Young’s looking for another scalp

Ashley Young has warned boyhood club Arsenal that Villa’s big-four slayers are out to complete their ‘Grand Slam’ tonight.
Martin O’Neill’s men have already defeated Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool this season but, after losing 3-0 to the Gunners in their first meeting of the campaign at the Emirates Stadium last month, their hopes of clinching the set rest entirely on this evening’s Villa Park clash.
While their form in the cups has been excellent, the claret and blues have failed to win in the Premier League since losing to Arsene Wenger’s side on December 27 – falling to a last-gasp defeat at home to Liverpool before being held to a goalless draw by struggling West Ham.
It has been a significant setback to their Champions League hopes after they slipped from fourth to seventh in the table.
Young, an Arsenal supporter as a child, is well aware they need to quickly turn things around but has pointed to their Carling Cup semi-final success over Blackburn and weekend win over Brighton – which saw them score a combined total of 10 goals – has left them brimming with confidence again.
“We lost against Arsenal and we lost against Liverpool so we needed to bounce back and I think we’ve done that in the best way possible,” he said.
“We’re full of confidence and we always go into a game thinking we can win it and tonight’s going to be no different.
“All the way around the team we have got goals in us. From the back to the front I think after the League Cup game there were only two players in the team that hadn’t scored (Brad Guzan and Stiliyan Petrov).
“We’re delighted that we’ve got goals coming from everywhere and we always think that when we attack we can score.
“Everybody wants to beat the top four but we’re a team that wants to beat everybody in the league.”
Young freely admits there is no better footballing team in the Premier League than the Gunners – but sees similarities between the way Villa’s versatile midfield sets up compared to their opponents.
“If you look at any team in the league you always talk about Arsenal being the best footballing team,” he added.
“Obviously we know it’s going to be a tough test, we have to get our tactics right but worry about the way we play – not them.
“They interchange the way we do. They have been doing really well – they are on form and we are on form so it should be a good game.”
Young has called for one final push from supporters as Villa embark on their fourth home game inside just 10 days.
He added: “It’s great for the supporters that they are seeing us do so well and reaching a final. Last week was one of those great games that I think everyone wished it would have been the final the way it went.
“If we keep putting on displays like that then the fans will keep turning up and being loud. They are always the 12th man for us.”
Villa are certain to be without Stephen Warnock, Nigel Reo-Coker and John Carew for the clash and O’Neill admits his team lack the depth at Wenger’s disposal.
“I wouldn’t say that we have the same strength in depth as Arsenal or the same quality the way down that they would have,” he said.
“But we have got a group of players here that want to play, are improving and have put the club in the position that they are in.”
A short cameo from Gunners skipper Cesc Fabregas proved the difference between the sides last month.
Fabregas had only been a substitute because of a hamstring problem but, with the scores level, was called upon just before the hour.
He went on to break the deadlock with a superb free-kick after 65 minutes before doubling the advantage on 81 – only to aggravate his injury in the process and have to hobble off again.
“Was the scoreline harsh? It doesn’t really matter,” said O’Neill. “The free-kick was the most important issue of the day. It was a great goal by them and it turned the game.
“I think anybody who witnessed the game would have said that wasn’t a reflection of the match but it’s happened.
“We are capable of winning if we don’t pick up any more serious injuries. Having said that, Arsenal are a very fine side and have got themselves back into championship contention. I’m pretty sure they would feel capable of winning the league.
“They lost (Robin) Van Persie to injury and I must admit I thought he would be a major loss but they are scoring goals for fun and are a very fine attacking team.
“What they have done hasn’t surprised me, it’s just the way that they have utilised their players so well.”
O’Neill insists nothing should be read into the Gunners’ shock FA Cup defeat to Stoke on Sunday due to their understrength side and is hoping for a night to match last season’s Boxing Day classic at Villa Park, which saw Zat Knight strike at the death to snatch a point.
“I assume they’ll be back to their full side,” he added. “They might have rested one or two players like (Andrey) Arshavin but they’ll be back playing against us.
“If it’s anything like the game we played against them here on Boxing Day when we should have been four up and found ourselves 2-0 down only to fight back to draw 2-2, it will be a cracker.”
Arsenal will have full-back Bacary Sagna available again following a shoulder problem and defenders Thomas Vermaelen, William Gallas and Gael Clichy will also return.
Midfielder Abou Diaby (calf) remains sidelined, while Nicklas Bendtner (groin) and Samir Nasri (hamstring) are back in training but will not yet feature.
