Drop fight the driving force for Keogh
Tuesday 2nd March 2010, 11:59AM GMT.
Wolves striker Andy Keogh has revealed the challenge of rejoining the survival bid and repaying boss Mick McCarthy was the driving force in his early return.
The Republic of Ireland forward made a surprise 17-minute appearance in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Bolton, after almost three months out with an ankle injury.
Now Keogh will lead the charge in a hastily arranged friendly at AFC Telford tonight, after their reserve clash at Portsmouth was postponed for a second time with the Havant and Waterlooville pitch waterlogged.
The striker is one of seven first-team players who will be in action at the New Bucks Head, after the home team’s league game was called off due to opponents Farsley Celtic’s financial problems.
And the 23-year-old is determined to do all in his power to keep Wolves up, with Mick McCarthy’s side above the drop zone on goal difference.
He said: “I knew the run-in was going to be very important, so I was doing everything to get back. I’ve worked really hard to do that. Now I’m fit again I just want to do whatever I can to help the team and repay the gaffer’s faith in me.”
While Keogh would normally be joining Kevin Doyle, Kevin Foley and his international team-mates who tackle Brazil at the Emirates, the 23-year-old is just delighted to be back playing.
He said: “I seemed to pick up the pace in training well and was pleased to get on the pitch. If I get a match tonight and then hopefully some more minutes at the weekend, I’ll be closer to where I want to be.
“I just need that bit more ball work and proper game time that will hopefully get me fitter and stronger than before I got injured.”
Wolves have looked more solid and created more chances playing 4-5-1 – a formation Keogh has impressed in before.
He said: “We’ve played it during pre-season when it worked quite well and also up at Wigan when I played the frontman role. I can possibly adapt into different roles and I’m looking forward to trying to get involved soon.”
Keogh is hoping to play a part in denting Manchester United’s treble bid after the champions won the Carling Cup on Sunday.
Tonight’s postponement meant Greg Halford, Andrew Surman, Richard Stearman, George Friend, Segundo Castillo, Sylvan Ebanks Blake and Stefan Maierhofer also missed the chance of some much needed action.

I cant see us getting much from the Man U game so we may as well rest a few key players to save them from injury and give the fringe players a run out …

Never thought i would be saying this 12 months back but here goes…
Welcome Back Andy!!!
Get back into it and get us half a dozen goals and we will stay here!!!
The Future’s Bright, The Future’s Gold and Black.

half a dozen?? i hope that was a tongue in cheek comment!! we are wolves!
Or more likely set up Doyle for half a dozen goals…
Im Really glad to have him back too – he was certainly a handful early in the campaign
Gotta say it still grinds me when i see the teamsheets nearly identical to what they were last year in the champs. Had that been proposed last August there would have been a bloody outcry.
Still no point crying over spilled milk … another massive game ahead.
COME ON YOU WOLVES

stick him in at central mid or at left back…cant do worse than the krab or ward!!!
Idiot !
You cant even spell Crab correctly !
Why are other clubs looking at the crab ?
Because he’s a good player.
All you see is Henry pass back or sideways, you cant see those in front of him offering nothing !
He’s the guy that gets it, and then has to give it. On Saturday only Jones was looking for it and ‘the crab’ had nowhere to go.
To true, he is a good player, kites said he should be in the world cup squad, thats how good he is.
chill out mate it’s not a spelling competition!
He looked like the most comfortable of our players at this level, before he got injured.
Welcome back and get a hair cut, you look like the dog off Jamie and the magic torch Andy

England squad is fed up – NOT HARD UP!!!
Look at the stats on the WWFC website -
The only player to play in all 26 Prem games – Goal assists – NIL
Shots on goal – 7
Passes forwatd – 12
Passes sideways – 198
Passes back – 476
NEED I SAY MORE?
Are you seriously saying that Henry could oust Gerrard, Barry, Lampard, Lennon, Cole etc from the England squad???
You had better write to Fabio and tell him NOT to book a plane to South Africa as we will be coming back on the next one if that is the case!!!
i spelt it with a K in reference to his first name..Karl. yes all i see is him passing sideways and backards..if doyle can control a 50 yard hoof from berra then im sure a 15 yarder from the krab to his feet is no problem…and dont tell me doyle offers no movement either. idiot

