly hope that they come up and we can finally see our derby, the best derby, where it belongs.

I think REW might be comparing to Bomber’s blog, which at least talks about Wolves’ current season in an informed way. But fair enough, you’ve admitted you haven’t seen much of the Albion this year and there’s no reason why you should (although I’d say the Championship gets almost as much coverage as the Premier nowadays, especially since the BBC took it on).

My favourite Albion-Wolves memory, apart from March-April 2002, was the 3-2 win at the Hawthorns, with Darren Bradley’s goal of the decade and Donovan winding them up. If memory serves, Bully pointed to his badge when being subbed and made a gesture saying “we’re going up”….. In the end, it took them ten years and we made it first. Happy days.

Good blog, especially the bits about how we have stuffed the wolves over the last ten years or so.
I think it’s a bit of a generational thing. You ask any Albion fans over 45-50 & most of them will hate the Villa more than the Wolves.
Anyway, although some Baggies would dearly like the Wolves to indeed “Do An Albion” & descend to the F.P.L. in May, some of us don’t mind if you do a West Ham & scrape it on the last day of the season, cause that will mean we have 6 points guaranteed towards 40 for survival next season!

Hi Nathan, nice trip along memory lane.
I seem to have slightly put my head on the block with my Wolves blog, tin hat at the ready.

Ps if you have any other good ideas you might want to run them by someone other than Craig Birch!!!

Re our game tomorrow, i just hope QPR do not benefit from the new broom syndrome.
Our squad is looking stronger as players return from injury.

The right back situation still needs sorting and can i throw a name into the hat, Habib Beye at Villa cannot get a game and is wanting out. We were linked to him a couple of seasons ago??

Let’s be realistic mate. If you do go up and I think you will do now due to the Forest slump, there needs to be a major overhaul of players from your current squad.
The midfield is strong but some of the defence is not up to it. As for goalscorers from the forwards … none of them are Premiership quality.
This means a big spend and as Wolves are finding out, you cannot do it on the cheap!

I hope you do stay up (albeit through other teams’ financial strife) for the derby, and we do need strengthening in some areas, but a bit less of the father-like advice eh? At least until you finally beat us…..

Morning Nathan. Thank you for taking the time and effort for our blog. Like you i would be stuck to write about our sworn arch enemies. Cant explain the feelings, because out of the 90 minutes i get on well with some dingles and work with some too. Inside of the 90 minutes im not sure who takes over, but hate is the right word. I remember you capitulation and had my two young sons with me, who when i turned around were making not very pleasant noises and signals towards the visiting end. I can remember telling them that is quite acceptable, but if i ever heard that type of language outside the ground id clip their ears !!! Cant explain it at all, and as im over 50 it also applies the claret and blue brigade. Anyway im doing a video blog on tuesday, just hoping birchy doesnt expect a shirt of hurt from me !!!

I’m in my sixties now and first went to the Hawthorns in 1953 the season when we lead the league until you pipped us late but we beat Preston to win the cup.The F.A.Cup was treated as the major competition in those days especially as it was an opportunity for players to add to their minimum wages. You have to remember that the Albion and Wolves at that time were the Chelsea and Man U of their day. I remember the Wolves providing the complete half back line and Ronnie Allen and Johnny Nicholls played up front for the England team. There has always been animosity between fans even back then when 50 to 60,000 used to watch the derbies which were generally all ticket and you needed to queue for hours to get one. Both clubs were full of great players and is doubtful due to the present financial structure of footballthat we we will see their like again. What we must hope for is that our rivalry is soon renewed preferably in the Premier League so that we can enjoy the elation that victory brings or endure the absolute despair that defeat brings. Looking at the present squads I think the Albion are likely to maintain their recent superiority.

A decent effort Nathan. What you have proved is that when we hate something or someone, we don’t think about detail. We just do it! Now you were faced with saying why and went on to prove you know nothing about us. Haven’t even been in ‘our ‘ouse t’ave a look rahnd’.
I think we respected each other back in the War and Post War years more than now. Whatever the crowd size, we mingled, there was no alternative. We chatted, swapped fags and sweets, cheered loudly and rotated our ‘rattles’ when we scored and politely clapped when The Wulfies scored. Those rattles were a dreadful noise, a throwback to a gas attack in WW1 and WW2. But nothing and no one could ever remove the respect I had for Bert Williams, Billie Wright, Johnny Hancocks, Jimmy Mullen, etc. When they knocked you down, they picked you up again with a smile. Brilliant players, real men, just as Ray Barlow, Ronnie Allen, Joe Kennedy, etc. were too. The smoke-laden skies, the grey atmosphere, noisy buses and trams, a few cars, heaving masses of people walking to the grounds, fag in the mouth corner, hacking and coughing in a chorus. Hard to visualise in these relatively affluent days.
But we were ‘appy in those days when we ‘ad nuthin’. We lived in’t tiny ‘ouse wit’ ‘ole in’t roof and our neighbours lived in’t corridor. Oops, sorry, I always end up doing ‘The Four Yorkshire Men’ when reminiscing.

I dont hate the Wolves team, in fact i quite like Mcarthy. Its just the mis-placed arrogance of the average wolves fan i can’t take to. We are wolves ect , constent living in the past when in fact they have not done a lot in recent years. Before you say you won the championship last year , as we did the year before but that is not a major achievemnet. However it is an achievement.

No matter how many times we beat them or how well we beat them they have some kind of mis placed superiority complex i don’t understand.

As your man who writes the blog has basically said in recent times we have owned you, and the fact is when we play in the same league we get promoted and you don’t. And when we play you home or away we normally win(two 3-0′s and a 3-2 in 1 season) If you could just accept that in recent times we have been the better team i think we could all get along better.

    Cheers

Firsty if you are a said ‘brummie’, why Wolves? There are three perfectly good clubs between Brum and Wolverhampton. From your comments of how long since you started watching the wolves I can only presume you were a glory hunter and were you to start again today, Manchester would be your team of choice. As for you banging on about the quality of the current Albion squad in relation to the Wolves, I think you’ll find that if we picked the best from both squads we’d still struggle to make the top half of the premiership. The difference being that both clubs are run on a sound financial footing and there is little risk of either club becoming a Leeds, Southampton, Charlton, Palace or Pompey. So enjoy your weekend, I will. I’m off to Loftus Road to tell Warnock what I think of him, let’s hope McCarthy puts a full strength squad out cause I think Rooney may be rested!!!
P.S. The 1-0 win where Bothroyd scored, I was there that day and from what I remember that was of little significance in relation to our other encounters that season ( A Boing Southbank springs to mind)
