Wolves 0 Chelsea 2
Saturday 20th February 2010, 5:30PM GMT.
Brave Wolves came as close to matching Chelsea in any of their four Premier League meetings but were ruthlessly punished by two Didier Drogba strikes.
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech kept his side in the game with superb point blank saves to deny Adlene Guedioura and Kevin Foley in the second -half, also keeping out Kevin Doyle in the first period.
But on a day when visiting captain John Terry was abused by all four sides of Molineux on his return from his much-publicised personal problems, Drogba stole the headlines with predatory strikes in the 40th and 67th minutes.
It left Mick McCarthy’s side cruelly empty-handed from a game where their only crime was to fail to take their chances.
But at least they stayed a point clear of the relegation zone with a game in hand on fourth-bottom Hull, one place below after the Tigers’ defeat at West Ham.
Wolves contained the leaders for virtually the entire first half, only to trail to Drogba’s strike. Clear-cut chances were at a premium with defences on top.
Michael Ballack sent a free header wide on four minutes, but it was Doyle who had the first on target effort after a quarter of an hour.
The £6.5million record signing cut inside from the left and shrugged off two challenges in a Steve Bull-like charge across goal, before producing a tame drive straight at Cech.
Doyle worked Cech much better in the 20th minute, when his tight angled volley on the turn was tipped around the post after a quick throw by Foley.
In between, the striker teed up Foley to hit the side-netting as Wolves tried to find a breakthrough.
But Chelsea hit back and Michael Ballack was a couple of feet away with a dipping volley, after Doyle headed clear Florent Malouda’s corner at the near post.
David Jones was next to try his luck with a long range effort which swirled away from Cech’s near post.
But then came the goal that gave Chelsea the crucial advantage in a move that for once proved the gulf in class.
Drogba slid home ahead of Stephen Ward after Yury Zhirkov’s one-two with Ballack and cross split a defence that hesitated a fraction too long following a home attack.
Wolves stepped things up after the break and Chelsea were indebted to Cech to stay in the game.
First, the goalkeeper parried away a stinging volley from Adlene Guedioura on 55 minutes.
Then, eight minutes later, he beat away Kevin Foley’s effort after the midfielder was left in the clear by Terry’s mistake, before Karl Henry could only scuff the rebound towards goal.
Just as Wolves had reached a head of steam, Chelsea struck a decisive second goal, again through Drogba for his 25th goal of the season in all competitions to leave McCarthy’s men with a mountain to climb.
Drogba outmuscled Christophe Berra from Cech’s long kick before rounding goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, who didn’t have another effort to save all afternoon.
In a last throw of the dice, McCarthy brought on Greg Halford, Geoffrey Mujangi Bia and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake for Foley, Jones and Matt Jarvis on 77 minutes as they switched to 4-4-2 from 4-5-1.
But apart from two missile Halford throws that saw Doyle’s shot on the turn that just drift wide and Terry clear off the line, Wolves’ couldn’t penetrate Chelsea’s back line.

Just got back from the game.
Well done to everybody in a Gold shirt other than Stephan Ward. You we’re excellent today.

So you thought Bera was good then?
Worst central defender to wear the Orange shirt. Worse than Collins.
I wouldn’t go as far as worse than Collins…
Other than his cock up for the 2nd goal i thought we handled the best striker in the world pretty well to be honest.

Spirited performance, tried hard but undone yet again by the inability to score and schoolboy defending.
Wolves have scored the second least home goals in the Land, and unfortunately today some of the best chances fell to players( Foley-Ward-Henry)Who just do not look like scoring.
Doyle again worked his socks off,and the team played some decent stuff, but with 5 of the next 7 away unless we can start to take the chances we are creating,we may have to rely on other teams performances to determine the outcome of our season.
Maltawolf – you are a clown! We cannot play a 4-4-2 in this division without conceeding a hatful of goals, We should have been playing this formation since December when E-Blake was obviouly struggling. The team played well today and on another day might have scored in the first half (like Tottenham) and given themselves something to cling to. More of the same please!
Fenwolf,Where do i mention 4-4-2? I praised the teams performance in general and merely pointed out that unfortunately the best chances fell to players who do who look like scoring.Learn how to read idiot.
Agreed.
Good all round performance but undone by Wards failure to get goal side of the Prems top scorer and a Berra/Hanneman pantomine for the 2nd goal.
I dont think we were expecting any points and with all the other sides around us losing as well this weekend just means 1 more game out the way and 1 step closer to survival.

