Loan star Burns is Rangers dynamo

Stafford Rangers loan star Michael Burns has been hailed as the midfield dynamo that can be the driving force in the middle of the park for the team.

The 21-year-old has impressed alongside playmaker Tom Thorley in the centre after joining on a month’s loan from League One Carlisle United, first starting a 1-0 win over Harrogate and then keeping his place for Saturday’s narrow 2-1 defeat to Southport in back-to-back home games.

Burns is expected to keep his place for Saturday’s trip to Stalybridge Celtic, despite veteran Tony Dinning nearing full fitness to a return from a back injury.

The Liverpool-based player also brings a great pedigree with him, after coming through the ranks at his hometown club to be a part of the Reds’ FA Youth Cup winning side of 2006 and 2007 before manager Sammy Lee took him to Bolton.

But a subsequent move to Carlisle in January 2009 has seen only one first-team appearance against Walsall and, with six months left on his deal at Brunton Park, the former England schoolboy is looking to get as much first-team football under his belt as possible to improve his future prospects.

His time at Marston Road is due to come to an end after the trip to Farsley Celtic on February 23, but assistant manager Darren Read is hoping the club can keep hold of the player for longer.

The Rangers No 2 said: “That is something we will address with Carlisle when the time comes, because we don’t know what they have planned for him. But we are very pleased with him so far, he’s similar to Jake in that he covers a lot of ground but what ‘Burnsy’ brings is that bit of Football League experience.

“When a 50-50 ball comes in, he can make it a 60-40 in his favour because he has that bit of determination and something about him. His non-stop work rate is terrific. He is a real find for us really.

“The lad has a lot of power and that can only be good for the team.”
