Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Random thoughts on the Saddlers

Walsall blogger Mark Jones has some random thoughts of the state of the club in general in the wake of Yeovil before setting off to Southampton.
Time for some random thoughts, written in the aftermath of Tuesday’s defeat to Yeovil: -
The Players
I can excuse many things, including bad performances on dreadful nights when absolutely nothing goes right, but there is absolutely NO excuse ever for players or management failing to applaud the fans after a match. Hang your heads in shame. A shocking end to a shocking night.
The Game
What happened next?
Walsall are playing badly, there’s no fluency, we’re creating nothing and we’re a goal down when one of our central strikers finds a bit of space in the box and cleverly pulls the ball back for the onrushing Alex Nicholls. Was it: -
A, Alex buries the chance created by Byfield and, although we don’t really deserve it, we’re back in the game. Another bit of quality from Nicholls late in the game sets up a winner for Troy. Three points are in the bag and we’re up to ninth place.
Or B, Alex mishits the shot, returning the ball to Deeney and almost decapitating him in the process. We carry on blundering our way to a dreadful defeat and but still stay ninth.
As you have worked out, it’s the latter. Such is life in mid-table. 14 games to go, the sooner we get to 53 points the better.
The Subs Bench
Now listen carefully and I’ll explain – you have seven of them. You know that, you name them for every game; they sit on the benches with you in the dugout. Then you can choose three of them to go on to the field of play as kind of replacements for any of the first XI you sent out.
This is especially useful when your young, inexperienced side are dead on their feet and misfiring on a quagmire of a pitch during their ninth game in 28 days.
You can do this at any time you don’t need to wait until, say, six minutes from time. Best of all you don’t even need to wait until a player is injured, you can just take anyone off at any time.
Got that boss Chris Hutchings? then why not try it out sometime? Please?
The Goalkeeper
Clayton Ince made a clanger on Tuesday and he cocked up in the win – that’s the win – at Leeds, but also saved us two points at Bristol Rovers two weeks back.
Our ‘appalling’ recent defensive record reads 5 goals conceded in 8 games – which includes a dodgy penalty and the two aforementioned calamities. That suggests to me the defence might not necessarily be the major problem.
Yet some people still call Clayton a clown, they really ought to think before they press the send button.
The Manager
Some people are starting to have a go, me included at times but there’s absolutely no way on earth I’d be calling for the guy’s head. Given the circumstances he has to work under, ninth in the third tier ain’t exactly the worst ever position we’ve been in.
Yes some things could be done better but they could be a lot lot worse, and they have been! Just over 12 months ago we genuinely faced the prospect of having Ian Atkins in charge.
The Pitch
A lot has been said about the state of the Banks’s Stadium pitch and the weather conditions but it was the same for both teams. Brentford boss Andy Scott moaned that we had adapted better to it than his side did on Saturday, but nobody could’ve said that on Tuesday.
If anybody was looking for extenuating circumstances, then for me the fact that it was the ninth game in four weeks had more of an effect, especially given that some have played very little football in the previous few months and some have played very little football at all.
But then again I don’t do post-match press conferences.
The Weather
Why is the weather always flipping atrocious when we play Yeovil? Even when we play them on the opening day of the season, it’s always tipping it down.
The Crowd
A sub-3000 crowd. Yes it’s symbolic but is it really a surprise? This has been coming, the crowds have dropped alarmingly over the last two years because fans are disillusioned.
They are a reflection of years of neglect, and until those who can specifically do something about it, actually start to recognise that they themselves are part of the problem, then nights like Tuesday will keep happening.
The Local Media
I can’t be the only person who is sick of waiting for someone to actually have the bottle to be a proper journalist for once and try and do some proper research into why there is so much disillusionment and negativity. Surely it can’t be that difficult?
The Future
In the last 10 days alone, I’ve spoken to a lot of people about Walsall. I’ve exchanged texts and e-mails, I’ve seen many comments on the message boards, I was at the Focus Group meeting at the club and the Post Focus Group meeting in the pub.
I’ve been to two home games and to Elland Road and back, I was at the Supporters Trust AGM on Wednesday, and the one thing that strikes me is that people do still care. They may not be attending any more, they may not like certain individuals, they may be sick of the rent and the debt, but they still care.
But most importantly I saw the truly wonderful sight of the massive ear to ear grin on my 11 year old’s face as we walked through the Leeds fans back to the car last week, which trumps everything that happened against Yeovil.
Don’t anybody ever tell me this club doesn’t matter.