Their first goal, was a case of fantastic 1 touch passing resulting in a well made goal. Chelsea have scored goals like that against the best teams in the world, so why should ward get the blame when they score it against us. Yes, if he was goal side of him, he probably wouldnt have scored, and i feel that a left back should be on the agenda in january, but i cant blame any player for the first goal.
The second goal on the other hand was very poor on our behalf, and killed the game off. On a positive note, apart from the score line, we played quite well and had some of the better chances, Foleys shooting has definately improved since he has moved up to midfield, and most of our shots were on target, but too close to the keeper.
Considering i too think Foley isnt the right choice for right wing, i feel that he will score before the end of the season, as he has come close in most of our recent games.
On another day, some of those chances would have been put away, especially the Henry chance where he slipped over with an easy goal waiting.
MM missed the boat when a first class left back , who was on loan to Forest, was allowed to go to Fulham on loan instead of us – one Nicky Shorey!
Ward not to blame in isolation but he ball watches far too much. Comes from not having that responsibility in his years as a forward and from not being a defender.
hardly wards fault if henry had been closer to his marker !! all round performance was good, but as we have said before, ‘lacking that quality where it counts’
Report abuse
I thought we played very well for the first 40 mins and we looked good even though our possesion % was poor. Again McCarthy failed to capatilise on the 55-60 minute when the team needed changing to a more attacking formation, he left it too late for any players to have an impact. I don’t know what Henry was doing all match the first goal was down to him and Wards non exsisting marking. The second was schoolboy stuff by Berra. McCarthy is still too pig headed re the Foley/Zubar debate and whilst he is we will continue to struggle. The new guy looksa n excellent propect, but whilst we continue with this formation we will not score goals, and more imortantly win matches.
This defeat was McCarthys fault again.
Seems churlish to blame Mick completely for the defeat.
Nothing to do with the fact that 4 of Chelsea’s players (Zhirkov, Ferreira, Anelka and Drogba) cost more than our first 11 is it?
But why let facts get in the way of bashing Mick?
If you’d been at the game you’d have known the general mood was quite positive.
Keep typing your nasty comments though, gives a lot of us a laugh at how brainless some ‘fans’ are.
1 Wordsley you are right Mick is not to blame, but how about the Chief Executive who failed to acquire the two quality players that could have made all the difference? I mean just two not eight or ten,so no red herrings about Portsmouth, please.
2 I know Berra missed that header and the consequences were dire, but in my view Berra and Craddock ,otherwise ,did well against world class strikers.
Agreed. Thought MM’s tactics were spot on. Allowing Chelsea to have the ball in thier half, not rushing out to close them down and minimising the space for them to play in.. You could clearly see him from then sidelines stopping the players from doing this.
What nasty comments? It is obvious you do not read the posts properly, have another go.
I did watch the match, and it is McCarthy that picks the team and the tactics, if you think putting on three players in the 75 min is the right thing to do when the game is lost, then whose fault is it?
Foley,Zubbar are out of position, Ward is not covering the leftback slot, and Henry is not good enough. Doyle has no support, Simple
Report abuse
I disagree that this formation means we will not score goals. Can I just ask you if you think 4-4-2 (if that’s your thoughts) WOULD be better given the form Doyle is in at the moment? SEB cam on to partner him and you can see his confidence is gone!
Stating the obvious, but this WAS Chelsea we were playing. If you add to that the fact they knew beforehand that Man U had lost, it’s fair to say they were never going to make it easy for us.
Despite this, we DID have some good chances and should really have scored at least once. Unfortunately we didn’t though and although I don’t enjoy admitting it, quality shows and so it proved today. Their first goal was a simple give and go type move but it was good enough to beat our defence.
If we can maintain performances with spirit such as that till the end of the season, then I believe we CAN stay up. The performance was by no means polished (not even close), but it would also be harsh if it was described as poor as like it or not Chelsea are a good side. The league table says so.
I too was disappointed with the second goal and how it was conceded. Berra is strong but don’t underestimate Drogba’s strengh either.
Also Hahnemann has been fantastic this season for us, but he has to share blame for the second goal as he was much too far off his line and made it easier for Drogba.
I really do think if we continue to play as we are we have every chance of staying up, call me a “happy clapper” if you wish but we won’t play teams with the calibre of Chelsea every week. I’m not expecting too much change from Man U when we play them (although you never know), especially after what happened to them today.
There are though some forthcoming games which we CAN win if we apply ourselves well enough.
Keep The Faith And Believe.

What Foley Zubar debate. These are the players that are chosen at right back and right wing due to some other players not available. There is no debate on this.
Foley excellent AGAIN yesterday. The only pig headed people are the ones who refuse to see what a good job he is doing.
Foley and Ward both the weak link.
As long as Mick continues with those clowns we are destined to fall short.
Which game were you watching then – Wolves Women???
Foley is an excellent player AT RIGHT BACK. Not sure what his role is at present – He does not defend, he tries to get forward but has no eye for goal or creating a chance for someone else!!!!
I have to admit, that Foley didnt have a bad game yesterday, he had a few chances when he got forward, and got his shots on target. I still think that a more attacking player would benefit from this formation, but Foley did have a decent game yesterday. I can see him getting a goal or two if he keeps playing like that.
Team tried hard cant be faulted..The same problems continue to surface in all our losses.
1.CANT SCORE
2.UNFORGIVABLE DEFENSIVE FRAILITIES
3.PLAYING PLAYERS FROM THERE PREFERRED POSITIONS TO UNFAMILIAR POSITIONS.
Cant and wont blame players but the MANAGEMENT are sinking…so why they dont take the BULL by the horns and go for it?
We can try parking a BUS in front of GOAL and we will still CONCEDE!You only have to look at some of the GOALS conceded this season yet we continue to concede these POOR goals.
Oh well…..LOVE THE WOLVES

So the idea is to score goals and not let the opposition score…. well I’m surprised you’re not a Premier League manager with that insight
Report abuse
that was a pathetic attempt at a sarcastic remark noisy wanderer in eire is right we cannot block teams out puttin men behind the ball ward is out of his depth anyway we need to at least attack teams as doyle is a top striker he needs support as he has to come deep to try to gain possession thats why the chances we created fell to the wrong players
Report abuse
OK – sorry if my sarcasm was ill directed. However people who think we are too defensive with 4-5-1 miss the point.
1 – We made better chances than Chelsea before they scored
2 – If we let in the first goal we have to really chase the game and will not win. How many games have we won this season when we let in the first goal?
Foley contributed more than Jarvis in both attack and defense on Saturday and yet people still bang on the same old drum.
I fully agree with the points made. It’s frustrating and annoying that the same problems occur over and over again. A decent manager would rectify thse faults but MM doesn’t know how, or is too stubborn, to solve these failings.
We will all be living on our nerves until the end of the season.

