Iwelumo hoping for Wolves role
Monday 22nd February 2010, 11:15AM GMT.
Wolves striker Chris Iwelumo could still play a part in the Premier League campaign after breaking his 11-month goal duck for Bristol City against Albion.
The Scotland international struck his first goal since last March to help his loan club defeat the Baggies 2-1 at Ashton Gate.
Iwelumo, who has been cursed by injuries in recent months, has hinted at a return to Molineux to battle for a place once his initial month’s loan with the Robins ends in early March.
He said: “I am here for a month. I just want to get some games under my belt and we’ll see where I go from there. I couldn’t tell you what will happen. I just want to play games and we will address it at the end of the month.
“I am keeping my head down, getting my match fitness and getting games under my belt and hopefully I will get some goals as we go along.”
Iwelumo is hoping to use his spell with Gary Johnson’s side to regain full fitness, after twice suffering damage to a metatarsal during appearances for Wolves.
The 31-year-old scored his first goal in City colours yesterday to equalise against Albion and Lee Johnson then grabbed the winner.
He said: “It was my fifth metatarsal. I have been trying to get to the Premier League for the last eight years, so it was disappointing to break it when I did. I fractured it on July 10 and I came back around three weeks early.
“I came off the bench against Villa and started against Stoke but then I ‘re-opened’ it, so I had six weeks without doing anything. I came off the bench six weeks later exactly against Tottenham and since then I haven’t looked back.
“It was just opened up a bit the second time, so that wasn’t as serious as the initial break.”
