Albion 2 Reading 3
Wednesday 24th February 2010, 10:00PM GMT.
Reading struck an extra-time winner at the Hawthorns to deny Albion a dream FA Cup quarter-final showdown with local rivals Villa.
But the game was marred by ugly post-match scenes at The Hawthorns.
Reading player Jobi McAnuff was sent off after the final whistle for violent conduct following a clash with Albion’s Youssouf Mulumbu.
Then Reading’s players were involved in a shoving match with Albion stewards as they attempted to celebrate with fans at the Smethwick End.
Robert Koren’s double-strike looked set to hand Albion victory in their fifth-round replay – with help from Adam Federici’s goalkeeping howler.
But a Gianni Zuiverloon clanger allowed Brian Howard to equalise for the visitors three minutes into stoppage time and Gylfi Sigurdsson blasted the winner five minutes into extra time.
Royals No 1 Federici gave Koren a huge helping hand when his allowed the midfielder’s 47th-minute shot to squirm through his legs for the winner.
Koren had opened the scoring on six minutes but Jimmy Kebe equaliser just three minutes later.
There was a first-half blow for Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo ,as key forward Roman Bednar limped off with what looked like a groin injury.
But huge cheers greeted the return of James Morrison as a second-half substitute after a 10-month injury lay-off.
The match began at break-neck speed and Albion had several decent chances before they eventually went ahead on six minutes.
A shot from the edge of the box by Roman Bednar was saved by keeper Adam Federici but Luke Moore raced onto the rebound and his cross hit Federici and bounced towards goal.
Ryan Bertrand cleared it off the line but the ball ran to Koren who rifled home off the underside of the crossbar.
But Reading were soon level as Kebe, who had scored after nine seconds of the original tie, took just nine minutes to find the net in the replay.
Jobi McAnuff got past Abdoulaye Meite too easily on the Reading left, and his cross was met by Gylfi Sigurdsson, whose shot was only parried by Scott Carson, with Kebe was on hand to turn in the rebound.
Matt Mills sent a free header wide from a Reading corner, Bednar missed a superb chance from a Koren cross and Moore fired just wide.
But Albion got their stroke of luck within two minutes of the second half as Koren collected a throw from Gianni Zuiverloon, turned towards goal and let fly with a low shot that flew straight at Federici but slipped through the keeper’s legs and trickled in.
Reading could have been level within a minute as Sigurdsson unleashed a dipping shot from 25 yards, beating Carson but rattling the crossbar. McAnuff saw his follow-up spilled by Carson but was flagged offside in any case.
Carson rescued his side on 70 minutes with a smart low save from Sigurdsson after Simon Church had laid Kebe’s cross into his path.
There was a scare for Albion moments later when a poor ball by substitute Chris Wood found Church but Carson raced out well to clear.
Reading grabbed their equaliser in the third minute of added time as Zuiverloon failed to deal with Federici’s diagonal punt and Kebe nipped in, squaring for Howard who produced a calm finish past Carson.
Then, just five minutes into extra-time, the Royals went ahead for the first time.
A complete misjudgement by Meite presented the ball to Church who squared for Sigurdsson, who curled a brilliant 25-yard shot past Carson and into the top corner.

I was shocked and disappointed at yet another winnable match thrown away by our bottlers!!
if we carry on playing so negatively we are going to throw away automatic promotion.
Zuiverloon looked shocking and we need to get rid asap!
Win on saturday, come on yow baggies!
What a joke our full backs are.
We have a premier class midfield, a good championship strike force and a feeble defence compounded by those two idots Mattock and Zuiverloon.
Reading must love Zuiverloon as he pretty much handed them victory over 2 legs.
Before the regulars start, I’m not shadrag but a loyal Albion fan worried that these 2 clowns are going to ruin our season.
I wonder if the usual crowd are still going to stick up for these error prone players and make excuses about there age???
Im not making excuses for them but the truth of the matter is we got no one else so if we want promotion we must all stick together and get behind them, great to see Mozza back and daint he look good,COME ON YOU BAGGIZ aye boing boing