I imagine that if someone carried out a survey of stay-away fans asking what event would bring them back it wouldn’t be a surprising read- a new chairman would almost certainly come top of the list. Not a different attidtude which, if I’m honest, seems to have happened this year. There’s a number of players on the books now that have more than a couple of months left on their deals, we didn’t sell anyone in January and we brought in Gray (who I can only assume from all the thanks Bonser is getting from CH is on a fairly decent wage). However, the worrying part of my point is that Bonser isn’t likely to leave anytime soon. This leaves us with the question of how long can we sustain a league one status with a league 2 fanbase and (probably) budget? I see worrying times ahead as a result and some fans really aren’t helping.
On a separate note, I’d like to say something about the early-bird season ticket offer. It’s hardly tempting when the only major draw is a free shirt but then you go to the town centre shop to find out what the specifics are and find that the shirts are limited and you can only get your free one if they have the size. They had 2 large shirts. This isn’t going to effect me but I imagine it will some people. “500 free shirts” my arse.

Frankly the excuse of many fans that they would return to Bescot if Jeff left just doesn’t add up – it’s a pathetic excuse. I’m no apologist for Jeff but hey look around at any one of a number of clubs who have had new owners and look at the state they’re in.
This club has enjoyed its most successful years under Bonser (who I accept has a number of faults – PR being a prime one) but just look at the attendances when we were in the Championship. It used to break my heart to turn up for some real quality matches and find the ground half empty and this at a time when we were in the same division as many of our so called ‘bigger’ neighbours. The people of Walsall have never supported this club except when we played Man Utd in the Cup under Jan (suddenly thousands of supporters arrived out of the sugarbeat as if in a Kevin Costner film)proclaiming to be lifelong fans.
The cold facts are there there are no Russian oligarths waiting to invest in Walsall whatever the price and to be honest having gone through the ‘Ramsden’ years which nearly killed the club I don’t want some rich fly by night looking to come in and then leave within months because it wasn’t what he thought he was buying.
The people of Walsall need to get over the ‘Bonser’ factor – be proud that we have a club and get down and support the team.
Unfortunately history shows that this will never happen.

You are right. Quite simply the people of Walsall do not demonstrate the desire for a successful football club. I know of buses that go to every Man Utd home game from Walsall – people who are born and bred in the town, but would rather support the city of Manchester. My next door neighbor of 20 yrs went to the Wolves (only when they were good of course)… the bloke down the street took his kid to the Hawthorne’s every week. Neither had ever lived outside the boundaries of Walsall. Apathy rules unfortunately. And those that do care just want to keep drudging up the same old complaints… Bescot wasn’t built properly – get over it, it’s 20 yrs on, it’s not going to change. Bonser is this, that and the other – we’ve spent more seasons in the 2nd tier with Bonser than in the previous 100+ yrs combined. Rent is killing us… we’d still have to pay a mortgage if we owned it. All said though, Walsall is in MY blood. And it will be whether other folks care or not.

its evident that the reason people are staying away or just given up is the lack of ambition on the football side. In the view of the chairman he has kept the club afloat, maintained division 1 football within sensible budgets and has had recent success with a championship of division 2 and promotions to the championship. On the face of it a laudable record which the supporters should be proud and gates should be boyant. However the cat is well and truely out of the bag with regard to his rental income and its further investment into his pension fund, many supporters are under the impression that that these monies are draining on the budget of the football side. Added to this we have the continual sale of our best players for what seems poor fees or undisclosed fees. This adds to the feeling that finances are being denied to the football side. Thus we have a situation where a large proportion of fans will simply not support the club under the current chairman’s regime. Its an impasse that may continue for several years, but a what long term cost.

Most of what has already been said above covers what seems to be at the root of many of Walsall’s problems. However the fact that people (and I mean Whalley and the chairman) moaned about the money lost- £100,000? -because of the weather and postponed games, why didnt we forsee this and use that type of money to put in under soil heating? The answer is that no one really cares about the pitch as it has never really been any good and the powers that be are allowing it to be used as a carpet for goodness how many UB40 fans to trample on as soon as we have finished our fixtures – how sensible is that?

unfortunately under soil heating costs a little bit more that £100,000 and indeed once the initial installation has proceeded the running cost of under soil heating can cost upto £10,000 a week to keep it maintained.