Although we need to play our strongest team and battle like hell in the forthcoming games against man utd and arsenal we can pretty much write these off. Anything we take from them are bonus points. When you take these two games out of our run in (with the possible exception of villa away) it’s not a bad run in at all and I fancy us to stay up, taking into account some of the dross around us. Odds are we’ll be in the relegation zone come 5pm on saturday and still in it come 7pm on saturday! Please try to see the bigger picture and keep the faith, whether the 3 M’s deserve that faith or not! My personal opinion is that they most certainly don’t but do we want to see our beloved team in the premiership next season or playing the mighty scunthorpe, doncaster, etc?! UP THE WOLVES.

I se in today’s E&S transfer news that Blackburn & Sunderland are interseted in Henry,
blimey the snow must still be deep there if they need somone to shovel it………..sideways or backwards…….

Who’d have thought he would take to the PL better than Blanks. Although he’s not a natural goal scorer, his work rate buzzing around behind Doyle should help create chances.
Lets have a real go against Man Utd, don’t stand there star struck for the first 30 mins. Keep it tight at the back; this could very easily come down top goal difference.
I see Henry linked with various PL clubs! I’ve never questioned his defensive midfield abilities but unlike Hargreaves or Carrick he seems unable to turn this role into provider. Hargreaves and Carrick can very quickly turn defense into a lethal counter attack where as Henry passes sideways or back 90% of the time.
Ah well, if we do go down maybe it worth cashing in!
Come on Wolves, games like this is why we’re in the PL

the crab as you call him is the worst player ever to wear a wolves shirt and i would pay another club to take him off our hands henry as well

I think you’ll find he’s on about Henry….

I cant understand how Henry is in the team week in week out,let alone been skipper, he is a poor player, and if other clubs want him, please please take HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MM has always saying that no player is safe to play in the first team, so what on earth does he see in him, I can do Henry’s job, by just passing the ball back to the keeper! anyway welcome back Keogh!

katl henrys a mad player hardley ever see him give the ball away one of our most consistent players this season by far some of the challenges he has made has stopped us droppin in bottom 3.

If the 20 mins you played at bolton are anything to go by you might as well stay injured.

I was interested in the comment in this article that says Wolves have looked more solid and created more chances since we started playing 4-5-1. Has the author not noticed we are the lowest scoring team in the league?
We have now played 6 games with 4-5-1 and have won 1 drawn 1 and lost 4. We have scored 5 and conceded 10 in these games.
Will someone please explain to me how this formatoion has benefitted us?
I don’t think that it’s you that needs anything explaining, you seem to have a perfect understanding of the situation. The person who needs to be sat down and have some sort of knowledge imparted is the alleged manager of this unholy mess that it is at the same time our honour and our misery to support. Great post Steve Bull stand.
The clear need is to score goals and despite his fitness and work rate, he won’t deliver! Those welcoming him back aren’t basing their optimism on his abilities – it’s just someone different!
You have to be ruthless as a football manager but there should also be an element of fairness! Keogh trains well and gets on the pitch at Bolton without any match practice – Maierhofer and Castillo can’t buy an appearance. If we go down , the blind loyalty that plays some players regardless of position, fitness or form will be a key factor!

Be realistic.
Doyle must play. So Keogh or Doyle will have to play out of position in Midfield.
Bungle will not play 2 relatively small guys up front.
Both a similar players so either/or.Therefore no contest Doyle.
Keogh despite his good efforts is being set up to be the Fall Guy.
Where is Geoffrey now?
Somewhere over the Rainbow no doubt?
Maybe a midfield of Zippy, Bungle, George and Fred would create more chances with Hartly Hare and Topoff up front.

