Wolves boss’ warning to Milijas
Monday 1st March 2010, 11:03AM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today warned Nenad Milijas he faces a real battle to win his place back after describing David Jones as one of the team’s best players.
Midfielder Jones was the Man of the Match in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Bolton and has been impressive since coming back into the side for the last five games.
The former Derby playmaker is now poised to face his old club Manchester United for the third time this season on Saturday while big summer signing Milijas failed to get off the bench again at the Reebok Stadium.
“Dave Jones has been one of our best players since he got back and he’s the reason why Nenad Milijas doesn’t get back in,” said McCarthy.
“It’s not because Nenad has done anything wrong, but because Dave has been playing really well and he wants the ball all the time.”
While Milijas was on the sidelines for the fifth League game in a row, Andy Keogh made his first senior appearance since November 21.
Despite only returning to full training on Friday, the Republic of Ireland international came on for the last 17 minutes after an ankle injury – and picked up a booking within seconds of his arrival for a late tackle on former Albion left back Paul Robinson.
McCarthy was delighted to see Keogh back in action.
“It’s good to have Andy back,” he said.“He’s one of the fittest guys at the club and it gives everyone a lift to see him come back. He can play in a number of positions and has got a great deal of energy.”
McCarthy admitted Wolves deserved a point at the Reebok.
“I’m becoming a long playing record to say we played well and should have got something,” he said.
“But yes, I do think we should have had a point. Unfortunately playing well doesn’t always get you points.”
Saturday’s defeat – Wolves 15th of the season and the 15th game they have failed to score in – left McCarthy’s side down a place in fourth bottom and above the drop zone only on goal difference.
