Showdown key to Hunt chase

Stephen Hunt
Stephen Hunt

Wolves’ vital survival clash with Hull City tomorrow has also now become a deciding moment in the battle for Stephen Hunt’s signature.

Hunt is believed to favour a move to Wolves, and a victory for Mick McCarthy’s men at the KC Stadium could be the tipping point in debt-ridden Hull’s resolve to keep their star asset.

Hull say they countered Wolves’ £4m approach to sign the Irish international by starting talks on a new deal to stop him leaving.

But Wolves believe Hull boss Phil Brown’s words carry little weight and merely form part of the poker game being played out in the saga.

Instead tomorrow’s game offers the opportunity to make a vital statement as to which club offers the better future option.

Hunt will face Wolves then knowing he could be playing for McCarthy’s side by Tuesday in a fascinating backdrop to the clash.

Publicly at least, Brown is determined to be seen to do all he can.

“I spoke to Stephen this morning and began preliminary talks with regards to a new contract,” he said yesterday. “That’s how keen we are on keeping Stephen.

“Stephen is a big part of our plans and we want him with us when we kick on. There’s been firm interest from Wolves.

“People say the bids will test us but I’m hoping Stephen will test Wolves the right way, playing for Hull.”

“Jez Moxey said he’s not going to bid £10m for a player worth £2-£3m.

“However, he’s bid £4m, so I don’t know where he’s standing.”

The fourth offer is the culmination of a month’s careful bargaining by chief executive Moxey and represents double their record outlay for a winger – the £2m paid to Manchester City for Mark Kennedy in 2001.

McCarthy is convinced Hunt won’t allow the speculation to affect his performance tomorrow.

“I can’t say I know him that well but from watching him play, I don’t think he’ll be bothered,” said the Wolves boss.

“He had all that stuff with Petr Cech and went back and played and he scored at Chelsea for Hull.”

Having signed Geoffrey Mujangi Bia, Wolves believe they have a Plan B if they miss out on Hunt.

Surely it’s time for Wolves to start spending some of the money available on an investment like Victor Moses. It seems that Crystal Palace are considering bids in the region of £1.5 million & at todays prices, that looks like a “pocket money” deal. The player is only 19 & should be worth a gamble at that price. Also, I think that Hull are determined to keep Hunt & why would he take a gamble on moving from one relegation threatened club to another?

Agree, at £1.5m VM is good business but we need a player who can make an immediate impact ala Beattie at Stoke.

We’ve offered £4m, to me it’s worth upping this by a £1m to get him. We get £30m for staying in the prem. Financially this must make sense.

If we go down it could take years to get back up, not an appealing thought.

If wolves want to stay up they have to fork out the money to sign these players instead of doing what we have always done and wasting money on complete flops such as maierhofer, halford and surman. To be honest the list goes on and were not going to stay in the premiership without spending. Its about time wolves break the bank and sign some quality players and put us on the map and make our status as a football club be heard instead of being considered a championship team with championship players!

As a Wolves supporter I must say that I feel very sorry for Hull City who have considerable financial problems, facing relegation, and must sell some of their players to pay their debts and survive the season. To make matters worse, Wolves, who they are playing on Saturday, who are also in danger of relegation, do not have financial worries, and can proberly offer Hunt a more secure future, and allow him to play along side Kevin Doyle and Keogh, all three Republic of Ireland Internationals
While loyalty is very important, Hunt must protect himself financially for the future, with the possibilities of becomong a victim of Administration like Crystal Palace, where at Wolves, even if they were to be relegated, are not in financial straights.

I think that he will be advised to make the move on Monday before the close of the window, and chose Wolves for his future.

I would hope that Wolves do not enter the battle for Victor Moses as I believe that while he has great potential, is far too young for what Wolves are attempting to create.

It is my opinion that Wolves would be far better served approaching the Palace Administrators to buy their striker Ambrose, and if they are refused put plan ‘B’ into play and approach Tottenham for a certain striker on loan for the Season, a player with experience, and known to Kevin Doyle, Keogh, Hunt…if we get him, also from the Republic of Ireland.

With those four in Wolves colours I could predict that Wolves would be safe in the Premiership, and continue to move forward.

I think Hunt will come. Having heard their Chairman talk of their debt its too good a deal. The gamble they have is that if they go down, Hunt will only go for 2-3 million, plus he’s on good money from now until the summer. He’s just the kind of player we need. I know nothing of moses, but if he’s as good as Warnock thinks he is, why have no Premier League clubs come in for him. One player we’ve not been linked with but who I would love in Pedro Mendes late of Spurs not at Rangers. We could get him for 2 million and he’s on 25 grand a week. We could manage that. I’d also try and get Reo-Coker on loan. Still, it ain’t my money!

I fully agree with number 3 and the comments made, Wolves financial stability has to be a serious consideration for Hunt and his future, and like number 3, believe Wolves will sign him on Monday.

But, lets not forget, we are desperate for a striker and number 3′s suggestion, which I assume he means Robbie Keane, would be a fantastic player for Wolves, even on loan.

I think that this may well have been considered by Wolves, and would love to see him in Wolves colours

I believe something big will happen on Monday before the window close, lets hope its Keane and Hunt, and I agree also, not Moses of Palace.

RE Billy Wright Bob – I assume you have had your head down a toilet for the last few days? It’s the only possible explanation for your comment about us being unwilling to spend big.. as Jez Moxey pointed out in the programme notes for the Liverpool game, finance is not the issue, it’s convincing experienced PL players to move clubs in January that is causing us problems. Moxey also stated that one deal they were working on would have potentially seen us break our own transfer record – now seeing as we paid £6.5m for Kevin Doyle last summer, it does not take a genius or mathemetician to work out that we are happy to spend big money this month.

I think that Steve Morgan is willing to put his money where his mouth is, so let’s hope that this weekend brings about some successful negotiations for the transfer of new players to this club… I sincerely believe that signing Stephen Hunt could provide us with the shot in the arm that we need, just like Stoke signing James Beattie and Matty Etherington this time last year. In a few days’ time we will know a lot more about where we are likely to end up come May.

    • scottwolf1

Don’t be so naiive Greg. Moxey can quite comfortably say that he was going to spend £10m or whatever on a player – doesn’t mean to say that when it came to actually getting in that situation he would do it!

All of the criticism aimed at him surrounds his lack of desire to spend big money on big players so the best way to deflect that criticism is to say “well we nearly broke club records!” PROVE IT?!?!

He could say he nearly signed Michael Owen or Wayne Rooney or Christiano Ronaldo! Sounds good but deep down we all know it ain’t true!

This is a fascinating story and some of the comments from the less educated fans(or West Brom fans in disguise)on here are ironic to say the least. Hull are in this situation because they got to the Premier League and spent beyond their means – perhaps because they took the same approach as the morons who post endless drivel on here like “spend more” “no ambition”. So unless we want to be in the same ship as Hull this time next year, I think Moxey will continue to buy astutely, rather than recklessly, to secure our long term future.
