Harriers boss must wheel and deal

Kidderminster Harriers manager Steve Burr will have to wheel and deal to bring any further players into Aggborough – but is happy with his squad.

Burr has brought in one player and let two defenders leave on loan since taking charge just under three weeks ago, and has now had some chance to assess the playing squad.

Winger Marc Goodfellow remains his only signing after joining from Burton Albion on loan for the rest of the season, and that was mainly funded by loaning out Liam Dolman to Corby and allowing young Zac Costello join Evesham for a month.

It was a decision that was partly enforced, as a wide man was needed with David McDermott only just on the comeback trail after illness and Kyle Hadley struggling with a hernia problem.

The budget has also allowed room for the manager to extend the loan of Damian Spencer from Kettering for a third month but, especially after bringing Tim Flowers in as goalkeeping coach, money istight at Aggborough.

Burr said: “The budget is pretty much tied up at the moment, we were able to move things around a bit which at the moment is what I am having to do.

“I am not actively looking to do that again, as a manager I am always on the lookout for players who can improve the squad but I have been very pleased with the lads I have here since I came to the club.

“I am not going to make changes for the sake of it.”

The Harriers boss was delighted with the impact of his sole signing Goodfellow, who made his debut in a goalless draw at Oxford United last time out and is set to keep his place for Saturday’s visit of Forest Green.

Burr said: “It was his first game for a while, because he hasn’t had a lot of football at Burton, but Mark will be a good addition to us without question. He was the sort of player I was looking to bring in to improve things, in an area where we have been depleted.

“It’s early days, but the signs so far is that he will bring a lot to the team.”

In the old days it would have been “madam” – but now it’s more likely to be “babe (or round these parts ‘bab’)”, “love”, “duck” or “chick/chuck”, writes Louise Jew.