So what does Keogh offer? Plenty of movement, nuisance value and the occasional telling pass. I thought he was particularly effective early in the season in combo with Edwards and Doyle. The problem is that he did not look happy last season when asked to play right midfield. However, the difference now is that he would be playing with only one striker in front which might give him space to play just behind Doyle in a sort of Robbie Keane position. I would see him as being more dangerous there than Foley has been on the right. However, he’s surely not ready yet for 90 mins.
It also cannot be overemphasised how positive his approach is for the whole team….what we need in these difficult days.
Come on, let’s skin Glazer’s pawnshop boys!
Negative comments aside,
I always thought Keogh was a decent enough (championship) player, Prem? jury’s out but signs are encouraging.
Can he play off Doyle, I think so.
Also what’s the downer on our injured players, I’ve read some outrageous comments re Kightly ala sick note, doesn’t want to play for the club. Hang your heads in shame, you are not true fans, players get injured, they don’t mean to but they just do.
Iff our survival rests on Andy Keogh we might as well say goodnight now.On Saturday when some of the fans were singing Keogh,Keogh I was poorly,I thought they were extracting the urine, but they meant it..How can any football fan seriously think Andy Keogh is going to rescue us,,and its time Mick stopped giving Sylvan chance after chance,,hes not cutting it give one of the other strikers a chance,,whats up with giving Sam Vokes a couple of good runs..
Just imagine that you were anywhere near as good a footballer as Keogh and you played for wolves. You’ve just been out injured for a few months and your first game back, your teams supporters cheer you on to the pitch. You don’t see that as a good thing. Or should we leave the home support to get behind their team and we can sit and talk about how we’re going down. Also what evidence over the last 2 years makes you think that Vokes is better than Blake.
Its not about the last 2 years magic, its about now and our lack of goals. Vokes should be given a chance whereas Blake has failed too often this season. I personally don’t see Keough as the solution but we all have our own opinions
Report abuse
I am a better footballer than Keogh, and the other 10 come to think of it.

Yes,but they can all sing better than you.

I’ve never met a footballer who can play at….

You MUST be in demand, have you signed for a big club yet because with those attributes you are one of a kind.

I’m commenting here, cos’ there is no facility to post on the ‘Stephen Ward Ireland snub’ article.
I cannot believe he is being talked about as a possible international footballer. I couldn’t give a hoot that he is the only Irishman playing at left back in the Prem, he aint good enough.
MM needs to wake up and realise this, Ward invites the attacker on to him instead of closing him down, it often leads to goals/chances for the opposition. Trappatoni aint no mug and that’s why he aint down at the Emirates tonight!! (It really is a no brainer!!)
I agree with you 100% only MM insists he is the best left back, but then he is misguided about Henry and Keogh , how many goals did we score at the start of the season when Keogh played with Doyle!!!!, Henry is the only player MM has not rested is it because he will see how much better we are with out him.
PS Mr MORGAN…Steve COPPELL is ready to come back to management.
Why dont all you whingers & moaners stop. Do you really think it will help the cause? MM did what he could in Jan. Without breaking the bank. Sensible in my eyes. But if the players MM wants are only interested in money then we dont want them. We need to bolster and encourage the lads who do want to play for our famous club. Keep the faith – I know its hard sometimes but whining aint going to do it!