Well said Sir T. It’s starting to get like it was with Scott Darton all those years ago. The mob is looking for someone to lynch and Joe Mattock is the handy victim for them.
Id like to thank the Albion faithful who thought a chorus of boo`s at the final whistle will help our cause, aye boing boing
Report abuse
I boo’ed Terry and have a right to express what I thought of another inept defensive display. Shocking! Lets hope we don’t throw promotion away as easy as we did the next round of the cup.
At the risk of being repetitive, well said Sir T. Of course the boo boys have the right to boo. They’ve paid their money and I’m sure it will really make the players look forward to running out and playing for us on Saturday.
Yes these players are well paid but they’re not robots. Zoovy and Mattock alike are hard working players but going through a bad time. They’re both young lads and need help.
I said recently that I was proud of the Baggies supporters, last night I was ashamed.
Anyone who comes on to here defending Pinky and Perky (Zuiverloon and Mattock) should be embarrased to do so….
Even at seven years of age I knew the basics of defending, the par of them are just awful…and to think we payed £4.5m between them is worrying really!
Cech at left-back, and I would consider bringing Stephen Kelly from Fulham (ex blues lad) in on loan for Right-Back, bit of experience (any thoughts??)
Carry on with them pair of jokers….your season will end in disaster…no matter how good or bad the opposition is!.
2 i agree our back four a disgrace not worthy of wearing the shirt. Time for changes. Lets get behind them for the vist of Derby.Things can only get better Boing Boing
Report abuse
There’s a serious problem with the way Joe Mattock is playing. I think the reshuffle of the defense last night – presumably to give Jonas Olson a rest turned out to be misguided.
I’ve a lot of time for Zuiverloon and don’t think he ought to be in the same category as Joe Mattock. Nevertheless he did make mistakes last night.
As for the centre backs they were getting to pulled out of position to cover for the full backs, so not sure its fair to blame them all.
Its really quite frightening how bad our full backs are, I don’t think I need to explain how bad they are because everybody seems to know!
Just a mention to the pratt on the radio who decided to blame the defeat on Carson?? I must have watched a different game, thats if he even went to the game, couldn’t believe what I was hearing! you’re a joke mate
Report abuse
2, 4, 5 Did you actually go? Meite’s incompetance made even Zuiverloon look error free, yet you fail to mention him and instead go on about Mattock.
Its obvious to everyone that the simplest of defending would have seen us through, but idiotic mistakes cost us. Jonas Olsson was sorely missed, he should have been playing. Jara would be first choice right back these days, but his injury rules him out. Zuiverloon probably only has a future as a wide right player, though how he gets in when all of our squad are fit I’m not so sure. Cech was totally ineffective when he came on, but maybe he could get back in as left back. We have to go with what we have we can’t change till the end of the season, pointless getting on individuals backs when we have to play them.
What was going on at the end? Macanuff punched Mulumbu after the final whistle and rightly got dismissed. Our steward held Mulumbu back from retaliating. Our players had all gone off and were not involved, even Mulumbu walked away. Then our steward got accosted. Followed by other stewards. Not by hooligan fans but by Reading players and staff. It is all on video. If this had been fans there would be two year bans and heavy punishments going out, why should not Reading be treated the same? There is prima facie evidence of assault and affray and criminal acts on a football pitch. You have not heard the end of this.
Johnathan.
I’ve heard the Reading Manager on the radio this morning blaming it all on our stewards, I suppose the best form of defence is to attack, the trouble is of course everyone is taking his heavily censored version as gospel.
No one bothered asking why our stewards have never done this before when nearly every team that comes here goes to salute their fans. No doubt the outcome will be another ban for Jerome Thomas even though he wasn’t at the ground.

