Bristol City 2 Albion 1

Sunday 21st February 2010, 4:30PM GMT.

Bristol City 2 Albion 1

Albion paid for a dreadful second-half display at Ashton Gate as their unbeaten away record ended at 12 Championship matches.

On-loan Wolves striker Chris Iwelumo scored Bristol City’s first goal as the Baggies threw away a half-time lead.

Graham Dorrans’ 13th goal of the season had given Roberto Di Matteo’s men the lead at the end of a scrappy first-half ,but City improved dramatically after the interval and Iwelumo equalised on 55 minutes.

Then Lee Johnson applied the winning touch four minutes later from a cross by Danny Haynes, as the hosts exploited some woeful  defending.

Albion were denied a sixth-minute penalty when Roman Bednar surged through the middle and looked to be tripped by Louis Carey.

But they survived a few scares too, with Danny Haynes causing Joe Mattock some serious concerns on the Baggies left.

David Clarkson fired wide, Chris Iwelumo headed off target and Bradley Orr missed narrowly.

Home goalkeeper Dean Gerken pulled of a smart save on 24 minutes to keep out a near-post flick by Bednar, but within seconds the visitors were ahead.

A threaded pass by Gianni Zuiverloon found Dorrans who ran through a gap in the Robins defence before finishing with aid of the far post.

City looked poor for long spells but they should have levelled seven minutes before the break when Marvin Elliott found Haynes, but the forward fired badly wide.

But Bristol City returned for the second-half fired up and they served Albion with several warnings before drawing level on 55 minutes. A corner from the left found its way to Iwelumo, who poked home from close range.

It got worse four minutes later as more dreadful defending allowed the home side to go ahead.

Substitute Andy Slory lost the ball on halfway and Haynes advanced unchallenged down the right before crossing to the far post, where Lee Johnson was one of two unmarked players and slotted home.

Albion failed to make any headway in their hunt for an equaliser and it was the hosts who looked the more likely scorers in the final half-hour.

A sickening dose of reality, knew we would have to lose eventually – hopefully thats got the bad out of the way. Fed up of always getting the bookings how often do the teams who play us get booked? Another mess around from tv, so many night games and weird shedules to fit sky/bbc and the onus was all on city and hey presto we lost to a team who looked like they were playing their cup final. lots of home games coming up lets get on it! Gutted though how bad was the 2nd half :(

Thought we looked OK first half but very, very tired second half, lacking a spark.

Mattock had a woeful game in defence. Inevitable that this would be exploited second half. When’s Cech coming back?

A game of two hands – Bednar’s knee was held as he tried to get back up on his feet on the edge of their area in the first few minutes, then the “assist” for the Iwelumo goal.

These shouldn’t be excuses for some poor decision making by Albion in the 2nd half at both ends of the pitch. RDM called it an immature display and I can’t argue with that. Hopefully, it’ll shake up a few like the Forest game did.

No great surprise really, thats 10 games in 35 days now with another on weds against Reading in the cup and again and just 3 days later another league game against Derby! Only a fool wouldn’t be able to see that sooner or later a punishing schedule like that would catch up with us. That would explain why we started so well, 1-0 up in control and looking likely to score again, then totally fading in 2nd half. Nobody made any errors or such, they just seemed to lose “puff” and stop doing all the good things that have stood us in good stead over the season. Dorrens is a particular concern. I worry he may be heading for burn-out given he’s played all the games and almost always completes the full 90 mins. Atheletes need to rest to be at optimum performance levels and Newcastle & Forest are currently benefiting from not being involved in cup competitions. I would seriously consider resting several players on Weds night – the cup is starting to impact on our league form too much.

Weds team should be something along the lines of:

    Carson

    Zuuvy, Mattock, Meitie, Tamas,

    Cox, Slory, Mulumbo, Koren, Thomas

    Wood

I’d have Bednar and Dorrens on bench just in case, but would hoe not tohave to use them. Would like to rest the full backs as well but there is currently no alternative(s)

Try reading the post above and then perhaps you will think again. I’m surprised you didn’t mention Brunt who had a terrible game but he is another suffering from playing too many games.
I’ve seen the lad Haynes do what he did to Mattock against other fullbacks but he doesn’t do it consistently, he has pace to burn. We had a RB in the seventies called Paddy Mulligan. He made Joe Mattock look like Usain Bolt yet he rarely got a roasting because he had experience of positioning and bringing a winger round to his point of view. Mattock has yet to learn this but he is a decent footballer and he will learn it. He will never be an Ashley Cole as he will never have that raw pace but people need to have a bit of patience with him.
I agree about Nouble, he just looked totally lost but I’m sure the coaching staff will sort this out.
The defence looked poor second half as the ball was constantly coming back at them.
But at the end of the day there were a lot of very tired players on that pitch.