You must be thick or have no ambition.
Mick signed garbage for this season with millions wasted on championship players. But I guess it shows he is a championship manager sadly out of his depth.
Ward isn’t good enough for Wolves never mind the Rep.
Keogh will soon remind us all how limited he is.
I will never keep the faith with Mad Mick, Berra, Ward, Craddock, Foley out of position, Jones.
Now things are getting very stupid! Ward and international football in the same sentance?? Lol whats even funnier is that our manager actually thinks he deserves a call up!! Is he watching the same ward as me and 25,000 others? To even think it is daft enough let alone say it! Also is foley in squad?if so how? I agree he deserves it when at right back but if the ireland reps have been to see him at right wing then i cant see how?? Imo he has been dreadful there! Not his fault, not his position but it just beggers belief that he can be picked for international standard on the back of these performances!
On the karl henry saga, it is infuriating to watch him do so much wrk off the ball and then watch him be so negative on it but imo u take him out the side and most teams would find it even easier to carve through our midfield! I dnt see any other player tht could do his job! Castillo maybe but his heart is not going to be in it now after mick has just dumped in from any sort of 1st team action and not forgetting he is a loanee!
Another point is about how the club is being run, i read that the club are actually operating at a loss recently which i cant really get my head round! I thought we were sitting through this negative footballing drivel because we were doing things on the cheap again with championship standard players (a couple excluded) & paying one of the highest season ticket prices (at full price) so that the club can pocket some cash and then if we go down build again with more money behind us! But were not even doing that! That in my book is worse than anything else thats going on!! I thought we had moxey because he was a financial whizz?? So i ask the question if were making a loss why is he still in a job? ?
Last point and its about early birds, im sick to death of fans saying ive got mine because im a real fan blah blah plus its such a good deal!! Its not a good a deal as mr moxey would have you think because the early bird price is the price we should be paying anyway (in line with other clubs i.e local etc) its just that the price after the early bird is so stupidly high dummies think its a great deal! Where in actual fact the season ticket in summer should be nicknamed the total ripoff!! I for one will not be renewing after 15yrs home and away because after all the false promises this season i cant stomach being taken for a mug again! Because if moxey n mick are still in charge nxt season (whatever league) what exactly is going to change? ? Answers on the back of a stamp!!

Crowfish, I think Steve Morgan deposited his £30m in 2007.And in the two full seasons since then we have lost about £10 million in total. This loss has occurred due to paying for all the signings up to last close season.Signing players like Berra,Jones,SEB,Foley and Edwards etc. This will have reduced the £30M to approx £22M if we include interest earned on the balance that is in a bank somewhere. This season we should get I guess an extra £40M AND I reckon we must be on course for at least a profit of £8M.So come the end of the season we will probably be back with a cash balance of £30M. If we go down we will be due two years parachute money of a total I think of another £26M.If we stay up we will be on course for more £40M each season, because world wide television rights are set to increase by about a third. All in all it is pretty big money for a tenner. It should be said Steve Morgan has promised to not take any money out of the club.PS I agree with you about Karl Henry

Thanks for the maths lesson mate, that tells me eh? just one thing then, my question still stands WHAT IS THE POINT OF MOXEY? as arnt every other side apparantly in debt in kind of the same boat? in debt but with a load of assests? (players)!!!
Take away Morgans 30mill investment and were operating at a huge loss, not to mention hayward writing off 40mills worth of debt! so without these 2 people where does moxey hide that in actual fact he is not doing such a great job after all!!
yet we have to watch championship standard players which in my opinion is backwards, say we spent 10 million on 6-7 players SURMAN, HALFORD and the likes which is a total waste of money because how do we now re-coup that money? no one will take them off our hands now, let alone at the price we paid! so isnt it better to pay the money out for 2 decent players that will hold there value or increase it and improve our side! for me its a no brainer!!

Crowfish, Agree totally about the two quality players.I think all Wolves fans agree with this.If they are being honest even the happy clappers.

It’s an operating loss and doesn’t take assets into account. Compared to the majority of Clubs you doing just fine, baby.

