Plymouth 0 Albion 1
Saturday 6th February 2010, 5:20PM GMT.
Simon Cox’s eighth goal of the season ensured Roberto Di Matteo’s team-change gamble paid off for 10-man Albion at Home Park.
The Baggies head coach made four changes from the side that had started the last five matches and stayed unbeaten.
Cox – one of the men brought in – struck the only goal of a bad-tempered game on 66 minutes to keep his side in the Championship’s top two.
A rare penalty miss from Graham Dorrans with seven minutes remaining ensured a nervous ending for the visitors, but they held firm despite losing Jerome Thomas in stoppage time to a red card for a foul on David McNamee.
Abdoulaye Meite and Gabriel Tamas also performed well at the heart of defence, after Di Matteo sprang a surprise by resting Jonas Olsson.
One change was enforced for Albion with Joe Mattock replacing the injured Marek Cech but there were three more with Meite, Cox and Gianni Zuiverloon in for Olsson, Gonzalo Jara and Robert Koren.
The Baggies held a slight first-half edge, but both sides found the going tough on the horrid surface.
Albion defender Tamas had to make a crucial interception to block a sixth-minute effort from Alan Judge and then headed wide at the other end from a Graham Dorrans corner.
But the game lacked spark until the final 15 minutes of the half, when both sides began to look more threatening.
Dorrans found himself in a shooting position on the edge of the Plymouth box, but fired too close to goalkeeper David Stockdale.
The visitors had the best chance of the half on 36 minutes when Cox released Roman Bednar, who skipped past Gary Sawyer into the box but was denied by a smart low save from Stockdale.
Tamas came to Albion’s rescue again a minute later when Jamie Mackie ran behind Meite but was tackled well by the defender, as Plymouth’s penalty appeals were waved away by referee Steve Tanner.
The second-half almost began in the perfect fashion for Albion, as Cox got the better of McNamee on the left flank and fired in a cross but Roman Bednar could not turn it in.
Dorrans and Mackie both fired wide for their respective teams before a tackle by Mattock caused a flare-up that livened up the action.
The full-back lunged in on Damien Johnson, McNamee retaliated and all 22 players became involved in a shoving match but Mattock escaped with a yellow card.
Mackie had a shot blocked by Chris Brunt moments, before Albion struck their decisive blow.
Thomas collected a pass wide on the right, Bednar competed with Sawyer at the far post for his inswinging cross and the ball sat up for Cox to lash home an emphatic half-volley.
Albion were then awarded a spot-kick late on when substitute Luke Moore was tripped just inside the box by McNamee, but Dorrans put his effort too close to Stockdale and the goalkeeper saved.
Thomas received his marching orders in stoppage time after lunging at McNamee and the referee reached straight for his red card.
The challenge, close to the touchline, sparked another melee with substitutes and coaching staff involved.

I think I can see why Roberto needs lots of wingers. Good win though in spite of Damien Johnson stirring it all up. Can’t wait to read what Jarrod and Terry say about this one.

So JT got sent off, he will miss 3 games, Scunthorpe Reading (cup) and Cardiff so its not too bad it looks like slory may have to prove himself.
PS did i see a good luke moore performance?
Report abuse
I may be wrong on this…can’t remember exactly how its interpreted…. but i think you only get a 3 game ban for violent conduct (think Carson against Cardiff or Thomas’s against Arsenal in Carling cup)and not for late tackles. The bit i’m unsure of is when certain tackles can be conscrewed as “violent” – i think it depends on what the ref puts in his report. I’m sure some more informed than me blogger on here will put us right!
Report abuse
He should only have a 2 game ban but due to his second red of the season it is 3 games
Report abuse
He will get a 4 game ban due to it being his 2nd Red Card of the season. It is unfortunately an automatic 3 game ban for a straight red card (1 game for 2 yellows and preventing an obvious goal-scoring oppertunity) and an extra 1 if it is your 2nd red card of the season, or you appeal and loose your case.

Well we’re still up there. All we have to do is equal or better Forest’s results. I don’t really care if we go up as champions, just that we go up.
Over on the dark side, the natives are getting very restless. I think some of them are getting used to the fact that they may be going down. Some of them are hoping that Birmingham will take it easy on them. They are second bottom now that Burnley and Hull both won.

