Olsson’s fury over penalty
Wednesday 27th January 2010, 12:44PM GMT.
Albion defender Jonas Olsson today hit out at referee Stuart Attwell over the controversial penalty that cost the Baggies at Ipswich.
The Swede was penalised in the second half for an alleged push on Town’s Damien Delaney but the decision left Albion fuming.
Roberto Di Matteo’s men rescued a point with a stoppage-time equaliser from Chris Brunt but Olsson was still seething after the match.
“I don’t know why it was given,” said Albion’s vice-captain. “I was maybe grabbing him a little bit by the shirt but that’s something that happens all the time in games.
“I think it was very easily given and I should have had a penalty 10 minutes before that when I was one metre from the ball in the box and got really dragged down from behind.
“But he didn’t give that one. I was asking him what happened but he didn’t want to speak to me.”
The award against Olsson left the Baggies playing catch-up and they looked set to suffer only their second away defeat of the Championship season until Brunt snatched his 93rd-minute goal.
And Olsson was quick to pay tribute to the character of his team mates.
“It’s a point and it’s a good equaliser by Brunty in the end,” said the centre-back.
“I think we played well. They had a few chances and Scott Carson played a really good game but I think we were decent and we had our share of chances as well.
“We kept our patience and showed good morale to come back at get one point at least.
“We didn’t just kick the ball and hope for the best.
“We kept sticking to our gameplan and making the pitch wide and credit to the team for coming back.”
Olsson played the game in a bandage after suffering a head wound against Newcastle on Saturday.
And he insisted the gash will not affect him.
He said: “The doctor made a good job of stitching it up after the game against Newcastle.
“I thought it was going to open up when I headed the ball but I had a bandage and it looked fine, there is no problem.
“It’s a contact sport and with the penalty you have to allow that kind of contact, otherwise you are being too picky.”
