Villa hit back at Tottenham jibes
Monday 8th February 2010, 11:26AM GMT.
Villa’s dressing room have hit back at Tottenham supporters’ ‘boring’ jibe by insisting – ‘You play more long ball than anyone.’
Martin O’Neill’s men were subjected to chants of “boring, boring Villa” from the White Hart Lane crowd during Saturday’s goalless draw, after spending much of the game on the back foot against an impressive Spurs side.
It came just 10 days after Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger had accused the claret and blues of being a “long ball team” – but Villa’s ex-Tottenham defender Luke Young and goalkeeper Brad Friedel have both dismissed the taunts.
Young even insisted his former club play more long ball than anyone they have come across all season.
He said: “I think they played more long balls than anyone I’ve played against this season with the balls upto Peter Crouch. It doesn’t really bother us how we win our points. We know we’re not a boring side with the likes of Ashley Young, Stewart Downing, James Milner and Gabby Agbonlahor.
“I think it was just frustration from the home fans.”
Spurs had 28 attempts to Villa’s 10 as they bombarded the claret and blue box – only to be frustrated by the visitors’ stubborn defence.
Friedel said: “It’s funny, I thought in the game it was quite strange because a lot of their attacks came from long balls up to ‘Crouchy’ that was headed down to Jermain Defoe.
“I’m not quite sure where they were coming from, it’s just a bit of banter among the fans I’m guessing. I take zero notice of it. I had a little chuckle because most of their attacks where they got some joy from came from clipping balls into Crouchy that were longer than 30 or 40 yards.
“We’re playing away from home, they want their team to win so they’re going to try to do things to get us off our game, I think that’s about as far as you can take it.”
Villa are now sweating on the fitness of Emile Heskey ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Manchester United, after the striker limped off just 21 minutes into the stalemate.
Boss Martin O’Neill added: “He’s had a recurrence of his groin problem. When I spoke to him after the game he was feeling better than he did when he came off.”

Two things:
1. A team can be attacking by playing long balls.
2. By labelling Villa boring I dont think anyone is saying Villa are one dimensional as commented by Wenger – just that they are boring as they didn’t attack against Tottenham at all.

Why do the papers and above say spurs had 28 efforts on goal this is simply not the case they had 5 on target and 10 off
Report abuse
Actually Spurs had 29 attempts on goal 11 were on target Villa had 6 attempts 4 on target

Actually Gary you will find that both Sky & the Sun agree with the 5 & 10 so get your facts right, a hoof upfield does not constitute an effort on goal……….. idiot!

sorry garry but get out of here and get a clue!! why dont you come back to me/us when you have beaten one of the top four(let alone 3!!)….. will be waiting a while then!! lmao

5 shots on target..5 shots off target..away from home…me thinks that constitutes some attacking intent!!

The so called bigger clubs (though why Spurs think they come into that catagory is questionable) are all the same, from board level to the to the fans to the tea lady, if things dont go their way, they will blame anyone or anything, but not their own inability. Now THAT IS boring

We didn’t say they were Long Ball we said they were BORING and guess what? They ARE BORING!!!! How they managed to get 2pts from the two games with Spurs I will never know, or is it because they are built to just defend and maybe score a counter attack? BORING!!!!!

Touched a nerve hey. No hard feelings – well done on acheiving the 0-0 you came to ‘play’ for.

We have a great defence but Milner is carrying the centre midfield just as Barry did before him. if he does not play well we perform like we did against spurs.
Petrov is so easy to play against, he only passes the ball backwards or sidewards and lets opposing midfielders run off him all day long. I’d fancy playing against petrov and i’m a 40yo sunday league player!!!

We said Villa were boring in that they came and parked the bus but they interpreted that as being labelled a long ball team..Crazy how this long ball talk from Wenger touched a raw nerve. Now I begin to wonder!!!!!COYS
