Albion star denies nightclub assaults

West Bromwich Albion footballer Joe Mattock has denied allegations that he assaulted two men and two women at a nightclub.

The 19-year-old defender pleaded not guilty to three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one of assault by beating when he appeared before Leicester Crown Court yesterday. He also denies attempting to pervert the course of justice by contacting a witness and offering money to one of the victims.

Mattock, an under-21 England international, will now face a trial in August.

The charges relate to an alleged incident at the Liquid Envy nightclub in Church Gate, Leicester, on August 30 last year, the day after Albion drew a Championship game at Sheffield United.

Mattock was not arrested at the scene of the alleged assault, but walked into a police station in the city the following Tuesday.

Former Leicester City player, Mattock, of Grove Road in Leicester, was wearing a white shirt, no tie and a dark grey suit, spoke only to confirm his name and plead not guilty to all charges.

He was granted unconditional bail until a trial at Leicester Crown Court on August 2.

Mattock, who has been capped five times by England Under-21s, joined Albion for an undisclosed fee thought to be around £1 million in August 2009.

Mattock, a left-back who can also play in midfield, penned a three-year contract, plus an extra year’s option in the club’s favour.

He made his professional bow for previous club Leicester at the tender age of 16, coming on as a second-half sub against Norwich at the Walkers Stadium in April 2007.

The Leicester-born player, who has also represented England at Under-15, 16, 17 and 19 levels, established himself in the Foxes line-up the following campaign, making 33 appearances.

Mattock also played a key role in the Foxes’ League One title success during 2008-09, making 36 appearances and scoring his first-ever senior goal in a 2-0 win at Yeovil in January.

In total, Mattock played 73 times for Leicester, including 12 appearances as a sub, scoring once.

He played in Roberto Di Matteo’s side for Tuesday’s 1-1 draw away at Cardiff City and was expected to resume training as normal ahead of this Sunday’s away trip to Bristol City.

An Albion statement following the charges last September said it would be inappropriate to comment.

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