      • mancbaggie

I remember Paddy Mulligan well, but he was playing in a team containing Statham, Cunningham, Brown, Robson, Regis, Cantello, Barnes ……. no wonder he was able to play despite a lack of pace….that team could have carried me!

Seriously though – that team also virtually picked itself and the same players played week in week out – including cup runs and Europe. And were a successful top flight club.

The minute Albion start fielding weakened teams in the FA Cup we might as well all start following the ‘Big Four’ or Rugby.

That was not a tired performance, that was a poor performance.

I stick by what I said. No one carried Paddy, he was a good old pro. People these days are far too impatient and ready to ditch anyone that isn’t an instant success. I don’t profess to know whether Joe Mattock will make it or not but I’m willing to leave that decision to RDM and his staff.

I thought a lot of our players looked tired, especially Dorrans. I still think he should have been rested in last weeks cup game and if he’s fit for Wednesday night he shouldn’t play anyway. Surely it’s time we worked on how to play without him as we will have to if he gets injured or suspended.

Credit to Bristol Rovers for playing well and catching us on an off day. I suppose along with the gloating from the Dark Side this will bring out the doom mongers from our own, all hanging their pet theories on it.

Once again we seem to be the only team to break any rules, was it 4-0 on yellow cards again. I watched the Football League programme last night when at least three Derby players assaulted the red carded Swansea player and none of them recieved any punishment. A burnt-out offering from a worn out team. Bristol were poor 1st half and we were just passable. Then reality of too many games too close together struck and we were running just to stand still. Many years ago, each League played 42 games plus FA Cup. We still got what were called ‘end-of-season’ matches when the players couldn’t raise a gallop. Now the beloved Prem play 38 plus and we play 46 plus with the International breaks benefitting no one in particular but causing congestion on a silly scale for lower clubs. Will it change back? Answers on a pin head please. Now what was that other match I intended to comment on? I remember Chelsea got TWO away from home, but who did they play? My memory is getting bad with old age.

Here we go again , one bad result out of the last seven and the doom merchants are back again. Have Forest and Newcastle had a blip of course they have ,all teams do in this division. We learned two things from yesterday , firstly the team are exhausted and Slory and Nouble need to adapt to the championship. Slory should have made a better attempt at stopping Haynes making the second goal and Nouble just seems interested in doing his own thing. Koren in particular seemed reluctant to pass the ball to him.Perhaps Nouble would be more effective down the middle but yesterday he never got into the game. On what wev’e seen so far from these two players we’d have better off keeping Tex who though he lacks pace is a better team player. Koumas is needed quickly. With him and JT back things would rapidly improve.

I think its about time someone from the club told us what is happening with the injuries. When or are we going to see Miller playing again and is Morrison ever going to be back? Is Cech playing Saturday? Losing Jara is a major blow as he has been excellent all season. Also I was disappointed with Nouble yesterday after seeing him against Scunthorpe he looked a really good prospect and what the hell happened with Slory? And Brunt seems to blow hot and cold. Maybe the boys are tired after a tough schedule but jeez our second half performance was awful. I thought that after our pitiful display against Notts Forest we could not play so poorly again but sadly it seems I was wrong. I am worried but still believing. Just want some honest answers.

Don’t know if you missed it but Miller did play a couple of games but was injured when brought down for the penalty against Blackpool.
Morrison is back in training but if you follow the E&S you will have seen an article a while back interviewing him and detailing the fact that he has undergone major surgery on his heel.
Cech has been injured and can’t play until he’s fit.
None of this information is a secret and has all been published on the club website and in the local press. If you go back into the archives it is still there.
As for Brunt, I think he’s struggling for form but like Dorrans has played almost every minute of every game and is probably just knackered.
Slory came on just as Bristol City had upped their game and seemed a bit bewildered by it all and needs time to adjust from the pace of Dutch football, on top of this he hasn’t been playing regularly over there.
The one I can’t explain is Nouble, just didn’t seem with it on Sunday.

I’m not complaining about the bad decisions as such, the penalty we should have had when Roman was brought down may well have been difficult for the officials to see, especially as it was an unusual sort of foul. Having said that I’ve looked at the recording of their first goal this morning and the referee was perfectly placed to see the hand ball that led to it with no players obstructing his view. So how did he not see it?
Did he have his eyes closed?
Did he have a brain seizure and think he was refereeing a Harlem Globetrotters game?
Add to this the yellow card count again I think it was 4-0 and is it any wonder I’m developing a severe persecution complex. We accept the terrible decisions in the PL as a fact of life but what is happening this season? I saw an identical tackle to the one Olsson got booked for by a Tottenham player on MOTD2. Result no action, credit to the Bristol City player who made no attempt to get Olsson booked but the ref decided to anyway.