Steve Ward has been overlooked for the Republic’s game against Brazil, he has been left out for an ex baggie who cant get a shirt for Hull and a young buck who is Man Ciy’s 4th choice.
Shock horror, hello wake up and smell the coffee, watch yourself back on Football first kid, you are one of Micks untouchables – Its because you are rubbish and the only bloke who thinks you are any good thinks Foley can play right midfield, Henry is a Captain Geoffrey looks a player and Keogh can save our season, enuff said….
I’ve just heard the reserves, who include the likes of Stearman, Halford,Ebanks Blake and Keogh are losing 1-0 to AFC Telford! Shocking stuff! We can’t even score against non league opposition!
Also on the international players there is one reason that 36 year old Kilbane still gets in the Eire squad ahead of Ward. Ward is not good enough and Trappatoni can see this but clearly McCarthy cant.
It also worries me that Berra cant even get in Scotlands starting eleven despite them being rubbish!
I love Wolves but I have to be honest and say that I have not enjoyed this season one bit. The football we play is rubbish and has no entertainment or excitement and we don’t even seem to set out to win games anymore and have hardly any goalscoring threat.
I want to see a Wolves team making a go of it in the Premiership as so many smaller clubs than us have done so in the past and present not the current boring, negative dross!
If you ever needed proof that MM has not got a clue what he is doing then take a look at our score against the MIGHTY TELFORD tonight.
4 nil down and counting!
Our side containing no less than 8 of HIS Signings half of which were signings in the summer for the PREMIERSHIP!! HALFORD, SURMAN, CASTILLO, JUMANJI (or watever his name is) not to mention the players he deems good enough for prem football also BLAKE, KEOGH, FRIEND, STEARMAN, the exclusion possibly being stears and keogh!
These are the players that should be busting a gut to get into our side yet fail to even compete on the same level as a far inferior side!
Is this because they all know how stubborn the man in charge is and believe no matter how hard they try they won’t get a chance anyway? or is it that they just can’t be bothered? if it is the latter then ….. WHY THE HELL SHOULD WE?
Blake, well a truly spat his dummy out even travelled home from bolton in his own car other than with his team mates…. get over yourself mate you just dont cut the mustard!!
Surman, not given a chance really so you cannot blame his confidence for being low, same with castillo.
Halford, ive already wasted 2 seconds of my time typing his name thats far more than he deserves a complete waste of wages! and fee!
Jumanji bloke, you can tell he wasnt interested from day one let alone good enough so do one mate! brought from youtube?!! laughable!!
We pay these EGO’s wages and what ever level they are playing at should be proud to wear the shirt, but they just don’t give a dam and it makes my blood boil!
Im not having …. oh its only a practice game etc etc it doesn’t mean anything blah blah if you have ever played football you will know if you have a hunger for it you always no matter what the game WANT TO WIN!!
A LACK OF QUALITY CAN NOT BE USED AS AN EXCUSE TONIGHT CAN IT! AS THE PLAYERS ARE CLEARLY OF A BETTER PEDIGREE THAN THOSE OF TELFORD (with respect) SO IN QUESTION IS THERE PASSION AND DESIRE TO PLAY FOR OUR CLUB!!!

4 Nil by Telford!!!!
With results like that I can really see MM and JM policy on competion for places!!!!!!
I think that just goes to prove how frail our ‘Premiership Squad’ is.
Same old story same old comments, but without slagging the lads we have got, who are trying their best within the limitations of the current regime. The simple truth is that the Manager and his superiors DO NOT have the expertise, guile and EXPERIENCE to run an affective Premiership Club.
I’d love to think that we will stay up this year, but that will only be down to the sorry state of this years league. But when the summer comes I think Morgan has got to be ruthless and rid the club of all the deadwood and set us up for the new season with the personnel who can excel and not just barely survive in the Premier!
Crowfish,,spot on but let me explain,,I agree with everything you say,I want to protest and not buy early bird, over the years I bought my tickets (3) match to match by debit card, the extra charge by the club was 1pound twenty five a ticket,so 3-75 a game…This season I could afford a season ticket 5 Hundred and twenty quid in the north bank,,iff I buy early bird before 6-3-10 I can have my same seat for 370 quid, saving me 150quid plus 1-25 credit card every game,,so Crowfish my protest is out the window,I will buy my early bird most probably for Championship football today..
I know exactly what your saying mate and i totally agree with you that buying the early bird makes complete sense, the problem iv’e got is that the fools walking around spouting that they have got a great deal etc when in actual fact it is only a great deal because the standard way to buy season tickets is a complete RIP OFF for the standard of player and football we get to watch! some fans can’t afford to fork out this kind of money this time of year so it seems like a punishment to have that sort of increase in the summer (when atleast then there are no matches to attend so atleast you can put the money aside that you would usually spend on matchdays towards the season ticket)
IMO moxey and the likes better be careful because they are losing alot of supporters at the mo, every other fan i speak to seem to have had enough of being taken for mugs again!!

I dont want to hear about moaning and disgruntled fans, fact is teams in our similar situations have given it a real go and succeeded – Stoke and Birmihgham in particular.
