Olsson tips squad strength to shine

Albion defender Jonas Olsson has tipped squad strength to pay dividends as the club continue their mid-season Championship marathon.

The Baggies’ hectic fixture list continues at the Hawthorns on Saturday against in-form Sheffield United.

With another seven matches to come before the end of February, Olsson believes Albion’s strength in depth will come to the fore.

He said: “I think we are building some momentum. If you look at our bench on Tuesday at Ipswich, Ishmael Miller, Simon Cox and Filipe Teixeira all came on as impact players.

“The gaffer has a lot of options and that’s something that will be in our favour coming into the second-half of the season.

“On Tuesday we looked fresh and we played the ball around. We are playing well so, after getting just one point, we are delighted there is a game so quickly so we can try and get a win.”

Tuesday’s dramatic 1-1 draw at Ipswich maintained the Baggies’ impressive performance levels, since their dismal showing in the 3-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

But Olsson has warned they must now get results to match their displays.

He said: “The reaction, we are very happy with, but the results could have been better. I think we deserved better. We have played two league games since that, Newcastle and Ipswich away, and we have taken two points from them.

“That’s not what I think we have deserved in the end. But we need to keep doing this and we know the points will come.”

Tuesday’s draw also extended the Baggies’ unbeaten away record to eight Championship games, since their defeat at Barnsley in September.

Olsson is now keen for Albion’s home results to match their solid record on the road.

He said: “I think that’s the only game we lost away apart from the cup game at Arsenal. We have been solid away and hopefully, with our performance at home in the FA Cup, we can get a run going at home, where we have been struggling a bit.”
