Slory’s double target in Albion move
Tuesday 2nd February 2010, 10:30AM GMT.
Albion new-boy Andwele Slory has targeted a recall to the Holland team after setting his sights on helping the Baggies to the Premier League.
Slory is available to make his debut for Roberto Di Matteo’s side at Blackpool tomorrow, after completing his free transfer move from Feyenoord.
The 27-year-old, who won two caps for his country in 2007, believes strong performances for Albion could catch the attention of national team boss Bert van Marwijk.
He said: “That is an important thing. First you have to do well for your club, then the coach will come and watch. He was my coach in my first year at Feyenoord so he knows me and he knows what I can do.
“But I have to deserve so first I have to do well for the club I’m playing for and then we can talk.”
Slory has signed for Albion for five months, with the option to extend his stay for another year.
The winger has revealed how head coach Roberto Di Matteo has already compared his style to a current England international.
He said: “The manager says I’m like Shaun Wright-Phillips. He is a quality player, so I’m not saying ‘I am Shaun Wright-Phillips’ but I am that type of player.”
Slory also told of encouragement from new Albion team-mates Gianni Zuiverloon and Jonas Olsson, along with former Holland internationals Giovanni Van Bronckhorst and Denny Landzaat, to try his luck in England.
The wide man said: “I have known Gianni for five or six years and it’s good that he can show me around. I played against Jonas Olsson in Holland. He is a good guy and a good defender.
“He was important and Giovanni Van Bronckhorst and Denny Landzaat were also important. “They all said ‘if you get the chance to go to England you should go, you’ll never go back to Holland.’
“I’m very delighted to be here. It took a while and the negotiation was tough. But I’m happy and proud to be here.
“Now I just want to get on the pitch and show the fans what I am really about.”