Defensive errors and an inability to score I agree with.
However. Apart from Foley, who was a square peg?

Pathetic display this manager does not have a clue, bring in a good manager quick! mancini, bruce, martinez?
while i totally agree that Mick isn’t the right man for the job, you can not possibly call the players effort today a pathetic display…all of them put 100% in (barring Ward…he’s just not good enough)…I think it is direspectful of you to show blatent disregard to the effort put forward today by most of the team.
I mean come one, while we HAVE to get points at tis vitl stage of teh season…don’t tell me you actually expected to win today?
a draw would have been nice..and maybe what we deserved…but we just lack quality behind the ball in all areas of the field. School boy errors and a lack of taking chances were what led to our undoing today…however i would not call it a pathetic display AT ALL.

Saw the match live 10000Kms away and felt sorry for our lack of getting something from the game. The second goal was somehow a fault of the goalie and unfortunately, it killed the game for us.
However, looks that we are improving from match to match (except the FA cup match) and we should be winning against Bolton, Burnley and others.
Overall, was proud to be a wolves supporter.
Second goal was the fault of Hahneman!! What game were you watching? Berra was at fault not once but twice, first he let the long clearance from their keeper bounce and secondly he was unaware of where Hahneman was and actully tripped him up (as the TV replay showed on Match of the Day) while trying to go round the back of him. The first goal was more down to Henry then Ward as Henry let the Chelsea player go past him before receiving the ball and crossing to Drogba. Apart from that I thought it was one of our better displays this season, the main worry for me is our all to familar scoreline 0 again!! It is imperative that we sign a top class goalscorer to help out Doyle, no matter what Division we are in next season. Sell last years Hero SEB if we have to raise some of the cash, I’m afraid for SEB the premier division is a division too far for his talents. If we do hang onto SEB because we are back in the Championship next year then should we get promoted again we should sell him while he’s still worth something.
My dear friend, even if Berra was wrong to let the ball bounce, the keeper is on the field to KEEP the post and not being SO MUCH OFF his line. Has he been on his line, the defender could have tackled Drogba or pushed him more to the side and at least make things MORE DIFFICULT for scoring. You could see how SLOW and HEAVY is MH. That was my point and I stand by it.
Agree that it was our best performance so far.
I may not be renewing my season ticket next season but at least i stayed untill the end, cant believe how the ground emptied after 2nd goal,Jarvis was by far man of the match,Berra and Craddock way out of there depth its looking bleak now, wonder if chelsea will get fined for fielding weakened team.
“never again” – were you at the game…?? Chelsea weakened team? Berra and Cradock out of their depth?? Play like this and we will be okay. Always going to be difficult against the champions to be. If Adlene, Kev Foley or Karl Henry had scored, we could have won. Chelsea had two chances all day, what was Hanneman doing for the 2nd, Hanneman didn’t have another save to make….!! As for the game, I though we did ok, their first goal was quality & sometimes thats all that needs saying, can’t believe some clown on here tried to blame Karl Henry for it????
Though he should squared the ball to Doyle on the rebound off the Foley chance.
Their second goal was poor defending but the main culprit was Hanneman, if he stays on his line Drogba doesn’t score, but that is probably his only mistake since he has come into the team.
Overall I thought we did OK when you look at what we were playing against, their front 2 must be worth £70m!!!
Can’t believe people are on here whinging about the lads on that performance????
Same sort of performance that we have been putting in, since the Palace debicle, next week & we should get a good result, bring on Bolton, the REAL wanderers are coming to town.

I went to the match and the ground didn’t empty after the second goal you muppet, in fact the vast majority of the crowd stayed till the end and applauded the team off, clearly you had left well before then, therefore would not be aware of this!
Also how on earth did Chelsea play a weakened team, Cech, Terry, Ivanovic, Mikel, Ballack, Malouda, Anelka, Drogba are all first choice while Zhirkov, Ferreira and Joe Cole were all in the team to replace injured first teamers Ashley Cole, Lampard and Carvalho, we matched Chelsea yesterday in every way but in front of goal, it’s easy to critise the defence but they limited a world-class team to just two shots on target, unfortunately for us Cech played a perfect game!

A hard fought effort by the lads today but we are continually exposed by better quality players, some real lapses in defending and an insufficient goalscoring threat upfront.
Doyle is a really good player but why, oh why do we keep on playing high balls into him when he is up against tall defenders like Terry and Ivanovic? Why not play into his feet where he can either drop the ball off or turn the defender? Too bad we cannot borrow Drogba to plAy alongside Doyle – we would definitely stay up!!! Drogba is always a threat, love him or hate him.
The young French lad had a great first time effort which, if he could have found the back corner would have changed the game.
Now it is all a bit of a lottery in the remaining games. We are playing better but we have got to find the net to put pressure on our opponents.
COME ON YOU WOLVES!!!

Wasted opportunity as Chelsea were only playing at 60%. Love the wolves but sorry with McCarthy in charge we are doomed. Felt sorry for Ward, he is no full back and Foley is no midfielder but afraid we are stuck with the square peg round hole syndrome until the end of the season at least. Where was Milijas again, surely he would have been a better choice instead of Halford. Bolton and Burnley are must win games although it will be very tough to get anything.