Anyone else see a theme beginning here. Last two away games played on diabolically bad pitches. Are they being prepared to nullify our passing game? Great results in the circumstances. Well done RDM and the players.
Report abuse
TRBH you could be correct. I saw the highlights of the Blackpool game and thought the pitch looked bad, but then Plymouth’s pitch looked even worse on Saturday. I suspect it is partly because other teams know it stops us playing our pass and move football and brings it down to their level.
Another great win though under difficult circumstances. I didn’t think JT’s tackle deserved a straight red at all. In any event, now he’s missing for four games it gives Slory his chance if we can get him match fit. I’d start him on Tuesday night against Scunthorpe and then again on Saturday against Reading in the cup so that he should be firing on all cylinders by the time we play Cardiff away.
Finally, I’d just like to give a special mention to Super Kev. You can’t teach that.
Top drawer son.

TRBH, NYBaggie
I play Sunday football with a Plymouth fan. I asked him about the state of the pitch, he tells me they had a home game abandoned after 60/70 minutes about a month ago (I think they were 4-1 up at the time, might have been Blackpool), and that it should never have been played. The pitch has been horrendous since.
It’d be nice to think teams would go to such lengths to put us off our stride, but in reality I think we’re maybe flattering ourselves to think a team would savage their own pitch just for our visit.
Great to see us roll our sleeves up and grind out these wins though. 3 wins on the bounce, Forest seems a long time ago!!
Report abuse
Warren.
Not talking about savaging, a good soaking would have this effect, Derby used to do it in the seventies. Apparently Chelsea did the same thing yesterday before the Arsenal game. Don’t underestimate our reputation in this league, or the lengths some people will go to to win.
Report abuse
Bully
I remember John Beck’s teams used to employ these sort of tricks, and I’d certainly expect no less from Tony Pulis or Neil Warnock teams. You probably remember more examples of this.
Perhaps I’m being naive accepting the weather and previous abandonments as reason for the deterioration of the pitch.
Either way, it’s good that we’re showing we can win these sort of games. We’re not just a one-trick pony like we have been in recent years and we’re up for a good scrap.
Difficult away games for Forest and Newcastle this week, hopefully this is where they’ll start to drop points.