Hi TRBH, I had stopped posting as I got sick of the constant reactionary drivel and petty name calling on our pages but felt compelled to comment on this as I actually watched this game got a free ticket as I’m friends with a lad at city and was working in the area. I think you are probably right to feel agrieved at one or two of the decisions but in my humble opinion Looms should have been awarded a pen for Olsson trying to swap shirts 2o mins before the end. I was really looking forward to watching this game, sizing upm the old enemy especially since you have been in fine form and I think RDM looks to be a great coach. Unfortunately I saw a side that looked very much out on its feet, no doubt there is quality there enough to win the league and certainly get promoted which you will, I was particualrly looking forward to seeing Dorrans but he looked shattered and drifted along on the outside of the game and by midway through the second half he had dissapeared completely. I think Jara was obviously a big loss and Mattock…well what can you say he put you under severe pressure throughout and more so when you switched to 3 at the back as he certainly is no centre half. Having said all that for any REAL baggies fan this is just another result in a long hard season and only the SECOND on your travels so I don’t believe this has any bearing on your title or promotion credentials law of avergaes say your going to lose one or two here and there and against a side fighting for their lives it is always difficult. Hopefully RDM can get your lads rested and refreshed, and everyone is in the same boat the CCC is a slog but you’ve been there and done it and possess the now how and quality to push through the rest of the season. Hopefully we’ll have a good PL derby to look forward to next year and then I might get some decent banter.

I suppose it’s the same over here on a small scale. When a Wulfie can see the effect too many games is having but some of our own fans can’t.

Cheers Bully, you can tell it’s been a while since I posted how bad is my spelling and grammar? Honestly I don’t know what our lot expected, maybe part of it comes from the fact that this season more than any other the quality down there is so poor we could have given ourselves a much better chance, but we weren’t able (or willing) to get the extra one or two quality players in. However 17th is good enough for me this year sad as it may seem but that is the landscape of English football at the moment you are Premier League or you are nowt! Which really couldn’t be further from the truth but the Ad execs don’t want anyone to think otherwise. As for the moaners they are all either old timers who can’t let go of the past or younger ones who have been brought up believing we are a ”Big” club with a divine right….or they are just divs!!!! Bolton game will have a massive say on where we end up but to be fair Burnley, Hull and Bolton don’t seem to want to win either and catch us so maybe it wont be totally down to what we do. The comments above about the number of games is- and yes other teams get games too but not many are under the pressure to win AND play well as we are every game.

I felt sorry for Mattock – Haynes played the sort of game that will have his manager baffled – that early run set the pattern for the play and he had no help from Nouble.

We never expected to win every game and we still have one in hand over Forest, so we chalk it up as a one off and rest a few players against Reading.

When I got back from Bristol I rewound the video to watch the first half of the game I’d just seen…and yes my eyes did not deceive me. Frank Nouble actually touched the ball twice in the first 26 mins. This simply has to be some sort of record ??

Second half we were totally bushed and I’m afraid the number of games played on ploughed fields is having an effect as we knew it would. Nouble and Slory are simply not good enough and Koren looks totally disinterested. At present he’s very much a passenger, giving the ball away and not tracking back. Lets hope that on Wednesday, a few players get rested and RDM gives a couple of reserves a run. A 6th round tie against Vile would be nice, but the main aim has to be promotion to the Greed League.

a couple of rounds from the final.Up for the cup,

I recorded the game while I watched it on TV with the intention of keeping it until my nephew returns from America. At the end, I wiped it clean. I wasn’t sure whether Koren was interested or not. What I am sure of is if he plays like that he’ll not get into the World Cup team. Completely error strewn. Nouble reminded me of the last ‘London genius’ we borrowed a season ago. Too good for us he thought and still he is loaned out. Slory tried hard at least but it all went on around him. Yes, Mattock was skinned for speed but he needed support from a fast Nouble. I think Bristol’s manager spotted we were shot at half time and risked all by fitting expensive Duracell to his players. No.25 baggieboy2. You also need some batteries for your watch. Oh, can’t tell the time yet, talk to Daddy he’ll show you.

Complete no show in the 2nd half.

At half time I went to purchase a cup of tea thinking we were set to go on and win by 2 or 3 goals, but we just didn’t come out in the 2nd half at all did we?

All we can do is learn from this and make sure that we’re not left as confused as to why no-one in an Albion shirt came out in the 2nd half to play football.

Never mind, bad day at the office. Let’s move on to the next match and hopefully restoring normal service.