Jarvis man of the match ?? i don’t think so he was totally starstruck for the whole of the first half, adlene was easily man of the match by a mile and get off wardys back he’s doing the best he can. Mick put him there it wasn’t his choice. The BIG talking point though is why no one is mentioning TERRYs deliberate elbow in the second half?????
I hate Terry and yes Terry used is elbow but did a lot of other things when ref was no where to see and if by accident on his part the ref does see he whispers in his ear but it is Terry gets away with blue murder. I agree with adlene being man of the match. He is going to be the one that is going to come up with something for us. Funny how opinions change when he was bought everybody was saying who, my motto is never comment on players until you’ve seen them play.

Don’t blame the team!
All the blame lies with the overstretched Championshiop management structure just trying to cope with being in the Premiership.
The guys are just so out of their class, that it is cruel to comment too closeley… they just should not have been put through this comparison, because all it does is exposes that the team and our structure are at least one degree below!
The lies and deceit of the 3Ms don’t really affect the overall position… we are just not good enough!
The management and their supporters have overlooked the most basic football fact, YOU HAVE TO SCORE GOALS TO WIN A GAME!
How can an ultra-defensive 451 formation score goals, except by flukes?
We have scored less goals than any other Premiership team, no wonder we are fighting for the wooden spoon!
The footballing ignorance of the Happy Clappers is beyond belief, makes me think that it’s all Jez and his dwindling band of supporters pretending to be fans.
We have the second worst goals for column at home in the COUNTRY.
WOW!!! Well done Sherlock for stating the obvious about the goals!
So would you have preferred us to go all out 4-4-2, partnering Doyle with any one of 3 of our fit strikers who have already proved they are NOT good enough to be up top with him? Sad but true.
In the meantime, Chelsea would without the extra man to help us out in the middle be ripping us to shreds, given that their midfielders are WAY better than ours at the moment.
This was CHELSEA we were playing and they DON’T give up easily, especially knowing the Man U result beforehand.
If we play like this against some of the teams we ARE more capable of beating, I have every confidence it will prove to be very effective.
If you want to see wins and goals on a regular occasion then you are supporting the wrong team in this division I’m afraid. As far as I’m concerned we have, and still ARE improving and we are NOT getting stuffed most weeks like our last foray in this league.
Make up your mind, do you want to support Wolves in this league which ISN’T going to be easy? let’s not kid ourselves here please. Or do you want to go and support another more established team for the easier ride?
If 4-5-1 is so ultra defensive, how come we have caused the best team in the league (check the table) problems? Flukes? You are REALLY disrespecting the amazing effort being put in by Doyle and the lads at the moment with a comment like that.
With performances like this one against teams of the calibre of Chelsea, my faith in the team I love is getting stronger every week, after almost being rock bottom not too long ago.

I hope but never expect from the Wolves. From all I’ve seen and heard we competed with one of the best, if not the best team in Europe.
The difference was Drogba. You can buy quality, but boy does it cost.
MM has found his team and formation. I’m hoping more and more we will stay in the PL and build on solid financial foundations to more success.

I agree Drogba was the difference between the two sides, overall we had bad luck with Cech making 2 outstanding saves. Unfortunatly I still don’t believe WARD and HENRY are good enough, lets see how we get on if only MM would leave them out. The new lad looks an outstanding player. This performance gave me some hope and and I now believe we can saty up but would like to see a new manager. CURBISHLY OR COPPEL.
We would then see some footbal and not just the long ball game.

despite the loss, we are improving, adlene is quality and seems to calm the team down.doyle brilliant again, trouble is our goalscoring chances dont come to natural goal scorers.whatever the reasons lack of signing a decent forward is causing that problem, again karl always plays the momentum wrecking pass, even a side pass can be played in front of our player not behind forcing us back towards our goal.we seem a bit better prepared for the battle nowadays though.a good performance against a quality side, spoiled by that second goal, any ball hit over 40 yards and we seem to freeze, still we are improving,if we had an attacking right midfielder instaed of a defender playingthe position that would really help and thats not knocking foley,as i said lack of signings.still think we can pull it off,
Report abuse
Todays game was against one of the best domestic teams in the world, and if not for a couple of goal-line saves Wolves could have drawn if not won the game. We must take the positive from this game. If MM and the team start to believe they can beat anyone, then there is no reason we can’t finish the season the way Birmingham started theirs. I’m flying home to watch the black and gold play Man U. and will be proud to lend my voice to all the great supporters I saw at todays game.

Karl Henry at fault for 1st goal and Berra Hanneman at fault for second.Henry was poor constantly back passing and getting caught in possesion.Stephen Ward poor showed he is just not a defender and Berra no pace and constantly caught out of position.Drop Berra play Zubar in the centre with Craddock play Foley as RB and Elokobi or Friend at LB and Stephen Ward on the Left wing and Jarvis on the right and it would give a better balance.

Listen I don’t like Foley there either, but McCarthy does & he has finally started to stop medling with the team, you are proposing that he makes 5 changes to, in your opinion, improve one position, that probably why your not nor ever will be involed in football at any level!!!
Why when we lose does everyone blame Karl Henry???
Yesterday he was playing against Mikel & Ballack……..combined value £30 m???? I don’t know but whatever it is would probably be more than our whole team.
If we had 11 Karl Henry’s or 11 with his attitude we would be alot further up the league.
I thought he was superb yesterday.
Oh yeah & I ain’t a happy clapper/loser, just realistic & balanced in my views & if we are poor next week, I’ll on ranting & raving with the rest of you, coz the way we are playing at th moment we should get a result at Bolton & it’s these games that are massive, not the ones against the glamour teams like yesterday.

Top post Grace, liking the positivity! People do seem to confuse supporting your team with ‘Happy Clapping’, if only we had more fans like you!!