A comment on the Notts Forest win. On my fancy DVD/Hard Drive recorder, I played the ‘penalty’ awarded to Forest. The ball hit the defender on the BACK where shoulder meets arm. NO penalty. Then to compound the insult, just look at where the ball was placed to shoot the penalty. Approximately a foot off the spot towards the goal. When you think how fussy the ref can be, this was unprofessional, sloppy and bordering on corrupt in my opinion.
Report abuse
I think most supporters when they look at the current Albion situation will agree that in the last few seasons JP has done a pretty good job in directing the club. One of the brightest young managers in the game and several top quality players have joined us leaving the team well placed to progress. In fact I can only think of one mistake JP has made and that was to let Kevin Phillips leave for the Blues. I have seen most great finishers that have played for the Albion , players like Ronnie Allen, Derek Kevan, Jeff Astle, Cyrille Regis and of course the legend Tony Brown who was probably the closest in player type to King Kev. I don’t know if others agree but I think Phillips was the best finisher I have seen at the Albion.
Report abuse
Robin.
Good call. Bomber will always be more of a hero to me, a great goalscorer with more of an all round game than KP. In the poacher stakes however Phillips reminds me of Jimmy Greaves and is definitely the best ‘clinical’ finisher in my time.
On the same subject, I found the analysis of KP’s movement around the penalty area on MOTD2 very interesting and revealing. Does he think about it or is it natural instinct? 80% the former and 20% the latter I’d think. This was done by Lee Dixon, what an excellent analyst of the game he is, unlike big head Lawrenson on MOTD who offers so little insight into the game.
Report abuse
If I remember correctly it was all down to the fact that Phillips wanted two years and we said one with the second year based on performance and appearances. Personally if I was Phillips I would have taken it as I knew I’d be getting the second year
Report abuse
M.B.
The second year was based on making nineteen appearances [i.e.five minutes as a substitute would have counted.]He would have been O.K. as he would have been on Premiership pay the next season where as at Birmingham for the same period he was on Championship pay.I thought he was offered a good deal.
~~~~BOING~~~~BOING~~~~JtH.
Robin, you must be getting on a bit too! I was lucky enough to see just one appearance of W.G.Richardson in 1944, chubby and way past his best, but there to encourage Barlow and Ball at inside forwards. He was my Dad’s legend of course and 4 goals in less than 5 minutes at West Ham in the 30s would take some beating. Dave Walsh was my next hero and he was a good finisher. From Linfield in Ireland, about 1946. Then in 1951 came Ronnie Allen. A goal first game against Wolves to earn a 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns. He was only 5ft-7ins tall but had the lot. TWO devastating feet and his diving headers were a sight to behold. His passing ability equalled Barlow’s and I cannot give higher praise than that. The ability to ‘back-spin’ a long pass so that it came back to the recipient to run on to is a lost art. I idolised all the others you mention too but it has to be Ronnie for me. Bomber was a finisher too and today would command £15million. He is also a fine man, modest and time to speak to all the fans. A legend and one club man almost to the end.
Report abuse
So Kevin Philips leaving the Baggies did have an upside in the end, then?
Dingle town mighty quiet this morning; a few rumblings, but little talk of “top ten finish”. Where would they be without Doyle?
We have signed Mark Nouble on loan from West Ham. Just about to print his kit.
He will take the pressure off Bednar and miller.
Just what we need i think!
If you need cheering up this cold monday, try reading post 78 on the wolves/blues page where you find laughing wolf accusing wolves fans of being Albion in disguise (I know I know….)
He then states that everything at wolves is fine, except they need a new left back (yeah thats the problem).
He then gets into a running argument with other wolves fans who for some reason don’t see it that way.
Best finishers in my time would be Bomber, Hughes, Bob Taylor, Phillips !!!
Report abuse
I forgot about Lee Hughes in my list of goalscorers but you are right he should be in the list. On his day he was an exciting player and had the same ability as Super Kev to lose his marker. I see that he’s still scoring for Notts County and it’s a great shame that his career went off the rails. I still rate Philips above him and Super Bob because he has consistently scored at the highest level. It’s close between KP and Bomber however. The real Bully Hoo is right to point out that Bomber was a real Hawthorns hero but spent nearly all of his career at the Hawthorns and we only had Kev at the tail end of his career. He was good then but even better before we got him. As a finisher KP for me rates the best I have seen. I would imagine that both KP and Bomber put hours of work into their positioning in the box but a lot of it is natural instinct which you can’t teach.
Report abuse
Robin – I agree that KP is probably the most clinical finisher – but Hughes and superbob did it for longer at the shrine – and its easy to forget just how fantastic hughes was for us when we won promotion – the best “partnership” (with Roberts) I’ve seen there.
I don’t think anyone can touch Bomber Brown – so many goals for one club and probably the best striker of a ball in my time (imo only paul scholes comes close).
If KP had played as many games as hughes or taylor I would probably move him up my ratings.
And we haven’t even mentioned Cyrille….
Happy.
Just been to have a look and you’re right. I love she wolf’s ‘day release from the funny farm’ jibe.
Wolves Mod that he attacks writes about three replies on every one of their threads so if he is an Albion fan he obviously follows the Wolves boards as assiduously as LW follows ours.
If you haven’t already seen it, there’s another LW extravaganza later on the same thread. An Albion fan (could even be you or Sir Terry) goes fishing with a mighty big worm and lands Shadrag, hook, line and sinker. Best bit of pantomime I’ve seen in ages. I really would pay good money to read LW’s posts. Brilliant.
PS. Surely finishing with your head is just as much of an art form, so what about The King?
Report abuse
Apologies, but I couldn’t help but add to that thread by reminding laughingwolf about butterfield and ended up asking if they remembered to remove the tesco bags from their seats.
PPS.
Further to my last. Part of Shadrag’s diatribe finds several ways to prove that ‘Sandwell Town’ are a two bit excuse for a club. I can only assume that he missed the article that reveals Wolves bid £1.5 mill for Moses and Cline, whereas little Sandwell Town bid £2 mill for Moses alone. We can only look up at our ‘near’ neighbours with awe and envy.
Just read the Nouble story on the official site. He sounds an ideal replacement for Miller – 6’3″ powerhouse and only 18.
I see West Ham got him from Chelsea so maybe RDM saw him as a youngster.
Sounds an exciting player – but I imagine he will be an impact player from the bench.
Report abuse
Great result Saturday – Only saw the highlights of the game on Beeb so cannot see what wound JT up so much before his sending off. What happened? Does anyone who was there know? Missing him for 4 games is tragic. I know we have Slory and now Nouble to cover for him but it would be great if we could stop losing him like this! I am looking forward to the Scunny game tomorrow – 4 wins on the bounce would be awesome.
Report abuse
He was almost actually cut in half by a Damian Johnson (former blues thug) ‘tackle’ when he was about to seal the 3 points for us.
Johnson should have been sent off for that challenge, but JT was wrong to react as he did, although it is clear to see why he did it.
Let’s hope Slory is fot enough to replace him tomorrow night.
