The road is long for the Baggies
Friday 5th February 2010, 9:10AM GMT.
Albion blogger Jarrod Hill surveys the scene at the Hawthorns post-Blackpool ahead of a long trip to Plymouth – assisted by the one and only Sir Terry Baggie.
I couldn’t make the game on Wednesday night but Sir Terry Baggie acted as my eyes and ears, so I am sure you will all be glad to know he has helped me write this blog.
But, before we get to what turned out to be a fantastic three points at Blackpool, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest arrival, Giles Barnes.
After bursting on the scene at Derby as a fresh faced 17-year-old, the midfielder was touted as having a huge future in the game, but after enduring an unlucky run of injuries has hardly played for the past two seasons.
His story kind of echoes the situation Jerome Thomas was in when he joined us and, if Giles can have the same impact ‘JT’ has had, then this could be one of the shrewdest pieces of business we have ever done.
I know it is hard to believe but he is still only 21 and, with time on his side and a medical rehabilitation team that is second to none working with him, I look forward to seeing him in a Baggies shirt soon.
Wednesday night turned out to be a bit of a nail biter at Bloomfield Road and, for those of you who have a nervous disposition, I am afraid the games are coming too quickly for you to have a break.
Listening at home I thought our manager had made a blunder in replacing Roman Bednar with Ishmael Miller, but all ended happily after we rode our luck towards the end.
Anyway here is what Sir Terry had to say.
“You don’t need to go to the Pleasure Beach to get your thrills at Blackpool. It was a coach journey of almost four hours, in conditions that can only be described as hazardous, rain, sleet, snow and bitter cold winds.
“We had a text at 5pm to say that the game was definitely on, much to the disappointment of the 52 fans on board the coach, knowing what the away end is like at Bloomfield Road.
“Anyway, arrive we did. We were too late for a dip in the Irish Sea, so we decided to sample the local ale, and very nice it was to. We were discussing in the pub on whether the players would be up for the game on such a nasty evening and rain sodden pitch.
“As we made our way to the ground the weather conditions improved, the sweeping wind and rain had stopped much to our delight. Our fears about how the conditions would affect the team were soon eased as Albion took control of the game with sublime passing movements.
“The ever-improving Bednar running the Seasiders defence ragged along with the outstanding Youssouf Mulumbu, a tower of strength gets better with every game. It was a bit of a shock when we fell behind, although we were soon back on level terms and then in front.
“The result was never in doubt, as I told my trusted sidekick ‘Worcester Baggie’ when he rang me at half time while is was in the portaloo relieving myself of the Devils Brew. The game changed when Bednar was replaced by Miller, as we failed to hold the ball up.
“Young Andwele Slory almost had a dream debut, almost scoring with his first kick of the game, the lad has got plenty of pace, and I am sure that he will be a great asset to us.
“Once again, Blackpool took advantage of us allowing them too much time and space to level the score. As at Ipswich a week earlier, we kept on going forward and got our reward as Miller was brought down in the box, and Graham Dorrans stepped up to put the game to bed.
“Blackpool pressed forward and there were a few scary moments but we held on, much to the relief of the 1,500 travelling faithful supporters. So, back to the coaches we went, listening to the snide remarks of the homel fans calling us dirty Brummie gits, which we are neither of course.
“Another long haul to Plymouth on Saturday awaits us, and another 3 points will do nicely. Hope this blog isn’t too long, only I opened a six-pack while I was writing it, and you cannot shut me up when I have had a drink.
“Aye, boing boing!”
I am sure you will all join me in thanking Sir Terry for his thoughts and I hope you have laughed as much as I did when reading it.
Onto tomorrow’s game, Plymouth are struggling at the wrong end of the table and will be looking at their home games as a means of getting themselves out of trouble. But if we are to achieve automatic promotion this season these are the type of games we must win.
The squad is looking strong and confidence must be high, so now is the time to put a good run together and keep the pressure on both Newcastle, who play tonight against Cardiff, and Nottingham Forest who will be looking to bounce back from their defeat against local rivals Derby.
The journey to Plymouth is a long one and with ‘Poker Star’ Pete Danckert wanting to play cards on the way down, I may have my begging bowl out next week!
I just hope it is a happy road trip home with three points safely tucked away.
Thanks again go to Sir Terry, we reckon we could become the new Ant and Dec! Come on you Baggies from me, and aye aye hic boing boing from him.

Cheers both! Top bloggin’!
Big game tonight before we cross the bridge of getting a result at Plymouth – what would you all prefer: Newcastle or Cardiff to win, or the draw?
Personally an away win would do me as I think the carrot of going top would be enough to drag us through another tough-looking match.
Just booked my ticket for the Cardiff away game a week on Tuesday – they’re normally quite exciting so if you’re coming I hope to catch up with you.

Thanks, tomorrows game is never as easy as it looks on paper and they will have a number of new signings on show. But realistically these are the games we need to win.

