Dorrans ‘a special talent’ for Iwelumo
Monday 22nd February 2010, 9:30AM GMT.
Bristol City hero Chris Iwelumo has hailed Albion goalscorer Graham Dorrans as a ‘special talent’ after locking horns with his fellow Scot for the first time.
Baggies’ players refused to speak after the defeat, leaving on-loan Wolves striker Iwelumo to deliver his verdict on the game and his fellow Scotland international.
The game was his first glimpse of Dorrans in the flesh, and was left impressed with the Albion playmaker despite City ending the day as victors.
He said: “Graham is a special talent. He is 22 or 23 and he is an outstanding player. I never really knew a lot about him and I have not got into any of the Scotland squads he was in because of my injury. But he is a fantastic talent.”
Dorrans’ first-half goal was cancelled out after the break by Iwelumo, who struck his 100th career goal and his first since moving from Molineux to Ashton Gate on loan eight days ago.
It was also his first goal in 11 injury-hit months.
The 31-year-old said: “It’s been a long time coming for me. I haven’t scored since last March but I have been injured for about 10 of those months.I actually forgot it was my 100th goal but one of the boys reminded me.
“I was just delighted and it was good to get the goal at the time we got it. I am delighted. The most important thing was getting the right result and I think we justified that.
“We could have had a few more goals in the second half and there were a few penalties that I thought should have been given, but that’s just one of those things.
“The boys showed on Tuesday that we can play nice, offensive football and we love to create chances and we just kicked on from there.
“The first half was 50-50 and a bit of a scrappy game, but it opened up in the second half and we definitely proved to be the better team. The goal has been a long, hard time but that’s football for you.
“You just have to take it on the chin and see a positive side to everything. We knew we had to kick on from the goal and people know what they are going to get from us.
“I thought the fans were excellent and they pushed us on as 12th man, hopefully they have a lot of happy times to come.”
Iwelumo was involved in a rugged battle with Albion vice-captain Jonas Olsson.
The Scot said: “I think Jonas probably got the better of the first-half and I was a bit disappointed with myself at half-time. I don’t think I won enough headers, but the second-half was better.
“It’s also down to the players running off you. I thought Danny Haynes was different class and they just couldn’t cope with him. In the last couple of weeks there has been a great atmosphere among the boys and I am just looking forward to a win and a justified win as well.
“We’ve just got to keep doing the right things and I am sure we will keep putting the points on the board.”