Since we started playing 4-5-1 we have started picking more points up
At home to Liverpool drew 0-0
Away to Hull drew 2-2
Away to Brum lost 2-1
Home to Spurs won 1-0
Home to Chelsea lost 2-0
Thats 5 points from 5 tricky games, admittedly I think we should have gone for 4-4-2 at Hull but at least we battled for a point.
I dont think its the formation which is causing us to not score so many goals, more like the players in formation, for instance Kevin Doyle, who is supposedly a lone striker, is constantly having to work the channels instead of getting the service he deserves. Maybe drop Zubar, put Foley at RB, and when Kightly and Keogh are fit, put one of them on the right, and Doyle wont need to work the channels as much and we should score more goals

Good point mate.
I think you may even see Keogh on the bench next week for that very reason.
I ain’t saying he’s the answer to our prayers, but at leat he gives us a more attacking option down the right.
absolutely spot on Brummie Wolf.
never thought id say it but its an exciting propsect having keogh back in the mix. i think he will thrive in the new formation and will undoubtedyl serve up more opportunity for Doyle.
Adlene is also looking the business… thats 3 out of 3 so far. who would have thought a team that gets hammered in the belgian league would have a player like this on their books.
Doyle, yet again imperious (thanks bro) he and Jarvis are the spark in our team and if we can somehow stay up THAT FAT FAT EFFER MOXEY and CHURCH MOUSE MORGAN need to dust off their wallets and bring in some bloody support.
Today we all support Villa and Spurs.
WE ARE WOLVES !!

Wolves deserved a point for their efforts and the chances created.
Back four just not good enough at this level.

Did someone really just suggest bringing in Mancini as manager? Jesus wept…

Well what did we expect? Well done to all the lads except the one from Bohemians, you had the rich city slickers worried today. Well let’s draw a line under this and focus on Bolton. Mick of course has a dilemma but with Keogh still not match fit I wonder if he can expect Doyley to graft away again up front I think he will, better than playing useless, slow and overweight SEB!
Fight, fight wherever you may be.

P.S. Come on the Villa (well today at least).

Now we are getting desparate.

there is hope with luck we will stay up.how a team changes.is keogh the answer maybe not but we do need all the fit players and the headless chickens we have.

We played against the best team in the league and we did so with credit. No one would have denied us a draw had we got it. Chelsea will be champions and if we can maintain performances like that, we may well stay up.

When we won the Championship it wasn`t clear cut.We relied heavily on other teams scores and luckly it all came together at the end.
We still had Wolves fans bleating right up to the end even then. Now we`ve moved up a peg, playing reasonable football with what team we have (And it`s a good team!) we still have to many fans bleating. We knew it would be hard and Micks goal of finishing 17th is a very good and realistic one.
We`re learning all the time,we were definatly not played off the field yesterday.
As for not spending too much___ON What? A Player from the top 6?—having a laugh,as if anyone would sign with the chance of being Championship next season.
Wolves have gone from strength to strength under Mick (and wobbled a few times)He does what he sees is best for the club/team But at the end of the day he`s YES he`s got us to where we are now.
Wolves until i die (Premire or Championship!) (Wouldn`t it be good to be playing the Baggies again in the Prem!)

I love coming on here on a Sunday to read the variety of comments made on the match!
Week after week i read a load of abusive rubbish mostly – and yes sometimes on my long drive home after the match, i am not happy about how we played or the end result. But what i saw yesterday was 20,000+ fans getting behind their team and showing their support.
There was a fantastic atmosphere and in my humble view, we were unlucky not to get anything out of the game. The team of late are a different team from a few weeks ago and we are at least having a bloody good go!
To all the people who slag the management off week in week out – try and have a little respect. We didn’t sign more players in the window mostly because no-one wanted to come to the Wolves – not for lack of trying. The players we have got are doing their best – maybe if we can manage to stay up we will have a better chance of signing more.
Wolves – i applaud you all

nos 26 and 27 Walt and Poppin. Are you sure you guys are not from Disney Land? I can only think you were not around when we failed last time in 2003/4.Last time we were told the money was not available, this time we are told money is available but the players for some reason won’t come ,probably down to financial not footballing reasons. We the fans will probably never know the real reasons. One thing is for sure if we fail it will be one hell of a wasted opportunity.Mick in my view is doing well, but just think how mich better he would do with two more in the Doyle class.

Poppin,Do you really believe that garbage
. We didn’t sign more players in the window mostly because no-one wanted to come to the Wolves – not for lack of trying.
Other than wasting the entire window chasing a player we had no chance of signing just exactly who were the players that turned us down?
Cline–Fair play to the lad did not want to sit on the bench.
Robbie Keane-Ha Ha more spin from the king of spin Moxey. If we had really gone for him then in my opinion he would rather have stayed in the prem than move 2 the 2 team joker league.
Just wonder if any of the older readers remember the summer of 1980( i think) WOLVES TO SIGN PLATINI Screamed the headlines from the media,At the time probably the worlds greatest player.Did we sign him?.
Of the eleven signings made for this season HOW MANY are getting a game on a regular basis(Answers on a stamp).
Basically the team is performing better of late but the same old failings still exist,Lack of goals, schoolboy defending.
Bolton is a massive game now, always been one of our bogey teams, with 5 of the next 7 fixtures away from home March looks like being the month our destiny will be decided.

