No room to lick wounds for Wolves

Defender Stephen Ward has insisted Wolves have no room to lick their wounds after admitting avoiding defeat against Tottenham is vital.

Sunday’s 2-1 defeat against Birmingham left Mick McCarthy’s side second bottom and a point from safety with 14 games left.

Ward has no doubts Wolves can achieve their survival aim, but feels a draw or a win is imperative against Spurs tomorrow.

He said: “You can’t feel sorry for yourselves in this game, we have to dust ourselves down and hopefully get three points because they’re needed badly now.

“I think it’s a good thing that we’ve got a game so quickly, but we’ll have to be right at it.”

Mick McCarthy’s men are gunning for their first Premier League double, after upsetting the applecart with a surprise 1-0 win at White Hart Lane in December.

With Hull drawing with Chelsea and beating Manchester City in the last week, Ward believes Wolves can do something similarly special before they sign off for a 10-day break.

He said: “We did it down there when we beat them in one of our best performances of the season and we’ll be looking to do that on our home patch.

“It’s vital we get something from the game, because we’ve got a 10-day break so the Spurs match becomes a massive one now.

“The boys will fight right to the end and we’ll give everything to get that result tomorrow.”

McCarthy reckoned the players looked as low as he had seen them this season on Sunday.

But Ward insists the setback has not affected their belief to stay in the Premier League.

He said: “Of course we feel we can stay up. We should have beaten Birmingham, which would have moved us up the table quite a bit.

“It’s amazing what one win can do – we just have to make sure we get that one win because there are definitely points for us to take from games.”
