Wolves can keep Doyle insists Ward

Defender Stephen Ward believes Wolves can provide the right platform for Kevin Doyle to stay at Molineux.

Boss Mick McCarthy admitted last week that it would be difficult to persuade the club’s £6.5million record signing to stay if top clubs came chasing him in the summer.

Doyle has emerged as the enduring symbol of Wolves’ survival plight, top-scoring with six goals as well as being the club’s outstanding player.

Ward believes his fellow Irishman is unlikely to have his head turned, after rejecting the chance to join more established Premier League sides last summer.

The left-back said: “I wouldn’t be surprised if clubs at the top of the Premier League are keeping an eye on him because his performances have been superb.

“But Kevin loves it here. He chose this club over a host of clubs. He liked the set-up and the players, we’d like to keep him as long as we can and I’m sure the management does.”

Ward reckons the former Reading hitman has led the line as well as anyone in the Premier League in recent weeks since the switch to a 4-5-1 formation.

He said: “Kev’s been absolutely brilliant all season, but especially the last couple of weeks when he’s played that role on his own.

“In my opinion I don’t see many playing it better than him. He can lead the line so well – he’s so strong and so willing and he was outstanding again on Saturday. He’s causing defences a lot of problems – he’s been different class.

“There’s no limit for him. He’s come from the same league as I have and I always tell him he’s improved since back then.

“He really was a good player in Ireland – one of the best in the league – but since he’s come to England he’s just taken the step up in his stride.”