Fantastic, not only is Sir Terr a george Clooney double but he’s a wasted talent at bloggin !!!! Time to move over mate lol. as i said to you yesterday, great result at blackpool, reminded me of two seasons ago when we battled back with Hoffkens, super kev ans big ish all rippin them apart in the last 1o minutes of the game. Id love a cardiff win tonight because we havent yet seen how Newcstle will react to pressure in this league, ill also have one eye on Forest as the reality of promotion starts to dawn on their squad. It will be interesting to see if the green army use any of their new signings, but quietly im confident. 3-1 to the baggies

Good work both.
From what I gather, it was cold, we deserved the win, and Sir Tez drinks too much!! :-)
We’re staying over on Saturday night in Plymouth, and I’m confident that we’ll have 3 points to celebrate with to be honest. We’re playing well at the minute and although a few of the players will no doubt be feeling the strain of playing so many games in such a short period of time, RDM’s trying to recycle the players he needs to within these fixtures (i.e taking Bednar, Brunt and JT off early on Wednesday night).
It seems as though Chris Brunt has found a bit of form again over the last week or so, so I hope that continues.
COME ON ME BABBIES!!!!!!!
RDM’s intimated changes, but I can’t see too many.
Cech took a knock so it may be we see Mattock. Jara’s had a long run of games, so perhaps we might see Zuiverloon.
Mulumbu and Koren have only just come into the side, so should be ok. Brunt, JT and Bednar only played 60-odd minutes Wednesday so will presumably start.
That leaves the 2 centre-backs, who I expect will play as defenders cover less ground than midfielders and strikers (unless Tamas is still short of match fitness and Meite will play).
Finally, the man that probably needs a rest the most, but who can’t afford to rest. Dorrans has to play.
If we can get on top, we can win the game in the first hour. If not, could be tight. 3-1 Albion, Come on you Baggies!!

Nice blogg lads. My prediction is we’ll be top by next Saturday with Forest close behind and Newcastle falling away. Its been a good Jan with Slory looking promising, Tamas looking a very good addition, Ish back in,and the prospect Giles Barnes. Most of all I’d like to see Morrison back. His work rate and skill level would fit perfectly anywhere across our midfield.

CARSON,ZUIVERLOON,MEITE,OLSSON,JARA,

Youve picked Brunt twice mate, and going on his form last month i wouldnt have picked him once!!
But to be honest his form has picked up in the last two games lets hope it continues.

Not at all happy about taking effective players off towards the end of the game unless they are injured.
When players like Roman and JT are taken off, it gives the opposition renewed hope and encouragement. At Newcastle and Blackpool, it nearly cost us a point/s.
I also hope RDM does not underestimate Plymouth and make wholesale changes a la Mad Mick earlier in the week!!
Plymouth are fighting to keep their place in the CCC and there is nothing players hate more than being looked on as an easy three points!
Absolutely proud to be an Albion supporter.
There have been times over the last 25 years when it has been truly abysmal and I hated my friend who took me to see my first professional game at The Hawthorns in 1962 and of course i was hooked.
I would like to record my grateful thanks to the last three chairmen who have worked hard and against great odds and criticism to bring West Bromwich Albion to the point we are at today.
Tony Hale. Mr.Thompson (christian name?) and of course Jeremy Peace.
May we all ‘Live long and prosper’.
Paul?
And are you Jeremy Peace?
If I were in the exalted position of our chairman, I would speculate to accumulate a little more but despite my frustration with him at times, he together with the other two, have removed the ‘laughing stock’ tag from our club and given us a rock solid foundation for the future.
i just hope that our own Randy Lerner is on the horizon somewhere.
At present, despite the frustration, I would rather be working as we are, than be in the position Portsmouth are in.
My main hope for the immediate future, is that when we get promoted, we this time invest in some carefully chosen, tried and tested Premiership players, to give us a real chance of success.
I realise that this requires a Quantum Leap in the thinking of Jeremy and the board so i won’t hold my breath!
Jeff,
I’m glad Jeremy Peace is not a gambling man.He is the reason we are
a rock solid club.Yes we would like
a new owner who could plough more money into our club, but I would like
to still see Jeremy there in some
capacity. We could ill afford to lose
such a brilliant business brain and
rock steady influence. Because him
being a true” BAGGY “he would make
sure our new owner had our football club at heart.I know it’s frustrating at times, but we are doing O.K.aren’t we?.

I think you’ll find that if we do get our own Randy Lerner, you’ll still get some asking for our own Abramovich or Mansour. I’ve heard Vile fans on local radio accusing Lerner of not spending enough. It’s the modern day football fan.

A la Spartacus. I’m Jeremy Peace. Come Warren, New York et al where are you?

