Palace defeat is ‘perfect motivation’

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy insists the derby at Birmingham is the “perfect motivation” to bounce back from the “worst performance” of his Molineux reign.

McCarthy faced criticism after Wolves crashed out of the FA Cup at Crystal Palace in midweek, and now takes his team to St Andrew’s tomorrow.

And the Molineux chief admitted he had never presided over anything as bad in his time in the job.

“It’s the worst we’ve played in the three-and-a-half years I’ve been here,” said the boss.

“The only good thing to come out of the game is we can’t play worse and we have to play better.

“It’s the perfect motivation for a local derby and we’ve played well in the Premier League.

“We’ve had a good response in training though, but the response I’m requiring is tomorrow.

“We’ve put in some really good performances and I’d envisage another good one tomorrow.

“If we play like we did against Liverpool and Hull then we can win or not be beaten.

“We’re desperate for a three pointer. The important thing is to stay in games and not go 1-0 down and chasing it.

“Against Palace, there were question marks levelled at the team about their desire, guts and application – three days before we fought back at Hull and showed what the team is about and I’m sure we’ll do it again tomorrow.

“It’s a pressurised game but more so for us than them.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy insisted Wolves’ interest in re-signing Robbie Keane was genuine.

“There was firm interest, but he went to Celtic because that’s where he wanted to go and good luck to him,” he said.

“We actually showed a lot of ambition in the transfer window but it just got batted back.

“I know we’ve got criticised for it, but it really wasn’t for the lack of trying.

“This might sound harsh – players wouldn’t come, whether it be because of better money, a better club or the clubs wouldn’t sell them and there’s really nothing we can do about it.”
