McCarthy at war with the mercenaries
Saturday 30th January 2010, 11:36AM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has taken a swipe at the time-wasting mercenaries as the hours tick down to the shutdown of the transfer window.
McCarthy hopes to see his pursuit of Hull winger Stephen Hunt pay off by Monday’s 5pm deadline and would like one of several bids to be accepted for a striker.
But he revealed his frustration at the guarantees some targets want before considering a move to Wolves.
“There seems to be a stock list of 20 questions – ‘What happens if they stay up or down?, ‘Is there any money if we stay up?’, ‘Will I have to cut my wages if we go down?’” fumed the Wolves boss.
“There are others saying ‘What happens if we go down?’, ‘Can I have a buy-out clause?’, ‘If we stay up, can I have another buy-out clause?’, and ‘Can I get a bonus if we stay up?’
“It doesn’t seem they think: ‘Wolves – they’re a brilliant, fabulous, Premier League side, I want to go there.’
“It’s not a case of ‘I’d love to come, it looks a great opportunity’.
“’A lot of them want the ha’penny and the bun. It’s a pain.
“Players are looking at all the teams in the bottom half of the league and are be thinking ‘Am I going to be playing in the Championship or the Premier League?’
“I guess if they feel like that, we might be better off without them anyway.
“All the lads here are motivated to remain in this league.
“I want people who are going to scrap to keep us in this league and help us get better, not be worried about the negatives.”
McCarthy wants signings who showed the no-fuss attitude of on-loan Chelsea man Michael Mancienne.
“Michael Mancienne said ‘right, where shall I sign?’” he added.
“I said ‘Aare you on your own – no parents, no agent?’
“I said I’d take him to where he was staying, but he said ‘no’ he’d put it in his satnav.
“It was manna from heaven. No-one was looking for a loan fee, it was just fabulous.”
McCarthy said he would be happy with his squad even if he makes no more signings.
“I’m alright with the squad. We’re in good shape,” he said.

McCarthy said he would be happy with his squad even if he makes no more signings.
“I’m alright with the squad. We’re in good shape,” he said.
Living in cloud cuckoo land is this man,Defence that concede 2 or more in just under 50% of games played,Forward line that has forgotten how to score,Yet he says he is happy.
If the ordinary man in the street was performing at work as he is and then came out with a statement like this he would probably get a rocket up his proverbial back side.
Hull is a massive game for us today and defeat in my opinion would MMs position less tenable.

this is an insight into the trouble the 3 m’s are up against; big money grabbing egos! It shows you can’t just buy the players you want as there are so many factors, unlike what some fans think & moan about. Utw

Fair play Mick!!
I want to see players that want to wear old gold & black, none of these badge kissers one week, transfer requester the next week!! We’ve had our fair share of mercenaries in the past!
Anyway 3pts today please!!
Up the Wolves

Well said. I totally agree. Since when did buyin experienced mercinearies do any good. Wolves have had more than there fair share of old time ego busters in there time. I for one will be delighted with this current squad. Espcially if they all want to play for the club.

Mick – how naive can you be???
If your attitude is: “I will only sign players who are prepared to come without asking decent questions such as those above” then who will come to us??
Unproven foreign players, and rubbish such as Halford.
You have to “sell” the club, and its ambitions to those players, and part of that is telling him, what is in store if we get relegated, or how we are going to build on, if we stay.

Bang on CW Agreed
Report abuse
CW i totally agree with you. It is clear that Mcarthy’s poor planning and purchases are inferior for this league. He has wasted a lot of cash on the likes of Halford, Surman, Elokobi etc. SEb is a waste of space in this league. Saying that he is alright with this squad is unbeleivable to say the least. I think it shows that he has a lack of experience at this level and he is banking on them if/when we are relegated to the fizzy pop. The deadlines is fast approaching and all we have is two loans from some bloody team in Belgium! Bad planning = poor performance! If prospective players ask those kind of questions it is because of what football today has made them. They are not all like it but that is what football has become today…….premaddonas on stupid money BUT that is the managers job to manage them for the good of the club!
WOLVES FOR EVER!

Super Mick. Whatever he says, I’m down with that.
MOney in the bank, players who love the club and a manager with Mick’s character.

Well said Nick.
I wish more so called Wolves fans on this site would get behind the team in this way.
All these fans that think they could do a better job than the three M’s just wind me up.
Up the Wolves, Wolves till I die, C’mon you Wolves – that’s all that needs to be said.
Just enjoy the ride. We’ve got to fight for our right to be in this league. Promotion from the CC doesn’t give us the right to be beating teams in the bottom half automatically over night – (unlike like some on this site seem to think).
So how about for once we all get behind our team, and see out the second half of this season with some true support. Think yourselves as Wolves supporters – you should be ashamed of yourselves.
Good luck today lads.
In Mick we trust.

Welcome to the Premier League Mick and the parasites agents that infest it.

