Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Bully Bites Back with Steve Bull
Thursday 28th January 2010, 9:15AM GMT.
Wolves legend Steve Bull gives it to you straight in his weekly column as the rise of Kevin Doyle and the fall of Sylvan Ebanks-Blake continues at Molineux.
It might not have been gained against one of their all-time great sides, but Wolves taking a point from Liverpool at home is never a bad result.
Maybe I’m biased but I thought we created enough half-chances in the second-half to have nicked Tuesday’s match. After a nervy start, I thought we improved as the match progressed.
It was a game of two halves, with the Reds bossing the first period – although without ever arguably creating a clear goal-scoring chance – and Wolves coming on ever stronger in the second.
Liverpool’s present side is not one of their classic line-ups and our manager Mick McCarthy seemed to acknowledge that at half-time, with a neat tactical switch.
Having started out with a 4-5-1 formation, with Kevin Doyle playing impressively up front on his own, we ended up almost playing a 4-3-3 with our wide players bombing forward.
Putting it another way, it was almost as if Mick set up his team to claim a point – but then realised Liverpool were not as good as he first thought. His post-match quote on Doyle was quite revealing.
McCarthy said: “I can’t imagine there has been a better centre-forward display at Molineux.” It’s rare for Mick to single out one of his players for special public praise and I think that he might have done it to raise the boy’s confidence even further.
I see Saturday’s match at Hull being a tight one and a single goal – maybe from our number 29 – might prove enough to win it.
While Doyle was fantastic on Tuesday, I’d like to think some of my home performances for Wolves were in that vein too. As well as Doyle played, he did not quite manage to cap his performance with a goal. But maybe Mick was so delighted with his all-round display that he wanted to put a spring in Kevin’s step for Saturday.
A draw wouldn’t be a bad result on Saturday – it would keep Hull in the bottom three – but I really think Mick will push on for the win. Taking three points from the Tigers would be a massive result for us.
Given all the gossip about him possibly moving to Molineux, Stephen Hunt’s performance is obviously going to occupy a lot of people’s attentions on Saturday. As I have stateed in this column before, I think he’s a great little player and could do a good job for Wolves. From what I hear, that deal isn’t dead yet so he’ll be especially motivated to put in a good shift on Saturday.
If we do revert back to a 4-4-2 at the KC Stadium, I do wonder whether or not Sylvan Ebanks-Blake’s name might appear on that teamsheet. Perhaps only a former professional and a centre forward will be able to tell you what a massive difference scoring even a single goal can make to a man’s self-confidence.
So, if I were his manager, I’d be tempted to play him in any fixture where he can experience again seeing and hearing the ball ripple into the back of the net. Even if that’s away from the first-team, for the moment.
Speaking of strikers, it was interesting to see Wolves linked with James Beattie last week, although disappointing he hasn’t made the move to Molineux. I just don’t understand how sitting on the bench at Stoke is a better option than leading the line for us.
BULLY’S BETS FOR THE WEEK: -
I seem to be able to predict every other match apart from Wolves, even down to the 2-2 between Notts County and Wigan last week in the FA Cup!
Saturday’s is a crucial one to try and get right, so I hope I’m correct in forecasting a tight 1-0 win to Wolves, which is 13/2 at Sportingbet.com.

I wonder if Steve had a little smile too himself when the quote from Mick saying he doubted there has ever been a better centre forwards performance at Molinuex!!! I can tell you that there has been from Steve himself on a number of occasions… (although Doyle is CLASS)
As for what Bully says about the formation played, I’d stick with 4-5-1. It CAN be a very attacking formation also, but having FOLEY at right wing, really does not cut it… I think we could be in for a few big performances from Jarvis over the coming weeks of this is the formation played, not only as we are in talks to sign another winger, but he also he a little more freedom to get forward… If only we had a right winger to do the same!!! I hear Tony Daley is almost ready to come out of retirement!!!