10,yes i did ACTUALLY GO,season ticket holder seat number e8 vv187.come and make your self known and we will have a chat about my opinion and my attendance.
No, the ‘usual crowd’ are not going to make excuses for the defending. We have, and are, reverting to trying to play close football on our own goal line which I believe to be absolutely stupid. Yes, both Zuiverloon and Meite made errors which cost us the game and agreed, Mattock does look overweight, but it does nothing for the players in question to publicly abuse them.
Does anyone honestly think Roberto doesn’t see what we see? Mattock was marking Reading’s most dangerous player, a speed merchant too. He did OK overall but not so badly as to deserve the insults he got from some silly old sod on WM. Meite had a good game but for that one howler. Zuiverloon will probably never be a fullback because he dithers occasionally instead of safety first and a full boot out of the ground. Reading deserved to win in the end although I have some reservations as to whether they deserve credit for it. Jobi McAnuff was too much and should have the book thrown at him for his antics at the end. Yet the ‘expert’ on ITV1 suggested the stewards were at fault. What if they had done nothing and it had turned really nasty? Reading’s manager should also be asked what he thought he was doing getting involved. A bitter taste to end a disappointing night.
Cyril.
As a fellow member of the ‘usual crowd,’ you’ve said exactly what I thought. I suppose if we were at the Wolves we’d be branded ‘happy clappers.’ I’ve no problem with this as when I read their pages the happy clappers seem to be the only ones living in the real world.
What me, you, Terry, Bomber, Forever, Warren, Ned and the rest of the usual crowd do is to support our team and try not to knee jerk to every setback. Indeed if those of us that have supported for more than the last few years knee jerked to every failing, we’d all be on our third or fourth knee replacement by now.
Do these people really think we don’t understand what we’re seeing or are we just thick. If we are isn’t it strange that most of what’s worth reading on here comes from the ‘usual crowd.’
Report abuse
That was a discrace. Lets start from the back, Scott Carson is not good enough he can never catch a ball he always fumbles, too many mistakes and time for Deano to come in. Zuiverloon, Mattock, Meite are not good enough, Cech is too weak in the tackle. Good to see Morrison back but cant expect too much for the rest of the season. We were out battled and Reading had more hunger , our players should be ashamed of themselves.
On another matter, our Stewards caused alot of trouble last night and we are now likely to be fined. Reading were entitled to celebrate with their fans.
No heart, no pride in the shirt, Roberto Di Matteo has no plan B.
Actually over the 90 minutes I thought the Albion were the slightly better team. On the positive side Molumbu was terrific (again), Koren had his best game for ages, Wood looked good when he came on.
There are defensive frailties. I think Mattock needs to be rested and we need the midfielders to cover for the fullbacks more (knowing we’ve got a weakness there).
Me and Pete waited for you in the Sportsman but you never showed mmmmmmmm. Carson had a superb game, and our stewards reacted to a situation that could easily have got out of hand when the whole of the Reading squad descended upon them. Are you simply reporting on what you have heard and seen on SKY?

Shadrag.
This latest plan of sticking to the same false name is great. It makes you much easier to spot.
Thank you for your consideration.
It wasnt a disgrace. Reading are a reasonable side and we havent got any fit fullbacks good enough to play at this level. Albion remind me of Clough’s comment about trevor Brooking, “floats like a butterfly, and stings like one too.” if only the side had as much fight as the stewards then promotion might be more likely.
Ah well Villa would have run riot against this backline so at least we are saved a humiliating derby defeat. Now we can concentrate on the league and hope to make the playoffs.

mattock is struggling big time ,but weve had no choice with cech being out, zoovi hasnt got anyone to push for hes place so is under performing,,on a good note we have players coming back which is great cos boy we need them..now lets get the job done and get promotion with all of us getting behind the boys to push us over the finishing line….GOING UP THE DI MATTEO WAY,,IN STYLE OF COURSE,,OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH YES..

