SEB seeks end to goal drought

Wolves striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake today revealed his torment at his goal drought – but insists he is training harder after maintaining he is a born goalscorer.

The double Championship Golden Boot winner is enduring the most difficult period of his career.

After his 25 goals helped catapult Wolves to the title Championship last season, he has scored once in 17 Premier League outings and failed to notch in open play in 2009-10.

The 23-year-old’s struggles ultimately cost him his place as boss Mick McCarthy switched to 4-5-1 with Kevin Doyle the lone spearhead.

Ebanks-Blake admits it is a difficult time but is determined to use his exile to keep as sharp as possible.

“It’s no secret it’s been a frustrating time for me,” he said.

“I’ve had to learn to do a bit more in training and keep my body and fitness up and keep my focus and my head right.

“That’s all got to be ready for the time when I’m called upon.

“I’ve gone from being a regular starter and playing well to having an indifferent season this year.

“I’ve had to learn a lot from being out of the team because it’s very different not starting games to when you are and you see the other side of things.

“I get on with it and try to stay upbeat around the place and do well in training and enjoy it.”

But despite his absence, the former Manchester United reserve has no qualms at being axed- or the new system.

“The gaffer picks what he feels is the strongest team to win any given game,” he said.

“He’s gone with one up front which has worked for us in recent games.

“I’ve just got to keep my head down and everything right to try to get back in.

“And if I’m called upon at what I believe is the business end of the season then I’ve got to be ready.”

Ebanks-Blake admitted his barren run plays on his mind but has never lost the belief that he is a born goalscorer again.

“It does play on my mind but I’m still of a firm believer that I’m a goalscorer,” he said.

“It’s what I was born to do.

“I don’t know if anyone can name a goalscorer who hasn’t had an indifferent spell for scoring goals.

“But I’m fully focused on what lies ahead – I’m living for the now and at the business end of the season I feel I’ve still got a part to play.”

Ebanks-Blake added: “I’m always rooting for the lads as well – we’ve got a great set of lads here and no one causes any problems.

“All of the squad get behind whichever team is playing and I’ve just got to be patient and wait for my opportunity.”