In good shape?
Are you havin a laff?
Right back as winger, square pegs in round holes!!!
Play players in correct positions and buy a centre half, left back, midfielder, right winger and striker
Report abuse
well mr mcCarthy you need to remember its all about the money you will struggle to sign anyone if thats your attitude. and if your happy with the currant squad you should worry for your job because sir we are not scoring any goals. we need a winger and 2 strikers before monday make it happen i trust in you.
Come on McCarthy you and I both know Its always been like that.In principle I agree with your views on this, but,as a so-called experienced manager it should not be a surprise. You are just making excuses because you have no intention of signing experienced players but you want to do things on the cheap as usual.Get off your butt and get after Beattie for one and give the club and its fans some hope.Mr.Morgan why not go for Avram Grant who could show this Muppet what a proper Manager can do?
Avram Grant, who is performing wonders at Portsmouth? Just what we need. Beattie, who has scored twice all season? Hmmm. (Are you sure you thought about this?)
Why is MM making such a big deal of this or is it a case of no new signings come the end of the transfer window.
I’m sure that every football club goes through the same thing when it comes to transfer dealings as there is no loyalty but only the love of money with most football players.
Just get on with it and bring in some quality players to keep us in the premier league!
MM is right to say that he’s happy with the squad. Even if he’s desperate for reinforcements, it is good management to let your squad think you rate them. Fingers crossed for a couple in before Monday night though!
Csidewolf and Nick…Well said, I’m with you all the way.
I agree with Mick. these players are just out for what they can get. They already get paid shed loads. Cause you take a pay cut if you go down. I would rather make do with what weve got and take our chances. You have got to run the club to a budget. I can’t stand journey men players, no loyalty. Look at the respect Bully earns and rightly so. I hope MM sticks to his principles even if it means we battle on with our current squad. Massive this afternoon. Come on boys!
Number 1- do you not think MM makes these public statements to motivate his team? Where would we be if he joined in with all the whingers? Doh!
Motivate his team? today’s team consists of 10 who were championship players last season CB at RB The player of the season Foley in midfield again a 5 man midfield and a lone striker against a team who have not won for 8 matches.
Not a case of whinging just would like to see Wolves compete.

players who love the club? what if every business only emplyed people who loved the company and product? this is nonsense? The fact is we all go to work for the best price we can get. So we are now wanting to sign wolves fans? So we have Robert Plant and the lead singer of Reef up front.
Dan I agree.ALL THE MORE REASON TO SIGN ONE OF OUR OWN. PULL
ALL THE STOPS OUT TO GET ROBBIE ANY WAY WE CAN!!!!!!!
I reckon Robert Plant is a better header of the ball than the Hoff,so you never know.I wouldn’t fancy Noddy Holder on the wing though.
A good point today, maybe Mick has still got that nun praying for us,following that trip to Spain last season. All this talk of difficulties from Mick is just PR stuff to soften the blow after 5pm on Monday.I fear a Frankowski moment coming on.
I want nothing more than a win today, nothing else will do, because if we can’t beat Hull, after our draw with Liverpool and our win against Spurs, you must fall on your sword, and make way for someone who can save this great team
You are full of excuses, do something radical today, give Hoff a little more than 5 minutes, no one knows what he can do, give big Chris more time and Volkes…we must score first, give us half a chance, we can’t rely on Doyle every week
Whatever happens today, win, or take a walk
Report abuse
Mick, it may not be right and its totally alien to us working blokes but thats the modern mentality of footballers.
You need to accept this and evolve because we all know what happened to the dinasuars!!!
And please can we just play 2 fullbacks instead of the 4 you keep playing. Its no wonder our strikers don’t score. Theres no creativity.
Foley won player of the year last season… have you forgot what position he played in????
Does MM live in the real world??? Players who are any good are bound to ask what happens if we get relegated or stay up???
When Steve Gerrard asks his manager if Liverpool are investing in quality players does that make him a neg head???
Players with talent and abillity know full well that they can command x y or z in salaries, add ons and bonuses – It doesnt mean that they are not worth signing
Imv its called ‘man management’ something I have suspected for a long time that MM and Moxey are short on
All better Prem Proven Players want to ply their trade in the highest league – its called ‘supply and demand’
And before anyone spouts off about the fact that I have used Steve Gerrard as an example – I already know that we have no chance of signing him nor do I expect Ronaldo etc anyday soon

you pay peanuts you get monkeys
we must be paying our manager peanuts
Report abuse
This is just the kind of tripe we are used to hearing from our idiot manager.
Yes, what an idiot he is.
He came in when most of the first team squad had been moved out. We all feared relegation, and instead he achieved a place in the play-offs.
The idiot said he would get us to the Prem in three years, and then the plonker went and did just that. How stupid could one man get?
He wants to build for the future of this club, and knows what all idiots like him know. People that are committed to a cause give all for the cause whereas people in it for the money fold like their tenners when the going gets tough.
What an absolute idiot not to want players who would do that. Mick, HOW DARE YOU CARE ABOUT THIS CLUB OF OURS!! Please do a Portsmouth for us. Win us one cup and then we will be happy to go bust. Please bring back the Bhatti#s to help you. We love the way they nearly put us under in the eighties.
Breretonwolf, I agree with a lot what you say.Mick manages his own way and so far in the main so good. But don’t forget it was an accountant who via the administration process gave us the Bhattis rather than the Sir Jack backed group in the first place. So accountants like Moxey do get things wrong. And going for cheaper options in the transfer market originally led to our downfall. The gates didn’t fall from 25000 to 3000 in three years because the fans didn’t like the Bhattis aftershave. And in the first 12 months under the Bhattis we did get promotion. Then they failed to invest in the team.Sound familiar?PS I do remember you are an accountant.
i think McCarthy wants them to say im going to wolves because super mick is there. grow up McCarthy they are just looking after themselves. it only normal
Report abuse
You have to remember that to footballers football is their living, they want the best for themselves and not the club, same goes you everyoone of us that work we go to work for the cash stuff the firm we work for if another firm comes along and offers us more money etc we leave to join them same as footballers.
Number 4 on here CW sums it up nicely, Wolves have been very niave this season in more ways than one