Good blog lads, enjoyed reading that. Well done to everyone who traveled to Blackpool on Wednesday night too. Fantastic effort. It was a great result on a dodgy looking pitch.
I agree with Warren, RDM had one eye on tomorrow’s game when he took JT and Bednar off after an hour or so. Jara will be fine now he’s playing right back. When i looked at the bench on Wednesday night we had 4 forwards (Cox, Moore, Slory, Miller), 2 defenders (Loon and Meite) and a keeper. We don’t have much cover for the middle 3 unless you bring Loon on and move Jara into the middle. That’s my only concern.
Otherwise, keep up the good work boys.
7. DorransLovesBrom. Are you a dingle? Why would RDM suddenly switch from his very successful 4-5-1 formation and why do you have Brunt in your starting 11 twice. Go back to the early bird pages.

Anyone who understands football knows you
cant keep picking the same players over and
over again aspecially in this this league
where you almost have to play twice a week.
If Albion were playing a top of the league
league team then I`d say keep to 4-5-1 but we
aint so this is the perfect time for Di Matteo
to rest some players.
CARSON,ZUIVERLOON,MEITE,OLSSON,MATTOCK,
BRUNT,MULUMBU,DORRANS,THOMAS,BEDNAR,MOORE.
I`d give Jara,Tamas,Cech, and Koren some time
out.

DLB make your mind up. Jara or not, Mattock or not Thomas or not?
DLB, I’m grateful that the only team you get to pick is your play station starting XI because I’ve never known anyone change their mind as much as you or talk as much nonsense.
Btw – McCleish picked the same team for 15 consecutive games when Blouse went on their undefeated run.

If you knew anything about football you’d know that Tamas is a midget.

‘Tay fair, Sir Terry having all that talent. Who is this George Clooney bloke anyway? Is he another Clark Gable, James Stewart, cowboy type? You can’t expect me to know, I ain’t been to the pictures since Shirley Temple and Gracie Fields were famous. Well, nearly. I listened to Beacon and Tom Ross and Bomber Brown found it and made it exciting. We are all, rightly, dead chuffed with Dorrans, Jara, Tamas and of course, the ‘Bloody Viking’ Jonas, but in some ways, the return to form of Bednar is the promotion clincher. You can’t make 4-5-1 work without his play. We have no one else who can do quite what he does. Add to that his toughness to go it alone and take the thumps, he becomes as important as Dorrans. And THAT is saying something.

Cyril,
I have to admit, I love reading your posts as there’s the right mix of humour, common sense and the footballing knowledge that has obviously been groomed over many years of watching the beautiful game.
I reckon Sir Terry’s got a battle on his hands to keep his top blogger title.
Who do we like best, Cyril or Sir Terry?
There’s only one way to find out………….

I saw the goals on Sky Sports News and I thought that both Blackpool goals looked scrappy. What I mean is I thought we should have stopped both of them. But I wasn’t there and I know that highlights don’t always show the true picture.
We’ve still got eighteen games and we need to equal or better Forest. I am not bothered about going top, I just want us to hold onto second at the very least.
Just been on the dark side and added a couple of posts in the Nathan Lloyd blog, not nasty ones, but ones that may make them think.

Ned, I once had the honour of meeting the Knight Tez himself. There’s no way I could hope to compete. He treats his female followers with a magnetic indifference that is fascinating to see, whereas my technique was the eye-to-eye gentle chat up line. Worked well 150 years ago but not now. Now if you want to see a bulldozer at work with the girls, Jarrod is yer man! I think E&S could be on a real winner matching these pair for the blog. That mixture of humour and football observation is high class and heady stuff.

PS: If we do get promoted again, are we having an aces-to-faces meeting at the Vine as last time? I’ll try hard to stay alive for that one.

Great result, we do look better in a 4-5-1. Robson knew but didn’t have the players!!
Great blog also but can we please stop playing up to this brummie/black country divide.
All it does is grow greater manc’s stature over the west mids. If they stand united they will gain 2nd city.
I am a brummie from great barr. I love the baggies like hundreds of other great barr lads. I went to school in wednesbury, so it pisses me off when anything is made if brummie/bc etc.
Also don’t forget JP is a brummie, all that matters is we r baggies

Robson didn’t have the players because he brought in a load of old blokes for reasons of his own. Great to see our old players now are Thomas, Olsson, Bednar etc, who would have all been youngsters in Robson’s team.
On the other thing. I’m from Smethwick, right on the border, as a kid Villa were the big rivals as Wolverhampton was miles away. It don’t matter where you’re from and as I’ve said before, give me somebody from the BC that supports the Wolves over a ‘Black Country Red’ any day. Even typing the phrase makes me feel sick.

Iam not into silly little computer games and
Birmingham only have to play once a week which
makes it a bit easier.
It makes me laugh that Tom Ross thinks the
transfer window is a watse of time but Iam
sure if Blues had spent 20M then it would be the best thing since sliced bread.