Malta: Unfortunately I am old enough to remember that time.John Barnwell was the manager and we had just sold Steve Daley for a ridiculous sum to Manchester City.We bought Andy Gray and Dave Thomas[then Englands Left Winger] and stole Emlyn Hughes from Liverpool it was on, that Platini would sign as well.Oh for the same commitment from the present bunch of losers. Before the H C’s start just work out exactly how much Morgan has really spent.I would say that he hasnt covered half of the Premier pay out yet, forget the 30 million pledge.
Malta, I think it was 1979,before we signed Andy Gray.John Barnwell once told me he had a scout who lived for a week in Boniek’s flat in Poland but we still failed to sign him. Then we had Peter Reid in our dugout at Norwich before he signed for Everton. And of course Ronnie Allen came close to the best signing ever,£5K plus Terry Wharton for Frannie Lee,before John Ireland told hom to stay in’smokey old Bolton’.This is all good stuff to our bean counter Moxey though,he will argue you see Wolves have always had problems attracting good players.Best to remind him we did once sign the likes of Dougan, Wagstaffe and Bailey.
Well said Poppin. Don’t know what the other posts are really saying in reply…like you said “no-one wanted to come to Wolves”. We won’t know every player that was approached. The crowd was magnificent. My wife’s third game (all of them this season) and she loved it. The ‘songs for J Terry’ were fantastic – does he really have a relationship with the ref? Unlucky not to get anything out of the game but carry on trying and it may be enough for survival. Thought Bia’s few moments were more positive than the whole of his Palace catastrophe.

There are 2 simple reasons we failed to take anything from the game.
1. Absolute shocking defensive errors AGAIN for both goals.
2. We didn’t put our chances away AGAIN.
Now, the 2 simple reasons for the above are
1. Persisting with an out of position Ward at left back. Did anyone see Ward totally lose Drogba even though Drogba was never further than 3 yards away for the whole of the build up play for the first goal? His lack of defensive awareness must cost us 7 in every 10 goals we concede.
2. When you play 8 or 9 basically defenders/defensive midfielders out of your starting 11, more chances wil drop to these players….who ultimately are not finishers. It’s hard enough for seasoned centre forwards to take their fair share of chances in the Prem, but you shouldn’t expect the likes of Foley, Berra, Henry to finish a high percentage of the odd chances that falls their way.
Both reasons SHOULD and COULD have been addressed by the management in the summer and January, yet the management decided against this yet still constantly bemoan these basic fundamentles in every post match interview.
Ok, isn’t it time to play Zubar at Centre Half alongside Craddock, and Foley at right back. Foley was NOT excellent, he was distinctly average. The problem is with him, he can’t make a pass to save his life and gets in good positions then has no idea what to do with the ball.
Berra was awful. I think Zubar would make a great centre half and I know Foley is a great right back.
Ward was also awful, but of course, he always has been at left back. No problems with him going forward but he cant defend at all. He’s nearly always out of position.
come on McCarthy, its blindingly obvious to the majority of us, so sort it out!
Harsh, V Harsh
I agree Berra should have attacked the ball for their 2nd, but who was covering him??, Craddock should have dropped off him. And what was Hanneman doing that far off his line??
Would you trust Zubar in the middle???
To error prone for me & Foley doesn’t have the pace to play full back in this divison.
As for Ward, what did he do wrong on Saturday??
Grace,Ward allowed Drogba to get in front of him to score the first goal,Ball watching.
Sorry mate have to agree with Richwolf Ward is simply not a premiership LB.
you’ll see what Ward did wrong on Saturday if you watch a replay of the first goal. Don’t follow the ball but instead watch how he didn’t track Drogba during the whole of the build up….it was defending of Sunday league standard from Ward !!
Yes ward did let drogba go.
But look at the whole move, from the time cech rolled the ball out.
We didn’t squeeze Chelsea at anytime, giving them far too much space.
Unfortunately the quality of their players means they’re more likely to take advantage of this type of opportunity and thats what they did.
Having said that, from what I’ve seen and heard, we really did dominate and restrict the champions elect for the vast majority of the match.
Sorry Guys
I disagree, what would you have him do, rugby tackle him on the line???
Get real, it was just a well worked goal by top players.
oh dear Grace, your technical knowledge of the game is sadly lacking if you believe Ward was not at fault for that goal.
Yes, the build up play was decent, and yes, we didn’t press them enough on the ball, but any left back in any league worth his salt would have easily seen off the danger and cut out that cross. Wardy didn’t even make Drogba work to lose him.
Dave1974
Technical knowledge???
What qualifies you to judge me???
Drogba made his run from deep, how exactly would you like Ward to make him ‘work’????
Clueless
Stop whinging for the sake of it.
Walden, you are right look at the whole move. The problem started with Foley being out of position on the left taking the ball from two Jarvis throws, before Jarvis sent in a hit and hope cross, which Cech took with ease and then made a good throw to I think Ballack,Chelsea then exploited the space on our right where Foley should have been. I didn’t work that out,but Josh a member of my family and a South Banker did.NB The South Bank were great on Saturday, good humour and excellent support in the second half.
I’m just glad you don’t pick the team. Zubar at centre half?

Centre back is actually Zubars recognised position,Champions league experienced CB with his previous club Marsaille.

One paragraph is needed, if we play like that for the rest of the season we will be staying up. 4 points from the Spuds and pool then made Chelsea look very average for most of the game. To renew or not to review that is the question???
our staying up depends on pompey’ hull and burnley continuing to implode. the sqad that mad mick has assembled not good enough to compete in this league. goood team spirit, andcommittment, but more needed in this circus. Now shall i early bird or not?

Wanderer.
I don’t get what you mean “not good enough to compete in this league”.
We restricted Chelsea (repeat Chelsea, the ones at the top of the league, through to knockout phases of champions league) to 2 shots on target. We’ve beaten Spurs (now 4th place in league who’ve put 12 past Wigan) and thoroughly deserved a draw against Liverpool. All in the last month or so.
I call that competing.
Oh, you forgot to mention Bolton and Sunderland in your imploding list.