Rightly booed off last night, the players should hang their heads in shame. Mattock and Zuiv are not good enough, Scott Carson cannot perform the basics and we have Deano sat on the bench? What is worse is that as a club we looked like really sore losers last night, trouble with our players and stewards, it was embarresing. With that sort of behaviour we will be playing right into Derbys hands on Sat.

If I’m wrong perhaps you ought to look to yourself as this is very similar to his posts. You should also be careful because you have a history of forgetting to change your name back.

Yes it was awful – too many basic errors – and at 90 minutes you don’t try to be clever, you boot it out the ground.
Bring on Derby when we can get some players back and look forward to watson joining us.
The train has slowed down but it aint stopped so get off if you like but three points could put us back into auto promotion.
Oh – and i thought Scott carson made some fantastic saves AGAIN last night – get off his back.

Happy.
Apologies to you and Worcester as I missed you off my ‘usual crowd’ list when answering Cyril.
Good points from last night.
1 No more cards or injuries (I think.)
2 JT has finished his ban.
3 We’ve not got the distraction of the cup any more although at least two games too late.
4 Together with Sunday this will act as a real kick up the backside.
5 RDM has players coming back all the time and we can now concentrate on the real job of getting promoted.
I heard Tom Ross on the way home, saying as a Blues fan, he’d choose winning the cup over promotion. Easy to say when you’re mid table in the Prem. I know some of our fans would agree but my thoughts are that if we’d gone on to win the cup but not gone up, we would lose Dorrans, Jara, Olsson, Tamas and possibly one or two others in the summer. The only way for our club to go forward is by being in the PL. Then we can think about winning cups, like the Villa are doing.

happy,,spot on mate scotty was close for motm last night, peeps need to get off hes back, hes the best we got so abit of support for him would be nice..hope bedners ok cos we cant do without him at the moment,LETS GET BEHING THE BOYS NOW AND GET THE JOB DONE,,,,UP WE GO..

In reply to other comments we shouldn’t overlook the positives in the game. Robert Koren, Molumbu, Wood and Cox were very good imho.
Thought needs to go into discipline. As we went for the quick counter break towards the end of 90 minutes looking for a third we lost shape and made ourselves vulnerable. Costly, but discipline is something that can be put right.
One other point…if we keep telling our players that they will be tired because of too many matches then psychologically they will behave that way. We should be celebrating the team’s ability to dig deep into energy reserves as professionals and keep going under the toughest of circumstances. That, after all, is what champions do and is partly why teams do became champions.

Welcome to the usual crowd.

I’m honoured!

