Doyle: We were good value for a point
Wednesday 27th January 2010, 8:36AM GMT.
Wolves man of the match Kevin Doyle insists his side were worthy of at least a point against Liverpool after the 0-0 draw.
“We deserved the point if not more although we’d have settled for it beforehand,” he said.
“It was a difficult game for us and no one would have fancied us.
“Liverpool have played well over the last month or so – we watched videos of their last two games and they were certainly very good against Tottenham – so to get a draw out of them is a good result for us.
“I’m glad they had Steven Gerrard back so there were no excuses!
“But it wasn’t just a backs-to-the-wall job either where we were clearing things off the line – we deserved what we got.
“In the end, they resorted to long ball stuff so it was nice to think we forced them to do that.”
Doyle was superb as a lone frontman as Wolves suffocated the midfield by playing 4-5-1 for the first time at home.
“It was fine,” he said. “I’ve done it before. It’s different, but a lot of teams play like that now so you have to get used to doing it, especially against teams like Liverpool.
“It was the first time we’ve played one up front at home, but we got a point, it worked reasonably well and it was the right thing to do
“It’s different to having two up there, but you just try to keep going, nick headers and try to bring other lads into play as much as you can.”
Doyle believes Wolves may have found a way of stifling the bigger clubs as they picked up their first point in four games against ‘top four’ opposition this season.
“When we’ve played the top four or five teams in the past, we’ve played well for half an hour and maybe should have got something and haven’t,” he said.
“This time we set out differently and it was something we’d been working on for the last few days.
“The idea was to stop them playing and give us a platform to go from and it worked as they were resorting to long balls in the end.
“Hopefully when we play the bigger teams again, we might do something similar.
“We packed the midfield and we had plenty of lads nicking second balls with fresh legs in the middle to win everything.
“When one of their players beat one of ours, someone else was covering him.
“That was brilliant to see. This isn’t the easiest place to come on a Tuesday night when the pitch isn’t at its best.
“That made it difficult for them I suppose because they couldn’t pass it as much as they wanted and the crowd were well behind us.”
Captain Karl Henry hailed Doyle’s performance and said he was worth “every penny” of the £6.5m the club paid for him.
“He was fantastic – it was quite possibly his best game,” said the skipper.
“He had two or three chances and he was everywhere. He’s worth every penny.
“Playing up front on his own is such a difficult, thankless task and they were tough defenders, but he battled really well.
“He won more than his fair share, he created chances, he held the ball up well, he was coming back and tackling – he was brilliant.
“Even if he could only hold the ball for five seconds, that’s still doing a great job because it’s keeping the ball for us.”
Henry added: “It was a great result and a great team performance.
“We knew that they were there for the taking and we thought we played well and battled well against a top class side, so it was a good point.
“It was the plan to get into them, although I thought they battled well in the first half and they won their fair share if not more of the second balls and the tackles.
“But I thought we really put it to them in the second half and we looked a good side at times.”
Henry also praised the gameplan, with Michael Mancienne sitting in front of the back four snuffing out Steven Gerrard, which allowed the Wolves skipper to get forward more.
“Mancienne did a great job, and that gave me and Nenad the license to push on to support Doyle,” he said.
“I’ve got the legs to do it, so it was nice to be up there but it would be even nicer to add a goal or even a shot on target!
“I enjoy getting forwards although I didn’t feel I was at my best last night.”
