Round peg in the wrong round hole

Albion blogger Jarrod Hill believes head coach Roberto Di Matteo filled the wrong hole in the squad with the acquisition of Ben Watson from Wigan.

Two days have now passed since Wednesday night’s FA Cup game against Reading at the Hawthorns and I am still struggling not to get angry about what I witnessed.

When Reading name came out of the hat as our next opponents in the competition, the worse case scenario was to have to play a replay and for that to go to extra time and for us to lose after that.

Unfortunately the worse case scenario became reality after some truly awful defending. As many of you will know, in recent weeks I have been relaying my fears of our lack of cover in certain positions, namely at right-back.

Gonzalo Jara’s injury has left a hole in our squad due to the amount of positions he could cover but the truth is he was easily our best right-back at the club. Gianni Zuiverloon’s form ever since joining us has been erratic, when he plays well he looks very good, but when he has a poor game it is usually a defining part of the games result.

Wednesday night was no different, as I watched with sheer disbelief his incapacity to deal with a hopeful punt up field with only 30 seconds of the game to go. It was frighteningly bad, and having watched it again yesterday it doesn’t get any more handsome.

On the opposite side of the pitch young Joe Mattock again looked shaky. His performance was by no means as poor as his previous one against Bristol City, but I would not say it was acceptable either.

I must admit my confusion when our management team brought in Ben Watson from Wigan. The lad may be a talented player who can have a positive impact on our season, but the truth is we desperately needed a right-back and Wednesday night we all witnessed the reason why.

In fact, the whole of our defence needs suitable cover. Our former manager Tony Mowbray left our club with plenty of midfielders, due to his penchant for the Borja Valero’s and Robert Koren’s of this world.

But when you look at our first choice back four of Jara, Jonas Olsson, Gabriel Tamas and Marek Cech, the cover for them is Gianni Zuiverloon, Joe Mattock and Abdoulaye Meite.

Simply not enough in either quantity and some would argue quality, so with two loan positions available we signed two midfielders!

I am confused, as in two weeks time we could have midfield options available to us that includes Graham Dorrans, Youssouf Mulumbu, James Morrison, Koren, Andy Slory, Frank Nouble, Chris Brunt, Jerome Thomas and Giles Barnes.

Yet at the moment we have one right-back and two left-backs, one of which is out of form and another who struggles to remain fit. At centre back we have Meite, again a player who caught the eye for all the wrong reasons on Wednesday night.

Head coach Roberto Di Matteo must believe we can win promotion based on our strength in the middle of the park and I hope he is right, because as I view it we have a squad that is imbalanced.

Before I go on to take a look at tomorrow’s match against Derby County I must make one more observation regarding Wednesday’s game. I heard a few fans giving goalkeeper Scott Carson some grief and one or two of them I spoke to.

I have criticised our club captain in the past when his form has been poor and I will praise him when I believe he is playing well. On Wednesday night he made save after save, putting in a very good performance as his form this season has been pretty good.

We have enough problems elsewhere, so maybe too many fans are still judging young Scott based on his inconsistent performances of last season.

Rant over and I would like to apologise to the fan I spoke to on Wednesday night. I appreciate you have your own opinion, but to start singing ‘Deano Deano’ towards Carson simply wound me up and after a frustrating night you needed to be told.

So now we welcome Derby and a team who are typically Jekyll and Hyde like so many in the Championship. RDM’s options are considerably boosted with the availability of Thomas, Cech, new boy Watson and fellow loanee Nouble.

As we get down to the business end of the season results are all that matter and, although Wednesday night’s game had many worrying aspects to it, I am confident with a number of players returning to the first-team fold we can push on and get three points tomorrow.

I just hope we can keep all of our key players fit until the end of the season, I am now of the opinion that it will probably decide our fate. Olsson and Tamas have developed a real understanding and Tamas has become a consistent performer alongside the inspirational Olsson.

Keeping them both fit is essential, as is keeping our most potent attacking players fit. Into that category I would place JT, Bednar and Dorrans. We have seen how much we miss Jerome Thomas during his suspensions, his pace and directness drives teams onto the back foot and creates lots of chances for the team.

So with the cup out of the way it is now time to push on towards gaining promotion, three points will be a good start tomorrow.

Come on you Baggies.

