Carew’s challenge to team-mates
Thursday 25th February 2010, 10:00AM GMT.
Penalty king John Carew has challenged his Villa team-mates to go out and make history after insisting – ‘We’ve reached one final and we can make another.’
Carew scored twice from the spot late on to avoid extra-time and send Villa into the FA Cup quarter-finals at Crystal Palace’s expense with a 3-1 win at Villa Park.
It was the perfect preparation for Sunday’s Carling Cup final for Manchester United and Carew sees no reason why the claret and blues, who will now face Reading in the last eight of the FA Cup, cannot reach a second come May.
He said: “This is a really important stage of the season. We are in two cups still and it’s great for the club. We have reached one final and we can reach another final.
“Does it give us confidence for Sunday? Absolutely. We had a great game at the weekend by beating Burnley 5-2 and we had to continue that into this game.
“We managed to score three goals last night and in the league we have taken four points off United so we know we have the possibility to get something out of it.
“The feeling of being in a final is important. We have been getting better and better in the league over the last three or four years which is important but it’s also important to get to cup finals. You feel you are getting somewhere.
“It means so much to the fans and the club, it is a chance for us to make history. It is not many times in your life that you get an opportunity to play in a game in front of 80,000 to 90,000 people.
“We must enjoy the moment and be confident we can win.”
