Berra looking for Molineux cheer
Wednesday 10th February 2010, 12:43PM GMT.
Christophe Berra admits it’s high time Wolves gave their Molineux regulars something to cheer.
Not since Kevin Doyle struck against Burnley on December 20 have Wolves found the net in front of their own supporters – some 310 minutes of football ago.
And after blanks against Liverpool, Manchester City and Wigan either side of the turn of the year at Molineux, Scotland international Berra says goals are overdue, starting with Tottenham tonight.
“We need to give the Molineux crowd something to cheer,” said Berra.
“We’ve got a good record away from home, it was just disappointing we got beat on Sunday.”
Berra believes Wolves have a better chance of scoring playing 4-5-1, which has brought Mick McCarthy’s side two draws, a defeat three goals scored and four conceded in the three Premier League it has been used in so far.
“We’ve created more chances in the new system than in previous games,” he said.
“We’ve done well, we changed it a little bit in the second half against Birmingham and caused them problems but we were just unlucky.
“Now we have Tottenham at home. We have to pick ourselves up for that, we’ve beaten them once already this season so now we must do it again.”
Utter dejection was written all over Wolves’ players faces at the final whistle at St Andrew’s after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat when Kevin Phillips came off the bench to score two goals.
But Berra insisted Wolves have recovered from the blow and will be ready for Spurs tonight.
“We know we’re at the bottom and fighting relegation,” he said.
“We’ve had to deal with it and we’ve been playing well.
“Don’t worry. We’ll be ready for Tottenham.”
And the 25-year-old stopper believes Wolves will clinch Premier League survival.
“There’s no point (thinking we can’t stay up). If we’d won on Sunday we’d have gone 14th,” he said.
“There are six or seven teams involved down there and it will go right down to the end of the season.
“We’ve got to play a lot of teams in and around us, and hopefully in those we can get maximum points.”
Berra admitted Wolves defended poorly for the Blues goals.
“It was a disappointing result,” he said. “We did poorly for the goals and we also have to learn to take our chances.
“Now we have to pick ourselves up.
“We’ve played well in the last couple of league games.
“After the first 10-15 minutes against Blues we came into our own and were the better team.”
Fellow defender Jody Craddock admits: “We just have to bounce back quickly”.
“We have to bounce back, it’s as simple as that,” he said.
“We watched small parts of the video yesterday and we have to do better.
“Sunday’s game and the mistakes has to go behind us now and we have to look forwards.
“We’re preparing for what is a big game for us.
“We know we have to win games and we want to win every one.
“We’re going to go out there and give 100 per cent – every single player is going to be busting a gut.”