    The Hoff

The last few games have shown up the weakness of our squad in defensive areas. Neither Mattock, Meite or Zuvi are really good enough and when they all play in the same team then we have real problems.
However I still rate the totally unnecessary absence of Thomas as being the key factor. Without him, we don’t have the same counter attacking threat, we don’t look as likely to score goals & as a result our defence is put under much more pressure which highlights the limitations of the above three players. You can get away with having poor defenders if you are so good going forward as to be able to blow teams away.
Regarding Watson, he is a very good player at Championship level who I think will do a good job for us. With Jara out for the season, we have no cover at all for Mulumbu which would have been risky given the type of player that he is i.e. likely to pick up injuries and suspensions due to the way he plays.
I also wonder if Watson could fill in at full back.
Finally, one good point to come out of Wednesday was the performance of Chris Wood. I thought he did a pretty decent job as a replacement for Bednar & would certainly prefer him to take on that role if Bednar is out for a couple of games rather than ask any of the others to do it – Cox is a good player but not in that role, Moore doesn’t serve any purpose in any role & Nouble hasn’t impressed me at all.

Totally agree about Wood. We have plenty of goals from all over the pitch and we just need someone that will hold the ball up and allow others to get forward.

Totally agree with both Hoff and Jarrod. Our defence is a real worry at times and its odd we didn’t use at least one loan there. I would add that at this level you can get away with an average defence most of the time if you are particulary strong in other departments. As we are top scorers and have some excellent midfielders/forwards it proberbly masks our inadequencies at the back – the problem is when our midfield have an off day, the defence gets found out. If we do end up winning promotion we will need a rightback to cover Jara and at least 2 centre halves. We need a left back whatever divison we end up in, we need one right now ideally! Mattock, i’m affraid is out of his depth at this level but i do rate Zuvverloon – just not at right back! Technically a good player, so presumably will get better with experience but i see his future somewhere further up the pitch.

i may have this wrong jarrod but i think watson can cover right back. i was under the impression that’s why we went for him because he can cover centre mid and right full back.

Morning Mate. I thought you spoke to the carson hater quite cicly really, it was Laura i was most concerned about !!! You know that my thoughts are with you regards full backs, and we might make it through this year, but ther is a considerable sum to be spent in the summer if we are not to yo yo yet again. I feel that the first eleven as you would pick them, Carson, jara, tamas olssen cech, dorrans morrisson brunt thomas mulumbu and bednar, show signs of weakness both up front and at full back. i believe there is a god enough engine in the middle to hold our own, but against premiership quality i can see our flanks getting ripped apart. A reality check is required though, we are still well placed and with returning players i believe we will get to the land of greed. Tommorow is going to be a stiff test, and if a motivated Derby turn up we will be put to the sword, however i think that with thomas back and possibly more from mozza i’m backing 2-1 to the albion.

Didn’t Thomas have a one game extension to his 4 game ban. I hope I’m wrong but I think he’s still suspended.
Totally agree with Jarod about the lack of quality cover.
I think we will need considerable improvements over the summer should we get promoted. Mattock Meite and Zuiverloon look at best adequate at Championship level. I’d not fancy our chances in the Premiership if we had to play more than one of them in a back 4. Also agree that Carson is only as good as the defence in front of him allows him to be. A lot of the goals we have conceded this year he hasn’t really any chance with.
On a more positive note I think Ben Watson adds a much needed graft and composure and height in both boxes. As long as we concentrate for 95 minutes Derby are containable. I wonder what price a Giles Barnes coming off the bench to score a winner is…

And time to tell Luke Moore if he doesn’t start to show interest and willing between now and May he will end up at Walsall like his lazy brother Stefan. Both have the talent but it seems neither had the application. Satisfied enough with earning 10k a week for being an extra, rather than the main star they could have been.

Luke Moore was the worst signing ever! Three Million! The Holte end must be laughing at us for that piece of stupidity. Mind you it doesn’t help if you play him out of position on the wing.

Great blog as usual, Jarrod. Why is it that managers and coaches never seem to see what the “average” fan does? We have had our share of stubborn “I`ll do it my way” managers over the years, think Buckley and Meggo and in fact I have to agree somewhat with Megson`s arguments that he would eventually get the sack so he would do so, doing it “his way”. However, returning to my first point. Three years ago we were struggling at centre half yet Mowbray seemed incapable of buying a decent one (Jonas excepted) or coaching the ones we had. Remember Donk? Then last season it was obvious to everyone that the light-weight midfield was inadequate but even after Christmas he would not pick Dorrans or Mulumbu on a regular basis. Now, as you say, we really need a fullback and yet we have signed yet another midfielder having also been in for Koumas. I am sure he will get it right but it seems to take a long time for the penny to drop in many cases.

Interesting comparison with the 32 game mark two years ago. We have conceded 6 goals FEWER this season (34 v 40) whilst scoring 3 goals fewer (63 v 66). We have 60 points now compared with 55 two years ago.