If it hadn’t been for Carson the score could’ve been worse, so why not give the guy a break?
We know where the problems lie, but there’s no point in February demanding a shed load of new players. We need to get behind RDM and the ones we have still standing.
Like everyone else I was disappointed and frustrated with the performance, but getting on their backs isn’t going to inspire a better performance against Derby.
And you as well.
And me, what? Isn’t there a difference between being critical of a performance and raising questions as to why it was poor and simply slagging off the team and individual players?
Sorry Baggiebob. I should have been more clear. Earlier I said to Happy that I’d missed him off what someone referred to as the ‘usual crowd’ of people that don’t get on the back of the players every time they have a bad game. If you look at the previous post from Brierley Hill you will see where I was coming from. It was meant as a compliment not an insult
Report abuse
I think that was TRBH point mate I reckon its just snobbery tho people on here reckon if they write summat perfectly spelt and with good grammar and try and sound like a sports journo it means their opinion means more! Wrong be honest rather than clever….we were rubbish end of story we have major problems in defence and upfront and if we are not carefull we’ll get found out. People are dreaming if they think we have the divine right to go up automatically and even if we do we are worse than we were last time round. I’m glad financially we are sound and think we play decent footy and for the most part I enjoy watching it better winning most weeks than getting pumped week in week out like we have done in the Prem. I’ll still be here if we ended up in vauxhall conference how many of you ”experts” would?
Baggieboy,
I can’t quite work out your point re: Bully, but what’s grammar got to do with how much you love a football club?
Bomber, Bully, Cyril, Nedball, wbaforever, Happy etc all use good grammar, but for what I can see from their posts, they’d all be there, as would I, if we were back at Twerton Park tomorrow.
I agree we were poor in parts last night but all I think a few of us is saying is that by getting on their backs, there’s more chance of us imploding (i.e. players and manager not running going that extra yard) and fluffing promotion if people get on their backs and abuse them, than there is if we get behind them.
If we ever needed further evidence that piling pressure on and barracking players is counter-productive, see Wolverhampton Wanderers 1992-2008….
Baggieboy.
You couldn’t be further from the truth. If you look back I’ve never had a go at anyone about their grammar or their spelling. I only have a go at people that come on after a defeat and do nothing more than call the manager an idiot or a certain player a donkey without justifying their reasons. What’s the point in doing that if you’re a supporter? If you think Joe Mattock is too slow, that’s fair enough, it’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it but that’s different to coming on and being insulting or abusive about him.
I’m from Smethwick, left school with no qualifications and definitely don’t think I’m a sports journalist. I love the Albion, like a debate/argument with anybody, whether their English is good or not.
PS. I apologised to Baggiebob. He took what I said in the wrong way. I wasn’t having a go at what he said or how he said it.
Warren dont you mean WWFS 1877 – Present…. But if youre telling me the players cant handle criticsm(?) then they should hand there pay packets in I get Balled out if I do my job not up to standard and I dont go home to a nice car, house or wife for that matter!!! I just think despite our position we are frailer on the pitch than most of us think and blind faith is just as un productive as booing I reckon! My point re bully as you said is just cos someone writes something that looks like anaylasis and is written nice doesnt mean its more valid than anything else. Sometimes I think our lot are more deluded than our inbred cousins.
Ok Baggieboy, fair point (especially the bit re: Wolves!!) and I applaud you as a genuine fan. I do think there’s a difference though, between booing at the final whistle (which in some ways is fair enough), and just plain abusing somebody during a game. It didn’t help Scott Darton did it?
There are a significant number of clubs that get relegated from the Prem and drown in their own expectation the following season, and they aren’t generally the teams that bounce back up.
Sometimes I think we only see our own problems. Given, Mattock’s not playing well; Forest will tell you they’ve not even got a left-back. Newcastle haven’t won away since the start of December.
It’s never gonna be perfect, but I just think we should get behind them while we’ve still got the chance of getting back up there.
TRBH I werent saying you were but it does happen on here and thats a fact but i reckon if thats all you can say about someones post then you have no point either. I got no prob with people slating players certainly on here at least it gets it out and they only do it cos it hurts them to see a poor performance and i think its great feel that deep about the club, do the club feel the same about us? we have gone backwards on the pitch over the last few years and just because we are doing ok in this poor division doesnt disguise that. we aint achieved anything above the bare minimum of what is expected forgive me if im not as the others say ”happy clapping”
Scott Darton ??? Has our keeper got a bad cold ?? (and no jokes about its all he caught….)

Aye Warren I dont disagree Im not one for out and out abuse but i admit to losing my rag sometimes just as much with some fans as players

Baggieboy.
I know the club, the manager and the players don’t think about us fans too much. But they’ll think even less if we boo them off when they lose. I know we’ve had two c**p displays in a row, I just don’t want it to be three.
It happens at some clubs, one of them down the road, where the players have been scared of playing at home. Liverpool fans get behind their players and over the years they’ve achieved a bit haven’t they?
I respect anyones right to have a go on here but I have a right to disagree with them.
At the end of the day we’re all Baggies supporters so let’s not fall out over it. Leave that to the Wulfies.