Wanderer you are spot on.The players are doing their best, unfortunately IMO it wont be good enough. The people running this club are not up to the job and for that reason I will not be renewing my early bird.Dont be fooled by Morgans ” we dont want to do a Portsmouth” .Just look at what has happened at Stoke to see what a well run club can achieve.

Page 70 in today’s Daily Mail with a review of key facts from Prem games over last weekend says. “Best Passer (in the division) Karl Henry. 34 passes, completed 94%.” And that was while up against Chelsea’s midfield. Well done skipper. Keep it going.
94% completion of passes, backwards and sideways in his own half.
Sorry, but I’d rather have for example, James Milners’ stats whose completion rate was obviously not up to Henrys standard but set up 3 goals yesterday.
Maybe Milijas could be our Milner !

spot on old boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Henry must have had a video of Ray Wilkins in his playing days – they called him the “crab” has his passing and movements were sidewys and backwards!!!
Look at the stats on the WWFC web pages – Henry 25 appearances – 7 Shots!!
That says it all!! We need a captain who show passion, committment and leadership!!

where is he now? played total out of position

If by muppet you mean the man who got us to the Premier League and has got us in with a decent shout of staying there – then maybe you’re right, he could well go in the Summer regardless of what happens. SM might want his own man in there.
One question – would you call MM a muppet to his face? If so, let us know when you’re heading up to Compton to do the deed and I’ll come up and have a look at what happens.
A classic comment at the death Walden Wolf. Yes MM is stubborn, has certainly made some bad signings on his limited budgets but you would back him in the trenches. He is not going to be sacked this season, so we need to get behind the team!
We still have a great chance of staying up in what is a very poor division. Chelsea were not great and likewise Villa, Liverpool and Spurs.
This team reminds me the the guy operating a large power press at a well known car factory. Firstly he decides to wedge open the safety gate, shortly afterwards he finds his left hand severed at the wrist and promptly reaches in with his right hand to retrieve it….absolutely true, I swear !!
In mitigation, it was a lousy repititious job in which he had to concentrate for eight hours a day, five days a week for a tenner per hour.
By comparrison, this lot through crass naivety (simple and lacking sophistication) fail to concentrate for ninety minutes once a week AND for a lot more than a tenner. Had Drogba been a power press he would have chopped off the hands of at least two players for his second goal. The Management and the coaching staff along with all the players are fully culpable in allowing the gates to be continually open and unless a much stricter regime is quickly put in place, disaster is frankly inevitable.
I thought Wolves did very well against the probable champions of England. We have a fraction of the resources Chelsea have and people have to take their head out the clouds and realise that we are not in the same league as these guys.
We missed some chances mainly because their goalkeeper is so darn good.
The difference was the finishing touches at the end of the day and thats the difference between a lot of the Premier teams.
Well done Wolves, great performance, shame about the result but keep that up and we could stay up! Wish we had a Drogba. The only thing he did was score twice. Great.
I agree with all you have said but….
If Chelsea had played at full capacity instead of at 60% we could have lost heaviloy with our defence!
When did you last see a team in the Prem give the away side so much time and space in midfield , if your not sure this is right check out MOD and it is highlighted by the guys at the end of the match. Ballack was given the freedom of Molineux and we had a 5 man midfield!!
QUESTION – When playing one up front on their own, why does the lone srtiker have to come back to the halfway line to get the ball in open play?
Answers on a postcard to MM at the Custard Bowl.
Walden Wolf – I cant see Mick going in the Summer, who else is better to get us back up again if we go down, and if we stay up he’s done very well so will keep his job. Rightly so in both cases I feel.
Besides I am yet to see anything to make me feel Morgan cares about our club. He tried to buy Liverpool and when it didnt work he bought Wolves. I am a bit scepticle about staff and owners who are at one club and then switch to another, makes you think loyalties are non existant and they see the role as just a job. See Moxey at Stoke and now with Wolves……..its just a job isnt it Jez?
Of course it’s just a job – and don’t forget to include the players in your scenario. And sadly isn’t that true of life in general for those who are lucky to be in work – it’s just a job – if something better comes up, go for it. Loyalty? Steve Bull was a one-off.
We played well and certainly had the better chances but the class of Drogba shone through in the end. Let’s put thing in perspective, Chelsea’s reserve full back, Zhirkov, cost more than our whole team.
We have no real choice but to persevere with this formation. Edwards and Keogh are hopefully back shortly and are ideal for the 4-5-1. If we are bringing a forward off the bench it currently has to be Vokes, as Sylvan’s confidence is shot!

If Mick is here in the Summer then I am definately gone. ~I dont believe micks done a good job at all. He’s had plenty of money and support and he has spent badly. We got up on pure luck last season. From Christmas onwards we were absolute rubbish. This year has been the same.
The manager has not got a clue what his best team is. This team will stay the same now until we lose a few, and then he’ll change it all again.
McCarthy is one of the worst managers in the premiership and is way out of his depth at this level.

I agree. Look at the squad -
Is Surman better than we already had? NO
Is Zuber better than we already had? NO
Is Milijas better than Jones? NO
Is Maeirhoffer better than E Banks? NO
Is Castillo better than Henry? NO
Is Halford better than Foley, Keogh, Kights,Edwards? NO
MONEY WASTED ON FEES AND WAGES. LOOK AT THE STATS -
Maerhoffer – 1 Start
Surman – 3 Starts
Castillo – 7 Starts
Halford – 12 Starts
Milijas – Cannot last 90 mins most matches.
Most of these appearances are due to injuries or the Man Utd debacle!!
I REST MY CASE!