This is worth mentioning as there has definitely been an IMPROVEMENT in defending! Does anyone else recall the complete inability to defend set pieces two years ago? That has largely been resolved.

So yes, defence is in need of improvement, but it is nowhere near as dire as it could be in our championship winning season. Let’s not get too gloomy.

Whoever is picked for Saturday will need to maintain discipline. Savage is well known for his antics of the field and if Lee Hendrey is involved then short of his head spinning round, throwing up and speaking in an unusually low voice he played like a demon when he took part in our 1-4 thrashing by Leicester two years ago. These players will wind us up if they can…I’d bet on at least one or possibly two sending offs on Saturday. If we can stay calm we can win.

Nice, positive Blog. I needed to read something like that as I have been in the doldrums about the Baggies since 3pm last Sunday afternoon.

I think we can crack on now but it seems that every team we play wants to beat us and they get plenty of enjoyment out of it in the process. We’ve just got to face up to the fact that when teams play us it’s like a cup match for them. We’ve just got to rise above that and get on with our own game.

I just hope that RDM gets better with games and age as I do feel that sometimes his tactical nouse can be found wanting on occasions but I appreicate that not every manager can be expected to get everything right all of the time…

Id say Gianni Zuiverloon has the potencial to
be a very good right-back for Albion,in the
Prem he had very good games but the problem
was he also had some poor ones,Iam sure with
the more games he plays and the older he gets
    the consistency will come.
    ALBION TEAM TOMORROW:
    Carson,Zuiverloon,Tamas,Olsson,Cech,

Does anyone have a photo of a ‘young Megson’?
The moment I saw Ben Watson I thought of Meggo as a player. I read somewhere that Brian Clough bought Meggo and after two weeks said he couldn’t trap a bag of cement! He sold him on too I think. The thought of Hendrey and Savage in the opposition team fills me with nausea. I loathe the pair of them, which may appear unfair as I know neither. Wind up merchants use that technique to cover their own deficiencies as players. Pray for a strong ref and a fair one that sends both of them off after 5 minutes.

Fans differ in their opinions of players my
observations are Carson needs to shout at his
defenders (he is capt) he does fumble but this
may be the modern ball Giannis first few games
he looked a star whats gone wrong dosent he listen to the coaches ! Mattock too slow didnt
we spot this before signing needs sprint training happy with Olssen & Tamas Brunt played for Wednesday left wing due a goal or 3
JT sorely missed KP rates Cox RDMs 4-5-1 preference means only one striker needed think
Bedner will miss Sat use Nouble otherwise why
did we loan him? maybe Barnes will come off the bench to win game it happens.

Zuiverloon has not always had this problem to be fair to him, he is normally a good player with a bit of flair. Its only really the 2 cup games against Reading where he has dropped 2 absolute clangers! Maybe its time he admitted he is not actually a defender and he should move to right wing as people have been talkin about.
Meite on the other hand, who was at fault for Reading’s winning goal was nothing new to be honest was it… he seemed to do it nearly every week last season in the premiership.

I thought coming down a level has helped Meite but he obviously has some basic defending and or confidence issues. Why do we have these defenders that cost us games so often. I can genuinley only think of Olsson as a consistent no-nonsense defender at the Albion in the last 3 years! Our recruitment for defenders has seriously got to be looked at…

On Watson I dont know what to make of him, seemed a bit of a consolation for Koumas to me. I take it we are not bringing him in on loan now?? Does any1 know?

This should be the wake up call though, some questions need asking. Bring on Derby and 3 points. U owe us Baggies big time.

Morning all!! It’s been a dissapointing week to say the least, but quite simply if we win today, and Leicester do us a favour against Forest, we’ll be 2nd in the League with a game in hand on 3rd AGAIN!!

Losing bednar for a few matches isn’t going to help the cause, but I’m sure Luke Moore (yes, Luke Moore) can definitely step up to the plate and lead the line on his own if we stick with 5 in midfield.

Mozza’s back, Miller will be back soon, Barnes and Bednar will soon be back fit too.

We have the best team in the League, we just need to keep the faith and get behind the boys.

after wednesday this was most welcome. This was all about grit and determination I did say
Brunt was due a goal or three over the last six or so matches he must have missed the target a good many times however was he about to be taken off for Nouble ?? We all know hes
got a sweet left foot. Forests boss keeps talking down their chances so maybe Toon and us will be ok. The match showed Tamas is not a
rt back so who will play there? I think we all
believe Gianni better employed further forward. Havent we got a rt back in the club ?
