Agbonlahor backed for goal glut
Tuesday 2nd February 2010, 10:30AM GMT.
Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has been backed to go on a Premier League scoring spree after ending his drought.
The England star netted both goals in Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Fulham – the first a bullet header followed by a wonderful curled effort just four minutes later – for his first strikes in the league since scoring the winner at Old Trafford in the 1-0 victory over Manchester United on December 12.
It ended a six-game barren spell in the league for Agbonlahor – but now the 23-year-old has rediscovered his goalscoring touch, team-mate James Collins expects him to go on a red-hot run.
With a crunch top-four showdown at Tottenham next up on Saturday, a scoring sequence could not come at a better time for the claret and blues.
Collins said: “Gabby will probably go on a little run now and score a hat-trick. They were two great goals. The first one he showed his strength with the header. I don’t think he left the floor and he still nodded it in.
“The second one was a great bit of skill and he showed his quality by bending it in the far corner. He’s brilliant. He was holding the ball up well on Saturday and linking up well with Emile Heskey up front.
“You forget how young he is really. He’s still a young lad and he’s doing fantastic for us.”
Collins revealed both himself and defensive partner Richard Dunne are used to getting the runaround by the jet-heeled forward in training.
He added: “In training, he’s lively. He’s one of the quickest around, so obviously he keeps me and ‘Dunney’ on our toes.
“It’s good practice for us. We’re both quite big fellas and personally I find it tricky on the floor sometimes against the quick lads.”