I say things as i see them, and in the past i have questioned Carsons performances. But for anybody who was ACTUALLY at the game last night to say he was at fault for any of their goals is either stupid or blind. Carson had imo a very good game and made some brilliant saves. We lost the game due to not using the most important part of a footballers anatomy, your brain!!
Loony with 30 seconds remaining should have hit row z, kick it, head it, either one!!
We have discussed the problem for weeks, our fullbacks are not good enough. When we were thumped against Forest RDM dropped Loony and Mattock and brought in Jara aand Cech bringing instant successs and a unbeaten run. Jara and Cech get injured and we go out and sign not one but two MIDFIELDERS on loan, Cyril Randle states that do you think RDM doesnt see what we see?
Cyril/Gramps, if he does see what we see then i find it even harder to understand why we havent another single right back at the club!!

Quite frankly don’t know what the express and star are talking about. The Reading players were not trying to celebrate with their fans, they were however attempting to get at the ref. In fact one of their management staff pushed the ref and attempted to take a swing at him…..how do I know this because it all took place directly in front of where I was sat. The Reading player was sent off for violent conduct, all our players had been ushered off the pitch. Our stewards were attempting to keep the officials safe and heard the Reading players down to their own fans. To be perfectly frank Reading football club should be in utter disgrace at the actions of not only their players but their coaching staff. The situation at the end was nothing to do with WBA, it was purely Reading. Our stewards were doing their best to ensure the safety of both the officials and the Reading players. I couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing. They had just won the game and yet they behaved like a pack of hooligans……awful, truly embarassing and awful

It’s understandable that emotions are high after what happened last night, but hopefully the management have enough experience in the game to see what everybody else knows. At the back,Zoovy can’t defend,Mattock just hasn’t got the quality to be first choice, and Meite-well when we signed him he was fifth choice centre half at a struggling club (Bolton),say no more.Unfortunately we are short of cover,so we have to put them in and just hope other players can help them out ’til we get better replacements. What else can you do?
All the comments appear mainly to be aimed at the full backs and i can only agree that they were awful last night, to me Mattock just is not up to standard and Zoovy is struggling however we seem to have forgotton the last two goals he has scored for us to help the cause he wasnt that bad then was he??.
But in fairness if you review the team as a whole and are looking at individuals then surely the performances of others must be considered
Luke Moore- again went missing
Chris Woods- simply not good enough at this level yet
I also look at the performance of Robert Koren yes he got us the goals last night but i do worry that at times that his body language portrays someone who is not interested as we often see with Chris Brunt.
I dont agree with booing our team off but i must admit that i am now starting to get concerned over the performances that we have put in of late and worry that we may find ourselves in the play offs and end up with an early semifinal exit.
One final point I know we need a full back but i think i would use our loan spot left to bring in a striker and quick
Report abuse
Lets start with Mattock a young lad low on confidence a court case looming and a little over weight, Should be dropped imeadiatly
and given to the back room boys to sort out his fitness and his head
Zuverloon seems to be showing signs he may be
an attaking midfielder but he can’t defend so better off with Jara even with one leg (only joking) my defence would be Cech at left back Olson and Meite centre half because Tamas can play right back although againt Derby with them parking the bus in the goal could play 3 at the back Cech Olson and Tamas 5 in mid field Cox and Bednar up front as they are the best we have
Report abuse
The full back issue has been rumbling for 5 years or more. FACT: fullback is a specialist position in every way- running the offside, denying widemen space to cross and then and only then they can be an additional attacking option. neither Zuiverloon or Mattock have the first idea of positional play-Paddy Mulligan could subdue the John Robertson’s of this world by making them play the way HE wanted them to play…and he was half the pace of Mattock!…..For crying out loud Roberto sort the full backs out before we become a replica of your failed MK Don’s promotion bid…..

I would start with Nouble in his place and with JT restored could run their defenders dizzy. Must guard against Savage getting Mulubu or Watson an early bath I expect Zloon
