Villa winger’s club and country target

Villa winger Ashley Young has targeted two Wembley appearances in a week after revealing his hopes for an England recall.
Young is a certain starter for Villa in Sunday’s Carling Cup final at the national stadium, but has his fingers crossed for an international recall as part of the England squad who face Egypt at Wembley three days later.
Fabio Capello’s right-hand man Franco Baldini was in the Villa Park stands to watch Young find the net in Sunday’s 5-2 victory over Burnley and the in-form Villa wide man hopes to have left the Italian suitably impressed.
He said: “Hopefully, fingers crossed he was impressed with what he saw but I’ve got to do well for the club, Aston Villa, and the manager was delighted.
“I was delighted with my performance and getting on the score-sheet and I am claiming an assist for Stewart’s goal as well! It is always nice to get on the score-sheet, but it is a team game and they were fantastic in the second half.”
Young has come under fire from some sections of the media for failing to hit the highs of last season, but has always been fiercely defended by boss Martin O’Neill.
The England star insists has been happy with his form for the claret and blues.
He said: “There have been times when people have said I’ve not had as good a season as last season but the manager has been full of praise for me, he has always backed me non-stop, and I just want to do well for the team and the manager.
“Martin instils a lot of confidence into you and if you look at the displays I have put in, especially in the last few weeks, I am delighted with them and how things are going for the club.”