Surman is clearly one for the future, and i dont think Mccarthy bought him thinking otherwise.
If Zubar is not better, hes as good as, which makes our squad a bit stronger in case of injuries.
Milijas on his day is better than most of our players, and has helped win us games. He needs to be more consistent though.
Maeirhoffer offers us something that Ebanks Blake doesnt.
I dont know what has happened to Castillo.
Halford hasnt been as good as what we already have, but offers the long throw, which may still come in handy if he plays. We have got results from using his long throw.

Played really well until the second goal. Our major problem is a lack of goals and attacking options. We had several good chances to score and didnt take them. The problem with playing non attack minded players like foley on the wings is that the best chances often fall to them, and they either dont anticipate it or finish poorly. We are set up not to let a goal in, but once we do, we are very vulnerable to the counter attack and it could have been 3 or 4 nil in the end. Berra and craddock struggle with really physical strikers like altidore, jason roberts and Drogba and are too easily brushed aside. I think we will have to score maybe one than one goal to beat the likes of bolton and cant see where a goal is coming from
Report abuse
I can see where the next goal may come from….Guediuora.
He’s been close a few times now and the law of averages says he will hit one past a keeper soon.
Up The Wolves.

His volley was fantastic and on another day may have gone in. If he carries on playing like this, he will score, and will win his contract.

Good performance against Chelsea.
We just need to start scoring more goals, Doyle will not be able to score goals when he is up front by his self. Yes he works hard in games, but we need someone else up there to be able to put the chances away that he creates.
Doyle and Maierhofer should have a chance up front together because I actually think that would work well.
Halford has gotta start on the right instead of Foley because he offers more e.g. Long throws!
Come on lads lets beat Bolton on Saturday with the same high-tempo performance.
Adlene Guedioura is a quality player and we need to sign him on a permanent deal.
WE ARE WOLVES!!
Foley actually had a decent game IMO. If we are going to play Halford just for his long throws we may as well pack up and all go home. For the short time Halford was on the pitch he got done for pace, he gave the ball away and had to be warned by the referee to calm down after one reckless challenge.
He should be out on loan to Peterboro.
Some posters having a go at Hanahman for his part in the Berra Drogba fiasco, but if you look carefully Berra actually trips him and stops him attempting to dive at the feet of Drogba. I must admit I didn’t see it on Saturday and only picked it up on the TV replays.
If we had put just one of those chances away we could well have picked up a point. Fortunately the others got a clobbering and watch out for Sunderland still falling like a stone….that last match of the season might be quite interesting !
Ok, fair enough.
I haven’t had chance to see any replays, but if that’s what did happen then I hold my hands up for part-blaming Hahnemann.
On a different subject, is it just me or does anyone else think we should have loaned SEB out for a bit and not Iwelumo. He DEFINITELY needs the goals to flow to regain his confidence again.
Hahnemann did not have one save to make, he only touched the ball to take it out of the net twice (besides backpasses). Cech on the other hand was very busy. Wolves 7 chances = no goals.
Chelsea 2 chances = 2 goals.
If we do not improve in front of goal then it is going to be very hard to survive in this league.
Foley needs to go back to right back – Zubar to drop out. Replace Foley with Milijas so we have
Guedioura – Jones – Henry – Milijas – Jarvis in the middle of the park.
4 – 5 – 1 formation is working as the results show!
Ward does not look 100% fit to me – he has had some poor games recently – who do we replace him with?
We made Chelsea look average, we created enough chances to win, we played good, fast ball when in possession and the lads showed they are not afraid of so called world-class teams. Looking good for Premiership football next year I’d say. Well done lads – players AND the manager – the stability in the team selection is paying dividends – like so many of us armchair-managers have been saying for weeks :-) Gutted that our two best chances went straight down Cech’s throat – on any other day ‘though…….. Keep it up!
One life, one club. Come on you Wolves!
Playing well doesn’t win matches.Scoring one end and not conceding the other end does.We are not very good at either end no matter how good the quality in the middle of the park. The system played and the players playing don’t allow either for too many defensive lapses or goal chances to be sqandered.

Great weekend following our “expected result”.
All around us lost, Blues lost and our friends, the Steptoe family from Sandwell, got clobbered by BIG CHRIS!! What more can you ask for???

Cant quite believe some of the comments on here today. This was Chelsea we were playing and not Crystal Palace!!!!!!
I was along with many others ready to hang myself after that Palace game but what a difference a couple of changes has made.
Most important are the inclusion of Jones and Guedioura they at least put players under pressure, pass the ball on the floor rather than try and keep it up in the air for some Guiness World Record. The play is positive and the new kid is certainly good. And dont we look more composed in Midfield with out the wild hacking feet of Mancienne.
Against another team we could have won and I think between now and the end of the season theres 4 wins to be had on that performance.
There first goal was class and had we scored everyone here would be saying what a superb move it was. The second was crap!! what more can you say but beyond that the two center backs did a pretty good job of stifling a Class pair of Drogba and Anelka.
Would love to see how Mijas could be fused into midfield, but who would you drop?? Henry!!!, Perhaps squeeze Jones and french G into the Keep Jarvis on the Left Foley or Surman (as we have nobody else) on the right and put Mijas in behind Doyle.
I cant wait to see Keogh back as he creates space by running into the channels but again who would you drop.
Its great being an armchair manager Im off now to play FIFA
Up the Wolves another day and we will win.
